This 1920's art-deco inspired rustic cabin is rich with history and it's been in the Eastman family for almost a century! The views from the cabin and property are stunning and it's nestled in a very private neighbourhood on quaint little Bowen Island (only a short 20 minute ferry ride from downtown Vancouver, and a 10 minute drive north to the property). The cabin faces north but we were still able to enjoy some morning sun, with the best part being the mid-afternoon sun to the awesome sunsets. Wow! Our two dogs just loved this waterfront gem - it was a perfect spot for them to laze around and swim in the ocean. We rented the cabin through Bowen Island Accommodations (contact: Jan). She was very helpful, thorough and corresponded with us promptly. The cabin was clean and all of the instructions communicated were clear. Note: * sleeps 4 * the bed in the master is only a double * cozy, 500 sq ft rustic cabin (they have another much larger property for rental next door) * the waterfront (north) side of the property slopes down on a rocky stretch (caution for young children) * nominal pet fee * restaurants in Snug Harbour are only a 10-minute drive This was such a memorable get-away for us, I'm so glad I did my research. After running a company for 20 years in business we decided to sell our business and in doing so wanted to treat all our staff to a weekend get away on Bowen Islanx, while supporting Bowen business. We found the Eastman Water retreat on Bowen and thought it was expensive but ideal for our thank you gift to our staff. We booked a weekend with them and paid the absorb $3000 deposit just to secure the spot. On the night that our 6 guests arrived, Bowen got hit with one of the worse snow storms ever and most of the island was without power. We had planned a nice cooked diner at our house for our guests (husband, wife + 2 small babies), but unfortunately due to having no electricity we decided to move our diner to the Eastman retreat that we had paid for that happens to have power. It was myself and my spouse with 2 adults and 2 babies ages 1 and 2 that joined the innitial 6 people we had booked the resort for. We cooked a great meal together for everyone, shoveled the snow together and then left them to enjoy the retreat as me, myself and our 2 adult friends with thier 2 small children headed back to our cold house without power. After the weekend wrapped we all signed the guest book expressing our appreciation for the space. The next day we received a nasty phone call from Jan Stevens who repremended us and accused us of lying to her and told us that on top of our $ 1,700 bill for 2 days she has charged our credit card for an extra $600 for having 13 people sleep in the house! First of all we live on Bowen and would NEVER cheat anyone let alone a fellow Bowener! We pleaded with her that her accusation was rediculous as her house only sleeps 6 people which we booked for. She insisted that we were lying to her and that she would be keeping the additional 600 she charged us. It was a horrible feeling being called a liar and than having her explain to us how what we did does not sit well with Bowen people. Well the interesting thing is WE live on Bowen Island and are very much "Bowen people" and Jan Stevens who runs the Eastman Waterfront retreat as well as the Lazy Bowen Hideaway DOES NOT EVEN LIVE ON BOWEN ISLAND!! So in our quest to support our neighbors we ended up paying a rediculous sum to someone who lives in Palm Springs or Nevada not sure, but definitely NOT Bowen Island. She is not doing anything for OUR community! She is taking money off of the island. Also her rediculous cancelation policy which says if you can't get to your booked destination here due to ferry, weather or anything else. ...you lose your deposit ($3000) and are to blame for not arriving. Also if you have any day guests arrive just to say hello...you pay $50 a person for the visit and they cannot stay for diner or you pay more. The dumbest policy EVER and I wish we read it before we threw our money away to someone who does not even live on island. So if you're trying to support Bowen business, please do not rent from her! She is not very fruendly and was ok with leaving a family with 2 small babies out in the cold during the worse snow storm in history! Thanks for ruining a great end to a great company! Blown away. Excellent value…read more This spot is lovely, and easily one the nicest B&B's I have ever enjoyed. The exposure is West-southwest, capturing the heat and the sunsets. There's A/C for comfortable nights during the summer, and fireplaces for ambience and warmth during the winter. Marsha's breakfast is delicious, and she was very accommodating to mentioned food restrictions. (Next time can we order two breakfasts?) There are also BBQ's and lots of area for dinner on the terraces. The other guests there at the same time as us were celebrating their first anniversary. None of us wanted to leave. To say that the suites are well-appointed falls far short. They have everything you need, and are cozy, comfortable and quiet. The hot tub is clean and has a spectacular view of the straight. Follow the gorgeous, long new staircase down to the water and you're surprised by private little spots with adirondack chairs. You can be 15 feet from other guests enjoying the beach and still feel like it's your own secret garden spot. There is a little spa cabin by the water as well, and although we didn't partake of the services, it was tempting. I could just imagine the ocean breezes lulling a person to sleep under the skilled hands of the local massage therapist. If you like to watch the boat traffic come and go, this is a great spot. If you're a gardener, you'll appreciate all of the planning and work that has gone into the property. If you like the beach, low tide opens up a white sand mini-spit just off the shore. And if you're crazy and brought work to do (like I did), there are tables in each suite, wifi and lots of peace and quiet.

It's very evident all the thought and care that has went into creating this beautiful atmosphere and resort. We spent nights in both the Sea to Sky Loft, as well as the Sunset Suite. Despite our suite change likely not being the most convenient for the owner Marsha, she never made us feel a bother. Both suites are incredible, it would be really hard to choose which one we preferred. The views from the Sea to Sky are breathtaking, but the space and steam shower of the Sunset are equally enjoyable. Both had propane fire pits outside, and we enjoyed cozying up in the provided robes while looking at the stars. The space was clean, and beds were very cozy. This place is a hidden gem! Marsha was so kind and hospitable, and went above and beyond to make our stay the best as can be. The breakfasts she provided were all SO good! It wasn't your average Bnb, as each morning we got to taste something new that we had never tried before. We will definitely be back! We highly recommend this Bnb. Thanks Marsha!

Other than the pre-reservation communications, they were hands off--which was fine for us. We also were able to leave our bags on-site after check out, since our flight out was later in the day. The room was nice and cozy. Not fancy like a newly renovated hotel, but cozy for a B&B and felt like a house in a neighborhood, rather than a 30-story hotel. So that was nice. Breakfast was great each morning. I recognized Yumiko's accent as Japanese, so we talked in Japanese (her, fluent, me, poorly). Warm pound cake/muffin, fruits, coffee, and warm bagel with eggs/smoked salmon. Was a great way to start each morning. Barclay House is a few blocks from Robson Street, so it was easy to walk to and explore. Also close to Stanley Park, so a good central location for us. The next time we go to Vancouver, we'll look to stay at Barclay House.

Before I start grab a complimentary port or scotch or sherry. Then let's take a tour. Ok. It will be short tour. They just have a few rooms. But first well stop at the little side kitchen where you can help yourself to coffee, tea, soda and water. For a charge they also have wine and beer available. This is also where you hang your key when you leave the house so they know who is here. We got the Under the Apple Tree Room which was spacious and nicely decorated. It even had its own private yard. Also has gas fireplace, jacuzzi style tub and stand up shower. The heated bathroom floor was a nice touch. If you get tired of your room you can also enjoy sitting outside on a deck or the living room. We really enjoyed relaxing on the couch back in our room in front of the fire place. Morning came a bit too soon. Was hard to get up out of the super comfortable down blankets on the King bed. The breakfast was ready though and included three delicious courses. Polenta with almonds, banana kirsch, and smoked salmon with poached egg on toasted croissant. Yum. Virginia's breakfast was all the better by Brian's entertaining stories of 5 years in the service business now.

Our room was big and comfy with a remote control fireplace that adds real heat into the room and a large old school bathtub. Big enough for two.... Breakfast was delicious! Three courses, one of the fanciest I've had and the daytime butler service around breakfast time was a real treat. Fantastic time! I highly recommend the Thistledown house.

The waffles are to die for and the owners are very accommodating to your travel needs. We've arrived late at night and left very early and had no problems. I would recommend spending the extra money to book one of the front rooms as they both have sliding doors which open onto the porch where you can sit and eat your breakfast. It's literally right across the street from the ocean and very close to the pier and some shops.

The hosts, Will and Sylvie were extremely friendly and accomodating, knowledgeable about the area, and very hospitable. It seems that they are by nature open and receptive people, as we immediately felt welcomed. The location is a 3 min walk from the ocean. The Inn design and decor inspires calmness with it's clean lines surrounded by 5 story tall cedar trees. The Inn is built from cedar and that wonderful smell envelops you when you arrive; the windows are also framed in cedar- a very west coast look, the decor is Japanese Zen - including opaque 'rice paper-like' sliding doors between the kitchenette, the bedroom and the bathroom/spa rooms. I say bathroom/spa because it is like your own spa - but they do have an actual spa in the Inn with lots of great services-unfortunately we didn't make time to use them! The bathroom has double sinks, a steam bath shower- that's right, your own steam room in your bathroom!- and a tub for two or more with jet bubbles. The view from the bathtub, and the bed for that matter, is trees- just trees... you feel like you are in a tree house! There is a private patio for each room, ours had a glass roof, UV heater, bamboo water feature with pond plants, a love seat, chair and bistro table where we ate breakfast every morning. The breakfasts were filling and gourmet. The little touches such as a split basil leaf as a strawberry leaf on the berry garnish, allude to how much the hosts care about your experience. My gluten sensitivity was catered to without a hitch, nor did I feel like I was missing out because of it. We spend 3 nights there, could have spent a week. Although we were there in the summer- and the weather was perfect, I'd have no problem going there in the middle of winter as a retreat. I could have easily stayed in our room the whole three days- and that isn't just because I was on my honeymoon! ;-)

We stayed in room #3 that has AC, This one is an en-suite bedroom. Room 3 seems to be the smallest one compare to all others. We did peek into room #1 and it was larger. Pros: #1: close proximity to English Bay and #1 rated Stanley Park. Within walking distance to many restaurants. Stanley Park has Brewery that is within 5 minute walking distance from the Inn. #2: free parking spaces (3) in the back if space is available. must request ahead of time. #3: very romantic, cozy setting with lots of furnishings to go with name like English Bay Inn. Had port wine with several glasses to use. #4: Yes, the breakfast and the friendly staff serving you in the morning. The staff is very personable and paid attention to details. Cons: #3 being the smallest, we did not have enough room to open the suitcase fully but somehow managed it. If you are big, you will definitely hate this room. Overall, we will definitely stay again and recommend to others

We just checked out, and during this time of the year (May) there are beautiful flower blooms and weather to go with the charming house. My parents booked unit 6, the attic. My husband, son, my brother and I had unit 5, the basement. For Unit 6, you enter into a seating area, then go up another flight of stairs to another small seating area, the bed area and a pretty good sized bathroom. Our basement until (in photos) has a small kitchen, small dining room, and two sleeping areas. My brother was with us just one night so he took the back bedroom, and when he left our son took the bedroom. With either situation the basement was enough room for us. If you are visiting with a child, I'd recommend booking the basement to keep the rest of the house quiet for the other guests. The only downside for the basement unit is that you don't get the wonderful breakfast with it. My parents and my husband and I switched off going to breakfast on different mornings since the attic unit does include breakfast. They thoroughly enjoyed their omelet breakfast and declared that we'll enjoy our turn the next day - and we did enjoy it this morning! We had muffins, fruit salad, and delicious Eggs Benedict with corned beef, small salad, sprouts and grilled tomatoes. A gentleman sitting in front of me had the omelets the day before and asked for fruit and cereal instead today, and they happily supplied him with what he asked for. The house is obviously an older house. It's nothing like staying at a brand new five star hotel, but you can say that's all part of the charm of it. When I visit Vancouver again, I plan to book with them again as long as they have availability. The Inn is also very nicely located. You can walk a short block down to the bay and take a nice walk one way to Stanley Park (the entrance is one block north), or walk south to a popular beach and restaurant area. If you are driving, make sure to request a reserved parking space (there are only 3). I'm a fan, and if you enjoy character and supporting small quality businesses with caretakers who want to make your trip enjoyable, book with them!

The day time staff were really lovely and kind. They stored our bags for a late departure, left very good instructions for a late arrival, no complaints there. The decor is tired and old. We booked two rooms (we were in the Master Suite on the ground floor and the Penthouse, despite booking 8 months in advance and asking to be on the upper floor to be closer to our kids on the top floor), one with A/C, the other without. The one without (Master Suite) was fine the first night, sweltering the remaining two. A standing fan in the room was insufficient and cut out if you went above 2nd speed. Bathroom is one step above a hostel bathroom with a 1970s spigot, no working fan either and the beds were saggy. For what we paid, this hotel really could use some sprucing up. Perhaps the other rooms are better. The master suite was not great. The Penthouse was better. The evening staff person had a 1 1/2 hour personal phone call on speakerphone reverberating throughout the house. We couldn't enjoy the common area at all because of her loud, lengthy conversation. Not the sort of B&B experience we've come to expect. A quibble about the breakfast. You have to pre-order which is totally fine, but the one day when we really needed to leave early, the breakfast didn't come to us for 45 minutes after sitting. It threw off our visit to the suspension bridge, putting us on a bus an hour later than desired and we were stuck with huge crowds. We ended up not even having the breakfast at the hotel the next day as we didn't want to have a repeat...we far preferred our wonderful coffee and breakfast at 49 parallel roasters, which I recommend too. All in all, would we do it again? If you get a spruced up room, perhaps. If you are visiting outside of the hotter times of year, sure. But avoid the master suite and if you have plans that are on the early side, make sure to let them know that you are hoping for an on time breakfast.

I can't say enough about how amazing of a stay this was and would highly recommend it.
