Forget all the stereotypes and awful things you've heard about California public transit. You hear of how little there is and how nasty they are. You hear that while people say California is a car culture state. While both those things are true the new LAX Metro Transit Center is a marvelous hub of public transportation. Built in mind to service the thousands of people who'll come in for the summer Olympics in 2028 this transport hub will remain long after the tourists leave and it'll become a central and integral part of public transport for Los Angelenos. Everything is shiny and clean. Large swathes of steel and glass give everything an open air feel. The security patrolling every 50 feet or so means the place feels secure and seen. The large shuttle docks makes for easy understanding of where the buses are going. And once the people mover or sky tram or whatever LAX will call it connects to this transit center going into LAX will become so convenient. No more fighting traffic to get in. Simply take a monorail over to each terminal. I've already used it several times to go to LAX without the sky tram and it was convenient. It'll only get better once that's implemented. Most Americans who've travelled abroad romanticize train stations and public transit, and rightfully so. When we lack something that feels so integral to public spaces it's hard not to yearn for it. But with LAX Metro Transit Center and the future lines connecting through it we can start romanizing our own lives here in California.

The Los Angeles bus service is underrated and popular, and has spent a lot of money trying to turn LA into a city that actually has a good form of public transport infrastructure, but so far not so good, because people haven't really started to see that LA can be easy to get around. And in some ways it isn't, because it is so sprawling and has so many different centers if you will. But they're doing a good job, with a very difficult project, and I'm definitely willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and say that things are improving since I lived there quite some time ago. The escalators are usually working here compared to others that can go down from time to time as well as the elevators. Originally opening in 1996 as the final station of the LA Metro Purple Line (now officially the D…read moreline), Wilshire/Western is an underground station 50 - 70 feet below ground. It serves as one of the primary stations for Koreatown, and one I've used a multitude of times. There is a large open air plaza right above, making its entrance easy to recognize, but also serving as a magnet for vagrants. It is close to a variety of businesses (mostly Korean) that we frequent. It has served as the end of the very short D Line for a long time (and thus both sides of the platform has trains going to the same place), but will lose that title once the D Line extension (taking it all the way to UCLA) is done. The next segment will open in May 2026, going to Beverly Hills, then Century City, then finally to Westwood. One thing to note is I noticed the use of train cars with a different configuration that I'm used to on LA Metro. Instead of having seats facing forward/backward four across, this configuration has a lot more seats up against the wall, eliminating having to sit where someone could be right behind you. Learned that this is called 'New York-style' bench seating: there is a lot less sitting space, but more capacity for each car overall, with the majority of people standing. Definitely more useful for lines with more frequent stops contributing to shorter ride times.

I'd recommend Google mapping the locations of stations as they can be hidden underground and I've seen tourists easily get lost. Heck, I even struggle sometimes! The Metro's E Line fare must be paid in advance or else you won't be let onboard. It's not like other cities where you can easily slide your way in. I'd also recommend taking a friend with you for safety, it can get pretty quiet. Thankfully, I was with someone and the E Line's station was busy. So after getting comfortable with parking at Atlantic Station and riding the train to the Coliseum, I suddenly no longer need to do so in the near future, because you can bet I won't go to a USC game--especially at the Coliseum--if it's not against Notre Dame. The E Line is great, though. For those of you who don't know, the current E Line is a combination of the former Expo Line in almost its entirety and the Downtown-to-East L.A. portion of the former Gold Line. Metro dug some additional underground tunnels, joined the formerly separate train lines, and now you can travel from Atlantic Station in East L.A. to Downtown Santa Monica Station all on a single fare, without having to change trains. I've never traveled the entirety of the line, but I'm very familiar with the eastern portion. The E Line will become even more useful to me and my family in the future, too, because they plan to run it all the way to Whittier, across the street from the hospital where I was born. For now, it's still useful to me for King games at Staples Center. I've never actually taken it to one, but it's much less hectic to park in Atlantic Station's parking garage than it is to look for street parking downtown--I refuse to pay to park for King games--and the walk from the arena itself to Pico Station is short and direct. When you do ride this line from Atlantic through Exposition Park and back, it's really interesting just to see how many people board and off-board at seemingly random times. The train can go from full to the gills to almost empty in a few stops, only to fill back up two more stops down the line. In other words, a lot of people use the E Line for not only long hauls but to go short distances. It's truly a train line of and for the people.

Willowbrook / Rosa Parks Station is nostalgic to me time infinity. This LA Metro station was the first I ever visited back in the early 90s, riding with my brother and our aunts or dad - learning more about public transportation and the south side of Los Angeles. Growing up in South Central LA from 1985 to 1997 the Green and Blue line were ones we knew. Mainly for short trips, we got to see the 105 be constructed and the Avalon Station (just before Willowbrook/Rosa Parks) follow a couple years after. Growing up within walking distance of Avalon and a one stop ride to Willowbrook/Rosa Parks anytime I pass this Metro Blue A Line station that connects to the Metro Green C line I flashback to those 90s vibes. The Kenneth Hahn Plaza very nearby was a plaza we frequented - the McDonald's, Denny's and everything that was once there. I have been a few times in the last few years for various reasons and explored the old neighborhoods. There is parking lot for commuters - over 200 spaces and unlike some station it's free - though super generified it's still South Central - security, police station and metro employees on duty and all in one place. The bus drivers are told to allow/ignore fare evaders, which I think is a foolish policy, but there's nothing I can do about that.
