We stopped here after hiking up to Roughlock Falls. We had a large group of 14 including 7 children. They pushed 3 tables together but the 4 older children (10-13 years old) had to sit at a separate table. Our waitress took our drink orders, but then "had to close out a few tables" before she could bring our drinks. 20 minutes later, we finally had our drinks but....she brought the wrong beer for one of the adults and it took her 15 minutes to bring the correct one. We ordered appetizers, but didn't receive them until after our main dishes were served. Our main dishes did not come out together, and half of the kids were served last. Most restaurants make a point to serve children first-this one did not. We had a grilled cheese that only had 1 side grilled. A turkey bacon avocado sandwich without bacon. Soggy buns on hamburgers. A side salad with 1 cherry tomato, 1/2 of a slice of a cucumber, and the rest just lettuce. The buffalo stew was ok, but it had cocktail onions in it instead of regular onions. It took more than 30 minutes for everyone to get their food-more than enough time for the orders to be accurate. By the time we all had our food, we were only 1 of 2 tables in the restaurant. So, it definitely wasn't super busy. Not looking for a discount or anything comped, we addressed the situation with the manager. Her response "there's nothing I can do for you. Maybe I can give the adults a free beer". Really?! Maybe try apologizing for the crummy service and poor quality of the food. I'd definitely avoid this restaurant. read more

If this is the right place (not sure why its address is Lead) it's right across from the Spearfish Canyon Lodge. Stop by and asked to be seated outside, if it's the right season. The view is spectacular and you can hear Spearfish Falls roaring nearby. We were there for breakfast - the French toast was out of this world! read more

Very cozy lodge type restaurant in the heart of Spearfish Canyon-you would be hard pressed to find a prettier, more romantic spot. wide variety of menu with Walleye, Buffalo, Trout, prime rib, etc. for dinner and very reasonable lunch menu as well. Service was great and very popular with the snowmobilers. We drove by this place several times thinking it wasn't that busy for a good restaurant, but they proved us wrong and we would definitely recommend and we will be back read more

Poor service. 30 minutes wait to receive lukewarm, stale, soggy food which we didn't finish. Was given the wrong meal ticket to pay. Left hungry and dissatisfied. Highly disappointing!! read more

We had the hamburger buffet. I was turned off by burgers available to us stored in water. I enjoy a burger hot off the grill. The salad lettuce was in huge pieces. Probably by now you know that I wasn't happy with the options. I think a menu item might have been a better choice. read more

Beautiful setting. Vegetarians beware, though. Not much on the menu and they don't really understand. Ordered a pasta without the chicken but it still came with bacon, and they would not take it off the bill. We did not try much very hard to not pay for it, though, so more out fault for not being more assertive when ordering and when we found out there was bacon in our vegetarian pasta. read more

We stayed one night at Spearfish Canyon Lodge, and as others have mentioned, there are not a lot of options for meals in the area. We had dinner at Latchstring, even though the reviews are mixed. First, the positive, and the reason for one star (otherwise i would have given it zero stars if I could). The restaurant setting is very nice ... has a lodge-feel to it with great views. The cheesy potato soup and bread were both good. That was the highlight of the meal. There were 4 of us for dinner. We ordered a grilled chicken Caesar salad, pan fried Walleye with mashed potatoes and grilled veg, garlic carbonara, and pasta margarite. It was inedible. And cold. Cold, bland pasta, lukewarm fish on a bed of cold mashed potatoes and cold veg, and the most uninspired Caesar salad I've ever seen. The side salad looked better than the entree salad ... at least the side salad had croutons, unlike the entree salad. The best part was the server stopped by the table to let us know the carbonara was going to have an egg cracked on top of it, and the hot pasta would cook the egg. Um, no. It was all a raw, uncooked cold mess. When the server asked how our meal was, we told him everything was lukewarm/cold. He did ask if there was anything we wanted heated up. I can only imagine how awesome the food would have tasted once it was nuked in the microwave. We all left the majority of our food untouched and had to pay nearly $80 for terrible food. read more

Ate a couple meals here in late May and would give the food a 3.5 out of 5. Service a solid 4 and the ambiance (if you like log cabin look) a solid 5. View from the windows is Spearfish Canyon cliffs and forest covered hills. Prices were good, had the trout. An entire bus load of people arrived just as we were seated but staff wasn't frantic and our order and food didn't seem delayed because of the heavy rush. read more

The food was decent and the view excellent (patio seating). I wish I could say the same for our waitress. She was abysmal at best. Complained the entire time about a "bus load" that just came through and the mess they made (looked like they sat at three-four tables, no "mess"). Sat us on the patio and then disappeared for 15-20 minutes before ever taking our drink and food orders. Never once came back after dropping off the food. Had to flag down another waiter for a water refill. When she dropped off our food 15-20 minutes later (salad, pulled pork sandwich), it took a further five minutes to get silverware and napkins, in which time she bused another table. Contemplated several times just leaving while we were waiting to order drinks - in hindsight, we should have. Another couple was leaving as we sat down and said "hope you have three hours to wait around." That should have been our clue to leave. When we were finished eating, we waited for the waitress to pick up our check. After waiting at the table, we waited at the register up front. After NOBODY coming to cash us out, we just left the payment at the register and walked out. Several waitresses saw us, including our own, but none came to take care of the check. If all you're looking for is a place to sit around for a couple hours, then this is your place. DON'T expect to be in a hurry. DON'T expect to get your food order right (she had to go back for part of it). DON'T expect to get a refill on drinks. DON'T expect to get your food or drinks in a timely manner. DO expect to have to flag down other waiters to get drink refills. DO expect to regret any tip you may leave. DON'T expect to ever want to come back again. DON'T expect to recommend this to ANYONE. Strike 1: Menu online doesn't match actual menu. This matters to people with specific diets. Strike 2: Salad came with wrong dressing...correct dressing requested, and came FIFTEEN minutes later. Strike 3: THIRTY minutes after ordering, we were told they were out of one of our dishes. We got up left. We stopped in the other night for dinner and had a wonderful time! It wasn't very busy and our server gave us just the right amount of attention. She was very knowledgeable about the food items and any questions we had and very nice. I had the beef tip tortellini and he had the garlic ribeye - both were so great! read more

If I could give this restaurant zero stars, I would. My parents were in town for the weekend and we wanted to try something new in the beautiful black hills canyon. Not only was the atmosphere very bleak, but the service was horrible. It seemed like all of the waitresses had no idea what they were doing. It took forever to get our drinks and we probably waited a good 45 minutes before our food arrived. My mom is vegan so all she was able to order was French fries, and when they finally arrived, they were soggy and cold. I ordered a chicken Caesar wrap and when it came, there was no dressing in the wrap. At first we were going to order the buffet but that was utterly disgusting looking. When we FINALLY received our check, they tried to charge us 75$ for our meal. We addressed them about it and they brought us a new check, which was also incorrect. I will not be going back, nor will I ever recommend this restaurant. Thoroughly disappointed! read more

I would give this "restaurant" zero stars if I could. We arrived with a large party however the place was not super busy. The manager made a rather snarky comment about not making a reservation but graciously put 3 tables together and had a separate table for the older kids. Our waitress was either slow or new because she was terrible. It took her 20 minutes to get us water. She was surprised that we wanted to order our food after waiting another 15 minutes when she came back for our drink orders. We ordered appetizers that were served after our main dish, grilled cheese was only cooked on one side, salad had half of a slice of cucumber and one cherry tomato. Kids meals were served after the adults and they even brought out an extra grilled cheese sandwich that no one ordered. My daughter ended up eating some of the other meals because her chicken tenders still weren't ready after 30 minutes. I mean really, how long does it take to deep fry chicken strips? My advice, find somewhere else to spend your money read more
