Planning our first visit to Vancouver, I found a list of boutique hotels / B&Bs in the Fodor's online guide. The places that could accommodate our ten day leisure stay, during the end of August, offered small rooms with limited natural light. When I dialed O' Canada House, Flor spent twenty minutes on the telephone with me answering my inquiries; the rates were a bit higher than I initially anticipated, but that's the thing, when you receive a high level of engaging and thoughtful service, you are more willing to release your credit card - reservation booked! (Note, other places didn't include a full breakfast and full pantry access so rates were actually in-line with my initial budget.)
Stayed in the North Suite for the first half of the visit, which has a spacious dream bathroom reminiscent of a time of luxury & wealth, and then switched to the Penthouse for the second half. Rooms were true to the pictures and website details, and the Penthouse made us feel as if we possessed a temporary abode in downtown Vancouver, in the full living quarters of the top floor.
Breakfast is the highlight offering a full gourmet hot meal served with homey feel from Flor or Dvorak in the dining room decorated with touches from the gilded age, where you can find a private table or join the communal one. I met really interesting leisure and business travelers, and even joined a couple on a free city walking tour. When the couple departed they left me their unused "hop on - hop off city bus tour" tickets, which we would never have purchased, but we both loved experiencing the "wrap-up" of the city's spectacular views on our last day.
Danny is a superstar chef & innkeeper, and all of the staff offers information / services with ease. The kitchen is open to all guests, and you can have a soda, coffee, or a muffin at any hour. Sherry is available every evening in the living room.
Great not to carry a laptop; house computer is available with free internet use, and you can print your pre-boarding pass (just ask Danny or Flor).
Tours, excursions, sights, and general neighborhood recommendations including restaurant advice is generously supplied.
Location is stellar, right in the downtown, on a private street, with easy access to the action of the city and the solace of a visually serene and alluring neighborhood. We never took a taxi or train, and covered a light of ground on foot.
I'm a huge fan of O' Canada House! read more
