The experience has not been positive…read more The major problem is that Aegis is a for profit enterprise run by an owner who wants to maximize his profits. This is done at the expense of senior residents and their families who feel trapped. When our aunt entered the facility her monthly invoice was about $8,000. Due to inflation and a "care point" system imposed by Aegis, her current invoice is now over $14,000 per month. Yes, there has been a gradual decline in my aunt's physical and mental abilities, but nothing so acute as to warrant a 75% increase in the cost of her care within three years. Rather, it feels like Aegis has devised a way to legally extort ever greater sums out of its vulnerable senior residents and their families. Within the fine print of the contract she signed there is a "care points" system which is supposed to relate to additional services that may be provided. Aegis has the UNILATERAL power to impose these services and charges on the resident. Just this past month, Aegis Greenwood said it installed a new software to calculate care points, and by virtue of this new system even more points were added DESPITE no additional services being provided. Additionally, the Aegis assessments are incredibly vague in describing which specific services are being provided to justify the additional points being charged. When one contacts Aegis for an explanation of the charges, they deflect giving an answer and instead request a face to face meeting, so that they can have the element of surprise and create intimidation by bringing in several employees. They refuse to put anything in writing. I feel that Aegis has entrapped and is financially abusing my aunt and likely many other vulnerable seniors for whom changes, like moving their residence, is a very difficult matter. One report filed with the State says, "He did not recall signing anything recently regarding an increase in care points. He was paying 10-11K per month when his mother moved into assisted living and now pays between $18-19K per month [three years later]." Sounds familiar. Even with all of this going on, it is unlikely I will move my aunt as she has settled into the place and moving her would be a true hardship on her at this stage of her life. I am managing her finances so only I have to deal with the disgusting behavior of Aegis management.

I found it very pleasant there. Also love the dining area overlooking the atrium. All spaces well designed, well kept, clean, and modern. The apartment rooms are also beautiful spaces with luxe carpets, modern kitchens, and baths, with good amount of storage. The food quality and service could be improved, but we ate at an odd time...2:30 pm on a Saturday. I can't say enough about the people running this... so many activities and the residents themselves are go-getter and so friendly. Beautiful facility ! We worked with the community relations Director and he was wonderful and helped us thru a very stressful process of convincing mom to leave her big house. He really knows how to talk to and relate to older persons, and he so committed and compassionate. He gave us incredible advice all along our journey to find a place for mom to live. He gave us incredible tips, referrals and information to help with the process. My mom chose this place out of all the ones we looked at, but due to timing issues and availability of units and some additional amenities she needed, we went with another wonderful Merrill Gardens property. Do not hesitate to make this your or your loved one's new home!

She's dealing with progressing memory issues & simply adjusting to being a widow & apartment life. She loves all the staff - from management, the medical director, front desk, dining room, concierge, facilities, & cleaning staff - they are all kind, friendly, fun & supportive - not only to her but to me also. It feels like home to me too. The staff immediately took the time to learn my mums (and my) name and get to know her so she felt welcomed, seen and supported. They go out of their way to accommodate her needs, they are immediately responsive. She has challenges that they have recently found an amazing work around for, which will give her extra support & more purpose in her day. Amazing! She's lived in 2 different apartments in the building & both feel new, clean, fresh, bright. Very comfortable. The location is fantastic - walk a block or so right into the heart of Ballard, grocery store across the street, banks & pharmacy a block away. It's perfect. As soon as I met Ian (community relations director) an Lisa (general manager) when we toured the facility, I knew we had found her next home. They are absolutely wonderful people! Zero pretense - just down to earth, fun & really good at what they do. Transitioning her into the facility was easy (mostly for me) with thanks to how simple the staff made it - a big move after living in your home 30 yrs! Thank you Merrill Gardens at Ballard - you are making this challenging time in my mothers (and my) life so much easier. I also will say that I have spoken to several other Merrill Gardens management & community relations staff at their other locations & have found every one of them to be incredibly helpful, also going out of their way to assist. We are truly appreciative - I have absolutely ZERO hesitations when recommending Merrill Gardens at Ballard.

Finding a suitable match for long-term care was challenging for our family. Luckily, we found Aegis Living on Market Street in Ballard as a residence and care facility. Aegis Living is not only top-notch in every aspect of senior care but also gives complete reassurance to our family that all of her needs and medications are being met with the utmost professionalism. The residence is very clean and the dining room offers excellent cuisine with daily specials. Everyday there are activities, exercise sessions, and programs designed to get my mom out of her room and involve herself with the other residents. Entertainers are regularly invited to perform on the grand piano in lobby and there'll even be a concert there in a few weeks for New Year's Eve. Although there are still times that my mom has the blues, our family can rest assured that she is has a group of new friends, gets three delicious hot meals a day, receives all her required medication in a timely manner, and most importantly, - she is safe and sound. As a family, we are very fortunate to have found Aegis Living in Ballard. Thank you to Paul and Michelle and the entire team there!

It's very difficult to make a change when one is in their 80s, but the staff and residents at Ida Culver Ravenna went above and beyond. Everything is five star in our book. At Ida Culver you will be surprised to find a warm, welcoming place behind the serious facade on NE 65th. The majority of the facility is older with big picture windows facing either a meditation garden or a beautiful, large sunny garden. This won't fill your needs if you're looking for brand new, McMansion type living. But if you are looking for wonderful spaces, bright and cheerful views, top notch staff with absolutely great communication, you have found the right place for your loved one(s). Soon after our Mom moved into Ida Culver, her health started to decline. The staff of Ida Culver was right on top of it, communicating to us what we didn't always see on our regular visits. Not only was the staff great, the other residents looked after Mom, and communicated to the staff when there was a problem. They were with us in dealing with hospitalization, were with us in dealing with the hospital regarding her care, and were with us for the short term of skilled nursing in order to gain strength. Our Mom will be transitioning to full assisted living, and the nursing staff has been wonderful concerning planning, communicating, and meeting with us. Bravo Ida Culver. It's wonderful to find a place that truly cares about their residents and 100% advocates for the best care possible. They have made this difficult journey that much easier.

In short Most skilled nursing facilities are severely…read moreunderstaffed. That's not unique to this place. Same with the aging building itself. But the problems here go well beyond that, and I'd feel guilty not warning people to avoid putting loved ones here. In long My lovely bride had a massive stroke 4 months ago, and needed a temporary boost to her rehab program. Going in-patient would allow her to get more intensive physical therapy to bolster her strength. Her insurance has a limited network of SNFs they will approve, and after having to take extra time for paperwork with them, we missed our first choice and ended up here. All the negative preconceptions you might have of SNFs came true as soon as we stepped in the door. When you're a long ways away from being ready for senior living, going to a facility where that's part of the program feels unsettling. You'll have neighbors somewhere in the building who are just biding their time, and some might be kind of out of it. That's deflating, even though it's not their fault at all. This can change how the staff treats all their patients. Nothing seems urgent, other than a genuine medical emergency. We've had in-patient care at 2 hospitals and a true physical rehab hospital this year, and the level of activity there is just worlds away. That makes it even tougher to see the apathy from the staff at a place like Broadview. They weren't all bad--we found a couple nice folks in nursing and a social worker who was great. But the first room we visited had overwhelming foul odors. You picked up unpleasant smells right at the front desk, but this room seemed completely unsanitary. Soiled garments left on the bed which was supposed to be for a new arrival. The mattress was long past its expiry date, and you could feel the bed frame poking through without even putting your weight on it. The first 2 people we asked about this said it was fine, there were no issues with the room. The next room was better, but it took 4 hours for the intake person to visit and review our requests. By this point, meds were overdue. It was 2 more hours before any arrived, and some were 10-12 hours overdue before they showed up. Stroke patients need lots of different meds, many of which can't be staggered that much. We asked for other basic accommodations and had to argue--literally--before they'd even consider them. Overnight, one nurse confronted my wife, her roommate, and other patients combatively. I wasn't there to hear her comments, but they sounded like the kinds of things someone who worked in a prison would say. Even the most compassionate nurses have bad days, but they don't berate and degrade people over nothing. Not if they want to keep working in health care, I'd imagine. But here it happens. Nobody likes having to choose where to put a loved one for any of the types of care this place provides, but if you do have to make such a decision, I'd try everything to go somewhere other than here.
