Everyone from the hospice agency to the hospital case manager congratulated us on finding this placement--so much better than the institutional options that were available to us. Ivan welcomed my mother and us with open arms, showing flexibility and compassion with visiting hours that were unmatched in any other establishment. The environment was so warm and welcoming and homey. In her condition my mother wasn't able to take advantage of all of the family style meals and entertainment the other residents shared, but the caring, compassionate, highly skilled staff made her as comfortable as possible, she ate better than she had in weeks, and she was at peace. Since my last review on For Senior's Sake, I filed a complaint with the Washington State Department…read moreof Social and Health Services. I was concerned that Laura Cirves had violated my mother's rights. It appears that a similar situation occurred with another resident of For Senior's Sake. I would encourage that person to call and register a complaint at 1-800-562-6078. This is the only way to call a halt to Laura's bullying tactics with her clients and the families of clients. After an investigation by the Aging and Disability Services, Laura was issued 4 citations. 1. Failed practice in the area of care planning. 2. Failure to provide proper notification of changes to services. 3. Failure to provide proper notification to change in fees. 4. Discharging a client without proper cause. Laura was also required to refund a larger amount than she had initially sent to us from the month's rent that we had paid in advance. Unless people follow through in reporting issues like this one with For Senior's Sake, our seniors will continue to get taken advantage of like Laura Cirves tried to do with our mother.

During my father's time at For Seniors' Sake before his passing, he was surrounded by loving care, smiles, infinite patience, and kindness. Our family dropped in frequently, and we always happened upon a conscientious, caring, and committed staff. Laura sets a cheerful tone for her house, with superbly clean, pleasant surroundings (fresh flowers, home-y decorations, etc.) . She even makes the meals herself, none of that industrial food. She's extremely conscientious about the complex state regulations, and keeps patient logs that we could track online. Laura patiently spoke with us at all hours in a compassionate, respectful manner--it felt as if we were collaborators in providing dad with the best care possible. In his final days, only Laura could bring a smile to his face, and that says everything. On a practical note, Laura was prompt and responsive when issuing a substantial refund check. The care dad received at For Seniors' Sake brought comfort to our family, knowing he was in such good hands. We feel fortunate to have had such a good experience during such a difficult time.

Excellent Retirement Apartment Facilities for my Family Members…read more SITREP Both my mother and my uncle John have spent time in these facilities. Mom is still here and I come visit her. My uncle John has since moved on to a nursing home, but when he was more independent-living and ambulatory, these facilities made a great home for him. THE SETUP They are Studio-apartments for single individuals or couples. They have an excellent physical plan that includes many living rooms and multi-purpose rooms for the residents. I am very impressed with the computer room with it's four (4) whirring PCs! In a facility with more than a couple of hundred individuals that doesn't sound like a lot of computers, but this generation I have found isn't naturally intuitive to this technology. However, I have dragged my mom into the 21st Century world of computers and smartphones, and in the end she really has appreciated it. So she is usually one of just a few people that use the computers at any given time. GUEST ROOMS But beyond being residential facilities, they also have guest rooms that I have taken advantage of because they are integrated into this facility campus. The guest room I stay in is extremely inexpensive, and on the same compound as mom's. At a mere $35 a night - you can't beat that in any hotel for what amounts to a really nice studio apartment. I sometimes may begin and end a trip using my Hilton Honors Points at a Homewood Suite, but it's nice to know that for the buck of my stay in Seattle, I can stay at my mom's facility for my home base as I work and visit friends. HOLIDAY DINNERS I love the holidays at Northaven because of the festive celebrations they have around Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas (usually the times I stay in mom's local digs). She likes to show me off to her co-residents as I come visit and hang with her posse. They are a bunch of fun older ladies - and one extremely funny Pakistani gentleman (a former diplomat now living in this country), and we make the most of some of the holiday events. The facility really goes all out on preparing special dinners and they are really quite delicious with all the trimmings. But I have to note that even the normal average dinners are quite elegant and enjoyable here. GARDENS There are some beautiful rose gardens on the grounds that the residents get to enjoy. All the gardening and trimming is quite exceptional and the ground are kept beautiful all year round.. THE LOWDOWN A very sweet and quaint facility to make home in one's sunset years.

The facility is not luxurious, but it is clean, functional and well maintained. What warrants the 5 star review is the staff ... the Director, the social worker, the receptionists, the aides, the wait staff and house cleaners. They are all so warm, caring and attentive. Nilda wants the best for her residents and is so thoughtful with activities and special celebrations. Birthday parties, painting parties and bringing in musicians are just a few of the wonderful things she does. She pays attention to each individual's wants and needs. She paints with my mom, buys connect-the-dot activity books for my dad. Yes, we love this place so much, I moved my dad in too! The home is extremely clean and inviting. Each of my parent's rooms have french doors out to the beautiful backyard. The grounds are impeccable. They've created a park-like environment with walking paths, a fountain and a beautiful covered/heated gazebo for residents and their families. To me, this is above and beyond what most other facilities would provide. They are constantly making improvements to the property, inside and out. I highly recommend this home. They give your family member a soft place to land when they need it most.

My Mom was diagnosed with mild vascular dementia several years ago. For years she was able to live…read morecompletely independently, but with time, her disease progressed to the point where we decided that she would do better in a supportive community. But where to move her? The choices seemed overwhelming. Over the years I've had experiences with a wide range of retirement communities, rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes, etc. involving family and friends, so I'd seen both the best and others I wouldn't wish on anyone.  This experience was really helpful, because when Mom could no longer live on her own, I already had an idea about what I wanted for her. We ultimately selected IDA CULVER HOUSE BROADVIEW for its reputation, range of services, location, gorgeous campus, and most importantly, its memory care unit. We couldn't be happier. Here's why I chose them. First, I spoke to a lot of professionals in the field, friends, and colleagues when the (somewhat frantic) search began and was surprised how many had parents or knew friends' parents who lived at ICHB and they all raved about it. That was a great first sign. Second, it's locally owned and operated and is not part of a national franchise, so it feels less corporate and more home-y than other facilities with a wonderful focus on the residents. At the same time, it's an expansive 8-acre campus with a range of living options and is beautifully manicured with gorgeous trees, flowers, paths, both indoor and outdoor seating areas, a beautiful second floor library with big picture windows, and a dining room with beautiful views of the water and mountains. Third, high staff turnover in this business is pretty common. So I was pleasantly surprised to learn how many staff members have been with ICHB for 10 or 20 years or longer. It's a testament to how the company treats its staff. Personally, it's important that the folks who are looking after my Mom like what they do, care about the residents, and that the relationships she builds will be lasting. This is especially important for those with memory problems. I've spent quite a bit of time interacting with staff over the past five or six months and continue to be impressed by how caring, helpful, and personally invested they all are. Fourth, ICHB is a great choice if you have a parent who wants to find a place to retire and age in place. Three options are available: 100% independent living in studios, one-bedroom or two-bedroom apartments; independent living with assisted living services added as needs increase; and memory care. The last thing I wanted for my Mom was to move her into a place only to have to move her elsewhere for memory care when the time came; I wanted more certainty and stability for her. ICHB was a great fit for this reason. When my Mom first moved in, she had a gorgeous, brightly lit studio apartment with a view of Puget Sound and the Olympics with trees right outside her window. Everything was new and clean. It was amazing! There were lots of planned activities, classes, social events, and options for staying busy, making friends, and pursuing hobbies (I receive regular courtesy emails with lists of planned and upcoming offerings). Given her needs at the time, we arranged for her to have assisted living services to provide her the extra help she needed. When her dementia progressed, the Nurse Director helped us transition her into ICHB's memory care unit, called the Terrace. The staff in the Terrace is experienced with Alzheimer's and dementia and know how to provide specialized support to the residents. Her days are filled with activities and she seems happier than ever. I recognize this has been a really long review (hopefully it won't be a tl;dr kind of thing) but I wanted to share this in the event it might be helpful to others who are where I was when our journey began. The thing that has made the most difference to me is the peace of mind I now have knowing that Mom is being well taken care of, is happy, and that if either she or I ever need anything, the staff at ICHB is there for us.

Our family has two members currently residing at Ida Culver House. One is totally independent and…read morethe other requires more support. Both are pretty happy with the environment. They both state that they really enjoy the meals and the dining facilities, also the opportunities to socialize with others in a variety of dining options. I am unable to address the costs with any accuracy so I will say I only understand that fees are 'hefty'. But that includes all expenses. The family members support each them with frequent visits and supplement anything they need. At times, the staff is not 100% on the ball and require that we keep check on doctor's orders. It is important to do this since health issues are involved.  There are a variety of activities offered and many residents take advantage of the offerings and state that the choices are outstanding. These activities offer so much, friendships, socialization, enjoyment and much more. The programs are high quality and open to all. So far, the individual apartments are pretty basic. The windows are large and open onto lovely landscaping. Moving in required that each family member had to leave much behind and only bring in a few treasured items to fit into the small apartments. For our family members it is important that we 'supplement' their lives with our support. We do so with love and affection.

The owners, Tigist and Yonas are two of the kindest and most loving and caring people I have ever met. They have welcomed me into their family with open arms and have made my move and transition to AFM living very easy. They have been providing exceptionally healthy and delicious food, based on what I like and have been doing all they can to assist with my settling in process. They have a lovely home in a very quiet neighborhood yet very close to shopping and transportation. I am very pleased with the quality of their care, assuring my daily needs are met and assisting me as needed with my love of baking and cooking in their well-appointed kitchen. They and their three daughters live in the lower level and it has been very nice getting to know them. I brought my Christmas nutcrackers and Christmas tree decorations with me and we have had fun decorating the upstairs together. I highly recommend Abigail Adult Family Home to anyone looking for a quality home environment for their senior family member or for themselves. I was nervous about moving to an AFH but now know I made the right decision moving here!

My siblings and I knew she needed help and once we moved her, we learned just how much care she really needed. The staff identified several issues and helped us know what needed to be done or find professionals who could assist. They take good care of Mom implementing the recommendations of the medical professionals. On Mom's 93rd birthday they recognized her with birthday cake and sang Happy Birthday. They also had a family birthday party/dinner on Mother's Day when the family could be there. From the very beginning, the Tigist and staff have asked what Mom likes for food, activities, and how she wants to be cared for. Even though Mom has dementia, they do their best to accommodate her wishes. Mom regularly asks to move back home, and then in the next breath says they take really good care of me here--they give me almost anything I want. My partner had to put his mother in care and says he's never seen the good quality care Mom is receiving. My siblings and I are so grateful for Abigail's Adult Family Home where they take such good care of Mom.
