Anoka County Fair - Holiday in Lights at the Anoka County Fair: the old schoolhouse and newer snowfriend

Well, I'll start out that I'm not a huge fan of outdoor fairs in swampy, humid Minnesota in the…read moresummer, but I also end up going to a lot of them. Anoka's county fair is a good one... maybe not the best, but a good one. (My favorite so far is the Steele county fair.) Better than the Ramsey county fair. You get the same feel of the State Fair on a smaller and more manageable scale: the smelly animals, the greasy, overpriced food, Midway rides and rigged carnival games, and plenty of crap for sale. Plus, if you go on the right (or wrong) day and time, you'll hear the loud sounds of a demo derby or tractor pull. The upside is that if you're not into roaring engine sounds and the aroma of diesel fuel, the grounds are actually big enough to get a bit away from that. So it sounds like I'm not a fan, but yet somehow I am. I do like this stuff in limited doses. There are also some musical acts as well-- we saw a good rock band, and I wish I could remember their name. Good story! Pro tip: word on the street (and their website) is that you need to get a seat right away for the demo derby. Pro tip 2: you probably won't find me there. Free parking is the in the giant lot across from the main entrance. From the south, turn left at the lights after the bend. From the north, turn right at the lights. Look for people in bright vests and throngs of people waiting to cross the street. There are probably better mappy app directions, but I'll leave those almost rural style directions for now (and forever). Have fun!!! PS: Holiday in Lights in early December is a better way to experience the Anoka fairgrounds, in my opinion, plus it's free admission / free parking, and nachos / popcorn / cider for free or for a donation. That is, if you can tolerate Santa, Jesus, inflatable Minions, and Christmas music at distorted levels over the PA system. I can. It has a small-town winter wonderland feel to it, somewhat vintage as well. Plus it's not 90 freakin' degrees out.

Went to the fair this year it was OK but the seating was not very good for the derby and a couple…read moreof the guys got out a hand and attacked the security people which I didn't find very respectful but other than that great food and they had a lot of old tractors and stuff that were nice to look at you rarely see things like that.

Add in a slushie, popcorn, and a fountain drink and that's another $27. That's over $85 for a basic night at the movies for two. That's just wild. Compare that to Mann Theatre in Champlin or Andover Cinema, where tickets and concessions are way more affordable. Both those spots have decent food, actual specialty drinks, and don't charge you like it's a stadium event. AMC Coon Rapids is clean, has recliners, and it's not a bad setup. It's just not that special, especially when the price tag makes it feel like I should've been at a premium experience. Bottom line: not worth the money, especially when better, cheaper options are just a few miles away. I won't be back.

I can't remember the last time I stepped foot in AMC and this was my first time at the Coon Rapids one. My friend and I wanted to see Moana 2 and she took the initiative to purchase tickets so we went here for the reclined seats (even though everyone has them now...). Anywho, it wasn't a terrible experience. She chose seats for us to buy tickets in advance and they were nice and the theater wasn't busy. Plenty of parking and everything was clean. Bathrooms are nice. Seats themselves were comfortable, no complaints. They have some vegan options for food too but I always just get popcorn and it was OK. Staff were friendly and efficient, gave me a lil water cup to go with my popcorn no problem. I arrived before my friend and didn't have to show my tickets to anyone, just walked right in to use the restroom and no one batted an eye. She had to hunt someone down just to show our tickets to put her mind at ease. We'll probably be back but not my first choice, no offense, just not my favorite branch of movie theaters. 3.5/5

Kids also enjoyed the laser beam challenge, the valloroom game, and bumper ride. We didn't do the arcade or the VR but it was still plenty and the kids were super happy to spend the afternoon here! Very high priced! And to me, was not worth this kind of money. It seemed very organized and it was smooth. We didn't wait very long to be seated. It felt spacious, but that could've been because we are the end of it. The desserts were very scarce at this time. Not being replenished either. I missed having mashed potatoes and gravy. No corn or beans. Prime rib was the best. A big yuck complaint of mine, yet tables were not wiped off after each guest!!! Very unsanitary and disgusting and gross!!! All they did was lay a cloth napkin over their table cloth . Yuck. It was gross. We had food crumbs leftover from the party of people before us. There was a long black beard type hair on the table! There was a spill. It had spots of grime. I just didn't want to even touch the table at all. I didn't want to set my plate on my napkin covering all this nasty from before me! Ish! It was very dirty. Even on a cloth tablecloth you have to wash it off. So, gross tables and the price was just too high. We will try somewhere else next year.

The course has been in good shape both times, with green fairways but some burnt out areas around tees and high-use areas. The greens are receptive and surprisingly quick, presenting enough contours that some pin positions are challenging to chip to. All in all, this is a fairly straightforward layout. There's a long Par 5 around a large lake that presents several risk-reward shots. The Par 3's can be pretty easy with a front pin, but the greens are large enough that a back pin calls for 1-3 more clubs. Staff are very friendly and accommodating, although I don't believe I ever saw a ranger on the course. The pro shop is pretty well stocked, and the snack bar offers a number of craft beers along with limited grilled menu items. This would be a great course to play a relaxing round of golf (if such a thing really exists!).

The theater offers concessions and beverages to consume during the shows, however this has been suspended during the pandemic. The theater still requires proof of vac, and that patrons wear masks. Being in a high risk category, I appreciate the precautions! Yellow Tree is a great local theater worthy of your attention!
