They've definitely upgraded the safety of the Metro with new gates, semi-heavy police presence which is nice to see. I don't like these new super brightly lit "face everyone" trains. At 5am, the operating room bright lights are extreme before your eyeballs are awake. Also, the bench style seats along the side wall of the train forcing you to face-off with those on the other side. Feels uncomfortable making sure you're not staring someone down. Overall, the Metro does keeping trying to make their experience better, so that's commendable and appreciated. read more

Great option to make your way to different parts of LA. I hate driving through DTLA and parking in Hollywood got so difficult and expensive. As an European I miss public transportation. This line is helpful to get to Hollywood, many stops in DTLA, Union Station. You can change the line for other lines to get to other LA areas. It's far from perfect. Better lately with more security and a tad cleaner. Less weird folks on trains. But they need a higher frequency, people to help with tickets ( I always end up helping folks, need a discount LOL), cleaner trains, more reliable service and clear signage. I get tired of hearing that Metro is working to improve service for the Olympics. No! Do it now! For us Angelenos. They need to improve their service and make a smooth public transportation system here like in other big cities. It would help everyone and diminish driving and pollution. Frequent Metro rider especially my local B aka Red Line. North Hollywood being one of the main starting station/final station heading well northbound and Union Station being the far end final stop/starting station south. The Metro B has to boarding points from at the intersection of Chandler Blvd & Lankershim Blvd, with the Metro G (OranGe) line hub being one and the North Hollywood metro bus hub being the other. You can take the stairs down on either side as well as elevators making them accessible to many if not most. The escalator on the Orange Line side only is ascending, unlike the main entrance on the east side of these two tunnels down to Metro Line destinations. It's artsy, clean at times, but also with wear and tear... litter, graffiti and unfortunately miscellaneous items on the track. The metro train itself can vary from cart to cart some much cleaner than others, but ultimately it's not just a city of LA issue to upkeep it's us. Those spills of food, beverages, dropped items, etc... Isn't just people without permanent homes. A guy in a rush spilling his sunflower seeds everyone O.O... A little girl throwing her juice... It only takes a sec to clean it up or let someone know who works for metro. Every little bit helps. You'll definitely encounter a slice of life riding, maybe even some episodic interactions, catch a performance from dancers or musicians and maybe even luck into a guy on the grind selling essential items like socks, refreshments, chargers or earbuds. The metro B has a lot of ups and downs to it... Especially it's gaps in time later in the evening, especially after 6PM when the frequency slows... Not to mention they're not 24hrs! Definitely hope to see it improve in coming years before the Olympics in 2028, I'll do my part to ensure... Hopefully you will as well... And like they say if you see something... I ride the gold line more often & today was my first time riding the red line. It was very shocking & disgusting since I'm comparison the gold line is far better maintained, cleaner, & updated. The red line looks 15 years overdue for an update but more than anything it's horribly disgusting. Unsurprisingly there is a very large homeless population riding, probably more than half of the riders are homeless, severely mentally ill, drug addicts, or all of the above in one. I truly felt my safety had a likely chance of being jeopardized since there was screaming suspicion looking people. However I would say the most disturbing issue is how disgusting the train is. Theres filth everywhere so I did not want to sit but rather stand. At one of the stations there was clearly human feces smeared/stepped on directly on the platform entrance. I couldnt wait to get off & go back home using the gold line. LA obviously has a serious transportation problem with traffic, & public transportation would be the answer to that issue, but if the city doesn't address how horrible public trans is in every aspect, people will not want to use the metro, & traffic will worsen. The red line ALONE is pretty decent. It takes me from Hollywood to downtown LA relatively quickly and for only $1.25 Unlike MUNI or BART in SF, the red line isn't as busy as it should be. Partof the problem is that public transportation in LA doesn't connect well so it goes from point A to B but doesn't connect with all the other systems the way it does in NY, SF or Boston. I used to ride the Metro Red Line pre-pandemic for work, save gas, the planet, etc. and it was great when most of your fellow riders are people going to and from work, school, etc. I stopped riding because of the pandemic, but I wanted to try it out again, and was disappointed at how bad the Red Line (B line) has become in 2022. The seats and floors are so dirty and often smells so bad inside. On a recent ride one weekday, I kid you not, a homeless man stood up and pissed on the seat he was on. He took a long piss too. A lady next him nearly knocked me over trying to get away as I stood near the exit. I've taken it several times recently, and it's been bad most every time. The homeless and drug addicts, and types you don't want to mess around with have taken over. There was safety in numbers, but I don't get that feeling anymore. People have stopped taking metro and will continue to do so if Metro doesn't fix the homeless situation, as they use the trains as their bedrooms and bathrooms. I used to take Metrolink to attend jury duty. Coming from the 626 the portion on the red line is a very brief one, as the trip was mostly on the gold line; however, this portion started at Union Station. During my last trip I arrived at Union Station before 7AM. I was quickly accosted by a likely homeless gentleman offering me drugs as I walked to the next platform. I tried ignoring him to no avail. He became agitated but luckily for him he moved on before I lost my cool. The entire time I was inside the train station and not one cop/station employee was in sight. After composing myself and getting on the train, I noticed a couple of disheveled folks sleeping in my car and a few more wandering from seat to seat. At this point, I got off at the next stop and walked my way to the court house. The streets of LA may not be safe, but it looked like the safer option compared to that train. read more

I want to like the Metro Red Line because of the famously bad LA traffic. I'd like to be part of the solution and not part of the traffic problem. The major concern with the Red Line is the city is powerless or unwilling to deal with the crush of homeless people occupying the Red Line - trains, the stations, and train platforms. Every time I have utilized the Red Line in the past year, probably 50 rides in total, I have been asked for money by panhandlers, observed people stretched out sleeping on the floor of the stations with their homeless belongings, jumping the turnstiles without paying, smoking in doors, and more recently observed many schizophrenic homeless people yelling at passengers like myself. I only see uniformed security officers maybe once every 10 stations. I routinely see law enforcement checking fare cards on the Gold Line, but I never see anyone checking the Red Line. The homeless know they can live inside the station and Red Line trains without having to worry about getting in trouble. Over the last year I've observed more and more lightly used trains since homeless people are sleeping and smelling up most of them. I also observed a homeless individual physically attack another rider. Uniformed security arrived quickly, however all they did was talk into their radios, they did not attempt to find or detain the attacker. After 20 minutes I left since I had somewhere to be, but "real" law enforcement had not shown up in the meantime. I attempted to use one of the emergency intercoms to report a schizophrenic homeless person yelling at passengers, but the intercom was broken. Complaints to Metro result in assurances they have "homeless outreach," but what they need is not "outreach" but actual security and law enforcement to protect this train system. The homeless people belong in mental health treatment facilities, not the train system we spent many billions of tax dollars to build and maintain. Sadly I can no longer use the Red Line since my wife feels unsafe riding it after we've been accosted by at least a dozen mentally ill homeless. Maybe we'll try again in a year or so if Los Angeles cleans it up, but I am not optimistic. read more

I ride the Red Line six days a week and everyday is an unpleasant experience. There is a plethora of transients on the train taking up seats and smelling up entire cars. On top of that, many of them are aggressive and cause problems for riders for no reason. They litter and spread filth throughout cars and stations. Bus line 120 west is NEVER NEVER EVER on time. I start looking at the schedule at 4:30 pm. It's supposed to arrive at my stop at 5:08 pm. The Red Line and the entire subway system run by Metro were much needed improvements to a city based on automobiles since the 1950s because General Motors (GM) destroyed the street car and electric trains system of Los Angeles (http://bit.ly/xXpSq). While I admit that I ride the subway on and off, especially when I have to visit Downtown Los Angeles (DTLA) where parking can be a nightmare, there are just too many things wrong with Metro's subway system... therefore, when I can, I drive. Forget the fact that you need a TAP (Transit Access Pass) card to even ride the system, forget the fact that there is a lack of security (a passenger was fatally stabbed on a train in 2011), and forget the fact that you can illegally enter the subway system because the turnstiles are not locked at most stations. What Metro really needs to fix is how they handle subway service disruptions. I mean, one little hiccup and the entire subway infrastructure goes haywire. Yesterday, while riding the Red Line from the Vermont/Wilshire Station going towards Union Station at around 4:15 PM, there was a major delay due to an incident at Pershing Square that occurred around 3:00 PM where a man was struck by a train and killed. While I feel bad for the victim and his family, as a passenger, I believe that Metro should have sent employees to subway stations so that riders would have been informed about the significant delays allowing them to plan for alternatives such as riding one of the many buses that head downtown. Sadly, Metro did not do this. Therefore, it was not until I was on the actual train that the conductor informed passengers that the train would not be headed to Union Station and that it was being rerouted at the next station (Westlake/Mac Arthur) so all passengers would have to disembark. Moreover, the conductor claimed that the next train would be able to take passengers, but when that train and subsequent trains arrived, they were all sent back the way they came. After waiting at least 35 minutes on the subway platform with no contact with the outside world because Metro's subway system has no cellphone reception like the subways in Seoul and New York, a Metro employee finally came down to the platform to inform delayed passengers that a shuttle bus would be transporting people directly to Union Station. Unfortunately, what this worker failed to mention was that the shuttle had left because by the time I got street-side to Alvarado Street, there was no shuttle and the Metro employees explained that they had no ETA for the next one. By this point I was a bit irked because I needed to meet the wife in DTLA to grab some beers at Angel City Brewery. So I asked the employees what the workaround was. Their response was that I could take any of the eastbound buses and to explain to the bus driver what had happened to get the fee waived. Getting on the 51 bus, I explained to the driver what happened and she was surprised. If anything, Metro should have sent out a bulletin to their employees stating that there was a disruption to subway service and that a flood of people would be riding buses and that they should not be required to pay again. Fortunately the driver was understanding and waived the fee. While on the bus I noticed that it did not go to Union Station and instead the closest I could get was 7th and San Pedro before the bus turned south towards Compton. Since I was already on the bus, I had no choice but to get off at 7th and San Pedro, right smack in the middle of Skid Row. Thank heavens for long summer days because Skid Row is not a place to be at night. Anyways, I walked briskly on major streets and made it to my final destination of Angel City Brewery at 5:45 PM. During my walk, I thought about Metro's ridiculous response to the incident and how their crisis response plan is really lacking and deficient. I mean imagine if there had been a major incident like the sarin attack in Tokyo or a possible Al Qaeda attack since we've been under "red alert" status the past couple weeks! With Metro's response, you'd walk right into the disaster. SMH. At the end of the day, it worries me that despite several instances on Metro's subway system, Metro has not implemented a better communications system with their employees to handle emergencies. Perhaps Metro should look into cellular phone reception for their subway system and/or install platform screen doors (http://bit.ly/SmfQH) at subway stations to prevent accidents like the one that occurred on August 6, 2013. While I know Metro will respond by saying such improvements are cost-prohibitive, I think that instead of spending money by expanding Metro's subway they need to improve their existing system first and improve how they respond to future crises. Circumstances caused me to have to take the metro red line to Union Station. I figured it couldn't be that bad, I mean I used to take it all the time when I lived in Hollywood. Well, I was grossly mistaken. The only thing that wasn't dirty was the machine I got the tap card from. Dirty floors, a filthy train that looks like it has never seen any cleaner so how could it ever be sanitized for the general public(you know, because of covid), people were literally smoking on the train. From Vine to Union Station, I saw several cleaning crews although I have no clue what they actually clean. It's certainly not all that graffiti, nor the petrie dish of a subway. Literally across the street from the theater too. 5 stars for price and locations. And you can use credit cards! This is a dream for some of my friends who drink. But if you've read my Yelp reviews of Yelp events where I've had more than two strong drinks, you know how I prefer sitting in my car sexting. Or talking to my Yelp buddies Harmonies T and Sarah A. I'm a notorious lightweight who have been known to sit in front of another Yelper's house to 2 am sexting and texting after a party that ended by 10 am. But honestly, I'd rather sober up in my car than on the Red Line. It questionable at night. I recommend it for convenience rather than for drinking reasons unless you're with friends. It is true from the song "Freaks Comes Out at Night" by an Old School artist Whodini. I believe him now since I was on the MTA Metro Red Line train from Union Station going up to Hollywood. Each rail ride is $1.25 per trip, or you may purchase a day pass for $5.00 which is cheaper should you ride more than one different Metro Metro Line. During the day, the Red Line commute is wonderful. it's very enjoyable as it is not at crowded in Los Angeles compared to New York. It eliminates the headaches of driving around Los Angeles, and especially diffuses our impure thoughts about the hassles of looking for a parking space. However, at nights... the later it gets, weird people starts boarding the subway. It was so amusing to see a funny tattooed, probably wannabe gangster strutting on board. I'm sorry to stereotype, but it was too funny. He kept lifting his plaid shirt, adjusting his baseball cap, and pulling up his pants. His pose in front of the sliding glass doors was absolutely hilarious! Yes, I grew up in East Los Angeles and have encounter real gangsters when I use to work at my parent's business after school. Another weird person sitting close to me was I believe Schizophrenic. It's sad, but realistically it's not funny. He was talking to himself while eating his dinner, until he suddenly offers me his food. It was extremely nice of the fella to offer, but of course I refused. God Bless Him! Anyhow, the Red Line is semi comfortable. But a subway moving at high speeds with the constant jerking is already a getting use to process. The seats are hard, and sometimes it's dirty. But anyhow, it's still bearable. The trains runs frequent, with an approximate fifteen minutes lapse time for each train that comes by at any station you might be at. However, the subway system shuts down everyday at 1:00 a.m. So be sure to be at your desired destination prior to that time. The MTA Metro Line is a great way to go green. I highly encourage everybody to try riding it at least once. It's a great experience as you learn to memorize Los Angeles geography. They should improve on informing the riders on which sides to stand while waiting for the train. It's very confusing as you go downstairs to the railway area. The Metro Lines should also improve with signs telling us exactly the direction it's headed along with the locations brightly lit. Newbies like myself can easily get confused and lost. Also, each box car should have a map of it's destinations and stops indicating where the train is located... via GPS. Other city subways I have rode on besides outdated New York, is a bit easier to take. The Los Angeles subway took twenty years to complete since conception. And we all know how outdated a technology can be after five years. So L.A., please update your subways information system. Just a thought, I don't recommend females to travel alone in the train at nights. Please be safe! I would give it four stars, but the lack of clear signs informing the rider, and the lack of maps in the trains makes it difficult for newbies. So three stars for now. read more

This review is for ALL Metro rail within Los Angeles. I'm rating this line, because it's the original dedicated heavy rail line in the system, configured as a subway, and which connects the base of the Valley to downtown Los Angeles, with stops at key Hollywood landmarks. The good stuff: the cars are modern and clean, the stations are nicely done, the prices are fair, the frequency is effective, and the system feels safe. The bad stuff: why the hell wasn't something like this in place before? It's almost inexcusable that the smaller Bay Area opened the tri-county BART heavy-rail system in 1972 while booming Los Angeles had nothing. General comments: - there should be NO light rail - the Green Line from LAX to Rosa Parks moves along fairly nicely, but the Blue Line and the Gold Line are not that great, with some real slow spots and at-grade segments.The Green, the Blue and the Gold should have been heavy rail - the Red Line should have gone out to the West Valley, past Sepulveda and close to the Warner Center - the Purple Line needs to go to the West Side and the ocean instead of a nearby Aqua/Expo Line - there should be a line to the southern part of the SGV that would turn down into Whittier - there should be a 405/Sepulveda line starting up in the Valley and which would "arc" and intersect an "extended" Red, as described above, the Purple when it hits the West Side, the Green to LAX, and the Blue to Long Beach Only then would L.A. have a world class subway or elevated heavy-rail system serving most of the city and its heavy-hitter suburbs. read more

After riding on the Green and Blue lines in LA, the Metro in Paris, The Tube in London and the subways in Boston and NYC...I should have been smart enough to pay attention to where the train was headed. I got on the Red Line today from Union Station and I didn't read where it was headed and ended up on the Purple Line so I had to back track one station and get on the Hollywood Red Line. I got off at Hollywood and Highland and returned at Hollywood and Vine back to Union Station. I love riding Metro even if it takes longer than driving. It is convenient and I don't have to worry about traffic or parking. I wish we had a better system in LA but I still highly recommend getting out of your car and going Metro. I just picked up my TAP card today at Union Station. It's like the Oyster Card in London. Put money on the card and tap the card at the station and it deducts the money from your card read more

I pulled up the transit option it would take me half this time and for only $1.75. Given the love hate relationship that I have with LA traffic, the metro red line is a great way to get to select destinations without sitting in rush hour traffic. If you live in LA you'll know that there's never a good time to be on the road unless you're up at the ass crack of dawn. Even then it's a crapshoot depending on where you're going. The entire process is very straightforward. Head down into the station, buy a tap card or a single ride ticket. Tap your card and go through the turnstile. The signage at these stations make it very easy to identify the train and its intended destination. Also the station timetables are listed on the Metro website and it's very accurate. I gave public transportation a shot in LA just to see how it goes and I'm digging it! read more

I live within walking distance of the North Hollywood station and $1.25 each way, can avoid the high parking fees downtown or in Hollywood and save gas. However, I wish the Red Line went all the way to the Westside and also went later into the evening (we are always rushing to catch the latest train--which is usually around 12:30 at night) back to North Hollywood. The red line is a very fast and easy way to get to Downtown or North Hollywood from Hollywood. Going to school (Hollywood/Highland to Civic Center) takes about 20 minutes. When the trains are delayed, which is not often - as I've seen the purple line have more delays, they will announce it on the moving tv's or over loudspeaker. Not the cleanest of places, I see cleaners cleaning on a daily basis, I think that there is just so much foot traffic it's hard to keep up, and sometimes you see some total freaks (case in point, I'm pretty sure tonight the homeless man on the seat opposite mine was masturbating....ugh yeah....next stop I get on again like 4 cars down). I've been on the red line twice and each time I couldn't help but think I was on Blaine the Mono from The Dark Tower. If you've read the book, you'd understand why I'm making the reference. The Red Line can be confusing if you don't know what you're doing or not paying attention to the signs. Buy an all day pass, go underground, and read very carefully. I almost got on the wrong train but luckily I took a moment to look at the map, read the overhead signs, and realize I needed the North Hollywood train vs Union Station but good thing I figured that out quick because they both departed at the same time. Yikes. Other than that, it's crowded on the weekends. I had to stand for 8 stops before I finally got off. If you're not feeling well (like I was), that can suck and I hated being tossed around and losing my footing each time. Also, there's no signal down there so bring a book and find something else to do while on the train. People watching is always fun. read more

Just UGH.  Needed to take a bus from Union Station and needed to park for five days, so I was shown to the MTA underground parking lot. It was PACKED so I had to go all the way down to the 4th floor, which looked like a scene from a zombie apocalypse movie. Trash, broken chairs/furniture, dumpsters, and lots of other debris EVERYWHERE. Every other parking spot was useless because of all the trash. I ran over a bolt while looking for a spot and ended up getting a flat.  My friend called them on our way back to the lot to complain about the disgusting condition of the lot and the damage to my vehicle because of it. We told them we were on the 4th floor and they said they'd take care of the parking. When my friend and I arrived back at our car we refused to pay for the parking because of the poorly-kept lot. If you deem yourselves "not responsible" for anything that happens to my vehicle under YOUR watch, then I'm "not responsible" for paying $6 a day. We called AAA to come and fix my tire, and they asked for proof that AAA had to come. We followed the tow truck out of the lot (they clearly saw him because they had to let him out) and then informed us that since they "couldn't find our car on the 4th floor", they were just going to "let us slide" and let us out without paying. Never again, MTA lot. I'd rather pay to valet than deal with your dirty, unsafe conditions and poor customer service. P.S. You may want to shut down your elevators and lock your front doors if your lobby is "closed after 10PM." Just an idea. read more

Love the Redline. I lived in LA for a number of years - hated the traffic - and so eventually located myself in Koreatown so as to live right at a great Metro intersection. I LOVE Metro. Its inexpensive; its reliable; I have (almost) always felt safe. Best of all - it will take you to all the coolest neighborhoods in LA (if one line doesn't go there, it intersects with another that does - or will soon). For now, if you can get on a train, you can get to Downtown LA, MacArthur Park, Koreatown, East Hollywood, Hollywood, Studio City, North Hollywood, Culver City, USC, Long Beach, South LA, Pasadena, Highland Park, Asuza, East LA, the South Bay, Norwalk, etc. And soon - Santa Monica, West LA, LAX, the Miracle Mile, Westwood, and Inglewood. LA has the best best walking/biking weather in the USA - take advantage of that by using Metro - plus, you get to skip GAS PRICES, PARKING FEES, and TRAFFIC. read more
