Although I didn't get dessert, I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the wonderful food. However, here's the controversy--Abuelita and I are Puerto Rican. So, how can I rightfully judge and compare food culturally different from where my expertise lies? One could argue that critics do it all of the time. I shall leave this debate for other's and argue my authority on this----those who know true Carribean food know true Carribean food. This is because there are certain constants that span across those cultures--you just know! For instance, sofrito; the base of almost every Carribean culture. Rice, beans and bananas---there you have it. Now, what struck me almost immediately as I waited behind other patrons ordering brfore me; is that, they did not tell the lovely lady behind the counter what they wanted---rather, they all politely asked (losely translated): "what did you make today mother?" I nearly melted as I knew such ettiquete losely translated in a tespect for the cook and a trust so deep in the qauilty of the food of the establishment that you would be content with the blessing of whatever "mother" decided to cook that day. I turned around and smiled at my wife and told her before ever tasting the food "you're going to love it." We did the same, asked what mother had made, and as she opened each lid--there revealed goat in stew, pork soup, white rice cooked with olive oil, beans, fried bananas and beef and chicken stews. We ordered and sat to await the feast. Our seat was by a window overlooking Readings more modest neighborhoods while inside, old Spanish men sat cross legged watch something on the hanging TV. Subtle and complex flavors only achieved by recipies with no precise measurements and created through hours of slow cooking---and most importantly, like my Abuelitas cooking; I did not leave feeling stuffed like Latino/Carribean food tends to do. The food was light and airy, clean but complex. Deep but simple. I've been to Spanish restuarants from Phillys Badlands to Spanish Harlem and none have anything on Ana's. If you're ever in Reading or even the Philly area and are craving some Latino/Carribean food-- the 45 min. ride is so worth it. Andrew Zimmern, where ever you are---please do this place.
