My child's pain was dismissed as dental anxiety…read more My 9-year-old son had an appointment with Dr. Pytlik on October 9 for two crowns and an extraction. We paid approximately $400 for oral sedation and nitrous oxide. During treatment, my son repeatedly reported experiencing pain, but Dr. Pytlik insisted that he could not possibly be feeling pain and attributed his distress to dental anxiety. Despite my son's escalating distress, there was no apparent reassessment of whether the local anesthesia was effective. After the first crown, it became obvious to me that there was no way my son could tolerate continuing with the procedure, and I had to tell Dr. Pytlik to stop because I was concerned about my son's safety and airway. Once we got to the car, it became apparent to me that my son had no noticeable numbness. My initial thought was that perhaps there had been an issue with the local anesthetic itself, but I then realized that a failed or incomplete dental block was a more likely explanation. This made the repeated dismissal of his pain even more upsetting. I am an operating room nurse and regularly assist with procedures performed under local anesthesia and sedation. We routinely assess the adequacy of pain control and take patients' reports of pain seriously. Any anesthetic, including a dental nerve block, is not guaranteed to be 100% effective, yet Dr. Pytlik repeatedly insisted there was no way my son could be experiencing pain. In hindsight, I find that level of certainty, in the face of a child repeatedly saying he was hurting, deeply troubling. I trusted Dr. Pytlik's professional judgment during the appointment. Looking back, I deeply regret not intervening sooner. I trusted that his dentist would recognize and respond appropriately to his pain, and I feel that I let my son down by placing that trust in him. My son left this appointment traumatized and now refuses to return to Dr. Pytlik. I worry about how this experience will affect his trust in dental professionals going forward. I subsequently requested a refund for the sedation and nitrous oxide charges, since the planned treatment could not be completed and we had such a distressing experience. I was told that Dr. Pytlik attributed what happened to my son's anxiety and denied any accountability, and that my request would be reviewed. However, as of October 30, three weeks after the appointment, there has still been no contact or resolution. What makes this especially sad is that our family has been patients at this practice for many years, and our previous experiences with the staff have been wonderful. I never imagined we would be leaving under these circumstances. I made an effort to address my concerns directly with the practice before sharing this publicly, hoping there would be some acknowledgment of what my son experienced and an opportunity to repair the trust that was damaged. Unfortunately, I feel our concerns have been dismissed, and there has been no meaningful effort to make things right. Our children are so precious, and as parents, we place an enormous amount of trust in the professionals caring for them. It is heartbreaking when that trust is damaged, especially when there is no acknowledgment or attempt to repair it. My biggest concern isn't the money. It's that my child experienced pain, wasn't believed, and left the appointment more fearful of dental care than when he arrived. Children deserve to be believed when they say something hurts. Pain should never be dismissed as anxiety without first making sure that adequate pain control has been achieved.

When I saw that he was in the family business I didn't think twice about making our 1st appointment. My instincts proved to be right. Dr. Eric and his staff did what seemed like the impossible. They got my 4 year old autistic twin boys to have their teeth cleaned and do x-rays all while thinking it was fun! I appreciated how they make the first visit very educational and welcoming for all. One of my boys had to have a tooth pulled. I was nervous about having him awake for the procedure. I didn't think he would sit still. I did not give my son or them enough credit! My son laughed and giggled the entire time while watching his favorite movie and didn't even realize Dr. Eric pulled his tooth until we told him what happened. We just went back 6 months later and my son ran up to the door saying, "Is this where I lost my first tooth?" all smiles. He was excited to go back in! The staff remembered my kids and came in just to say hello. When my son later told his grandmother about his visit he said, "Someone helped me brush my teeth!" The other son kept talking about his x-rays and how he got to see his big boy teeth behind his baby teeth. He thought that was really cool. They both also loved all the toys they earned while being there. I recommend Dr. Eric to all of my friends. They were able to take my twin boys, one of whom wouldn't open his mouth for anyone, and make it an enjoyable experience. 5 stars all around!
