Well, wish I had seen the reviews on here before stopping by with the family. Months ago we had…read moretraveled to Texas to search out a new place to live. Texas sounded so lovely and we love the weather. We visited five different major cities and drove through tons of lovely little towns all filled with charming history and warm, friendly people. To keep the kids happy, we made sure there were plenty of stops along the way for fun and adventure. We stopped by the Sweetwater Pioneer City Museum to tour the main home, the chapel, and the art gallery. We were originally excited to learn its history however, we were greeted by a woman who, while seemingly nice, wanted nothing more than to discuss politics and act like we were long lost friends. Aside from that, the main home is amazing. Built in 1912, it is definitely reminiscent southern charm. Gorgeous hardwood floors and an amazing staircase, the restoration is exquisite. Melonnia or Melony was her name. She was polite at first, very knowledgeable about the history of the Patterson and Melvin McCoy families who owned the home but after giving us what felt like a scripted guide, she would not stop talking about her political views. She clearly has some deranged hatred for the president of the US and when one of the kids chimed in to ask why she was talking so rudely to us, she verbally lashed out at our child and said some not so nice things. A lovely home, lots of history and charm, but maybe avoid this place until the political fervor in this country dies down. We'll stay away from this place and avoid its drama.

Have not been, but will just add the following note from their website:…read moreMelonnie Hicks is no longer an employee of the museum as of back in March 2020. Her views do not reflect those of the staff or board members. I saw the same post about her making its rounds through Facebook today (her original post was back in March) and thought I would take 10 seconds to fact check it. Not sure what else the museum should do, be perpetually punished for something an ex-employee posted 7+ months ago?

I came to find out about LHUCA through attending the First Friday art trail events in the area…read more Technically, the event is named after this place and has the gallery as its central focal point. The idea being to come stroll through the gallery, then work your way out onto the cordoned off streets and check out local art vendors and handmade goods before settling on beers and live music or performances somewhere along the way. This gallery always has a perfect assortment of displays running the gamut between peculiar to practical. I've seen some incredible handmade pottery mugs for sale, and some bizarre installations of another form of pottery: the toilet. It is, nevertheless, wonderful to have such a place in little ol' Lubbock. There are some beautiful large art pieces that hang on the walls making up the majority of the contents. Paintings, photography, mosaics. All sorts of media. Some for sale, albeit often at quite high prices, and many marked "NFS", or "Not For Sale". There's a very tiny little shop selling remnants of older installations, as well as "extras" made by some of the artists. It's quaint. A front desk has flyers and cards for the current and future exhibits. My favorite, they also have a pile of free stickers with the center name on them. Even in a time when retailers and restaurants struggle to keep staff, they always have plenty of attendants working the gallery to answer questions and shout at you if you dare touch the art. That's commendable and makes the experience all the more whole. It's been 7 years between the latest review and mine, but the place is still kickin' and worth visitin'!

Where do I want to go as my first stop during the first Friday art trail?…read more THE LHUCA OF COURSE. This building is one of my top favorite structures in Lubbock. It is very spacious and holds so many art appreciators all at once. It is the hub of the first friday art trail that happens every first friday of the month 6pm-9pm rain or shine! It is also open throughout the week to visit. During the first friday art trail they also serve beer and wine for a small cost. The Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts is an amazing addition to the sometimes known as boring Lubbock, Tx. It keeps the city excited about up and coming artists and their work. I love that our City has such an amazing establishment to enrich the locals.
