I took the Metro Green Line via Redondo Beach and the South Bay beach cities and connected to the BLUE LINE. The Blue Line is where the urban concrete jungle begins, so it is a bit more sketchy based on the socio-economic make up of the neighborhoods this line passes through... yes, it's in part a stereotype, but in truth, stereotypes are based somewhat on trends or reality, not necessarily rules of course nor absolutes... so practice educated odds-making, and just be respectful and cautious. I've never seen any incidents, nor have I seen any security nor police paroling either. I think they need more obvious (not undercover) security to keep everyone in check. Some of the people on the Blue Line at times looks guilty of something, so try not to stare and just mind your own business. Don't take out your fancy expensive stuff like your cell phone or anything that can get snatched or taken away. It's like being around wild animals, if you show fear, they can sense it. Same here, if you look like a victim, you'll become one. I'd probably say travel with someone and don't use it early morning or late at night, so in other words only during daylight hours where it seems safe. I did encounter overhearing one funny conversation where 2 urban guys got on board and were talking to each other, one criticizing the other in friendly jest over his poor eating habits, then somewhere in the conversation it was said... "Crepes! That's French for Pancakes, N'ga!" (he had the birthright to say that last word as he was Black) During that same ride, a homeless woman smelling like a rancid walking bathroom stall was walking around panhandling for money, then settled down and sat next to a lady, who then the lady got up angry moved back and said (talking to herself) "Damn, they shouldn't allow this here, she's got mental problems. I have mental problems too, but I don't do that." Sometimes you can smell the weed in the clothes of the patrons, but it's a better fragrance than either B.O. or urine, so I'd take sweet MJ every and any day over any other odor. So, in fact the "BLUE LINE" should actually be re-named "THE GREEN LINE" for the marijuana aroma that permeates the route. :) It's still a reliable mode of transportation, maybe not during certain parts of the day, but when passing through, it's convenient and affordable. You save on gas and parking too. The MTA system and the fees for riding and transferring is still very cryptic, and I'd wish it took a page from the Nor Cal / SF Bay Area's BART system where you can see the price from where you are to where you want to be, quite easily without confusion. This is a good way to get to Staples Center / LA Live and The Los Angeles Convention Center (get off at the PICO EXIT). You can also go downtown and Chinatown as well, but transfer from the Blue Line to the RED LINE if you're headed to Union Station, the end of the line.

I got into a tiff over a casual remark between Expo vs Blue, so it's about time that I wrote up some proper thoughts on it. I've ridden all the lines except Gold. And Blue is the one you should avoid at all costs. Reliability: There's always delays due to various problems. Most of the time it's in the DTLA area. They even offer a "late to class/work" note for students or hourly workers. That's how chronic the issue is! Regular riders should be following @metrolaalerts and @metrolosangeles. Speed: It's very slow. Thru DTLA it has to snake through congested roads and various lights. And even once out of DTLA - it doesn't improve much. If it wasn't for the extended connection waiting time for Green and Silver (bus) lines, transferring over to those would be a better & faster option. Comfort & Safety: During the past winter's cold & flu season, I never got ill riding metro until I rode the Blue. Yep sitting in my seat, listening to people in front and behind me hacking nonstop for 1 hour without covering their mouths. Sure enough, I got very sick a few days later. Bring a travel mask for your commute. I rode it another time - and had to endure some vile profanity laced rap noise. And I'm a Too $hort, NWA, and 2 Live Crew fan. Bring your own headphones but... Make sure they're cheap disposable ones! A lot of reviews here mention getting your mobile gear stolen riding this line. UPDATE: just read from news someone's stuff was stolen out of his bag while he was sleeping on the train. Lame. Drunk on cheap beer passengers. Beggars and vendors harassing you. So damn surreal. And watching that video of a girl kick another rude drunk rider senseless... pure class! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2vhLbeAUAM Final ITYS: Blue 2.5 vs Expo 3.5 stars - trust the negative reviews here.

I've been commuting on the Blue Line from Long Beach to Downtown LA - the entire length of the route - for several months, so I thought I'd share my experiences in the hope it might help others. Now, please take into consideration that this is coming from a 30 year old middle class white guy who doesn't have a lot of experience in the "rough" neighborhoods. When taking the Blue Line, and probably any public transportation in LA for that matter, one of the first things that you will notice is that nearly every person on the train is primarily hispanic, or to a lesser degree, black. Spanish is the primary language on the train. Sometimes I will be the only white person for as far as I can see. Now, is that a problem? Not really, but it's something to think about if you aren't familiar with that kind of situation. Taking the train during the morning commute hours is fine for the most part, usually just working class hispanics going to work. However, taking the train back is typically more eventful. I commonly see gangsters, homeless people, people blasting rap music, etc. Usually the sketchy people don't really bother me all that often, but I've gotten into a few skirmishes during my time - arguments with people, people yelling at me/wanting to fight for no reason etc. The most frightening experience was when I witnessed an argument between two people on the train, and then a third guy WHIPPED OUT A HANDGUN, offering it to one of the guys having the argument, suggesting that he "smoke the guy's ass". After seeing that, I promptly got off the train at the next stop! The two stops that I use, Metro/7th St Station and Long Beach Transit Mall both seem safe for the most part, but that can't really be said for many of the stops along the line. I once had to get off at the Anaheim Street station and felt like I was going to be attacked by a bum. Overall, the metro can be safe if you stay alert of your surroundings and use common sense. I would definitely feel safer driving and not having to deal with some of the scum you will see, but that isn't an option at the moment, so I will try to stay safe on the Blue Line. Good luck and stay safe!

It is an elevated station, with elevators and escalators (when operational) taking one to street level. Because this area is hilly, one can also stop before fully going down, and instead go through Blossom Plaza to the northwest, exiting onto Broadway. It's the first stop going north from Union Station and actually is walkable from there as well. Did make a request Yelp to change the incorrect name (since the Gold Line still exists but no longer stops at this station)... hoping action would be taken to correct.

Yeah, I know they have salmonella, but they're so cute. Mrs. Picante and I ran the Firecracker 10K this year, and while the t-shirt, logo, and medal were dumb, the morning was breathtakingly beautiful. We boarded the train in Arcadia, and within 35 minutes, we were getting off at the Chinatown station for our 8:45 start time. Can't beat the convenience, and the Sunday morning ride was 98.7% hobo free. After the race, we wandered around a little and looked at stuff-- even walked down that narrow alley of shops that is in every cops n robbers movie featuring Chinatown. For $1.75, this is really convenient, and for those of you that go a little heavy on the Tsing Tao, this is a great way to keep yourself and other safe.

I remember being a kid and seeing the Blue/A line be formed and eventually the Green/C line near our first home in South LA off Central Avenue/118th Place... Eventually riding with our aunts and dad on occasion to different places. Metro fare is currently $1.75 with transfers available in various directions and discounts available for students, children and seniors. In addition there is a max cap of no more than $5 per day and various monthly, weekly or even day passes and caps you can acquire or have access to. Metro makes improvement where it can and since the pandemic has been climbing over hurdles to improve cleaner, safer and more efficient rides. It's not perfect by any means as for certain stops it's required to tap to exit to reduce on riders who don't tap, but the thing is sometimes cards get dropped and misplaced, while digital tap cards have made life easier in terms of keeping up with them, sometimes the tap reader doesn't pick it up right away. Just the other week I gave using my digital card a little more love and it only worked instantly once! Other attempts took three or more tries. Tapping to exit at the end of a long day or commute feels criminal as you're just hoping to make it home at that point. During the day time at peaks hours you're more likely to see more metro staff, security and officers on duty, usually between 8am to 5pm, but strides have been made to extend presences, especially in light of an altercation taking part last week between two men that led to a near fatal stabbing 15 to 20 feet directly behind me. This is not a typical LA Metro ride or riding experience. Very surreal to hear two adult men argue to the point of lethal violence and have to evacuate to the next train cart for my safety, but also making sure all passengers on our side got through that door before we closed it tight and hold it close until we could get to the next available stop. I'm beyond glad nobody else was hurt, all passengers worked together, and the victim got medical care. The one who drew the weapon and escalated the altercation between the two men unfortunately got away, was hurt as well, maced and dripping small amounts of blood from the metro cart up the escalator and all the way out of the station. His face was covered in a hoodie and he was never tracked down or caught as of almost a full week ago. I've seen a lot via metro, but rarely does it escalate to this point. Typically you may experience some odd characters, the sock guy, people selling what they can to earn extra money (from snacks to jewelry), performers, an interesting rant or three, tap card inspections (which slow people down from where they need to go - like jobs or appointments), etc. Metro busses fluctuate with accuracy either arriving to early or very late, sometimes not at all for the less frequented routes, but sometimes there's zero issues at all, even friendly drivers who offer a free ride for the day or part of the day, smooth wi-fi (which is now also available on a lot of the rails), usb outlets for charging under seats on the nearer busses + all entrance taps to cut down on boarding. Cool things like Metro Rider Appreciation Day, Earth Day or Voting Day riders ride free - though they often forget to make this work at all stations, but do a pretty 8/10 job with the Metro busses. They pop up at conventions, festivals and community celebrations including Latin Heritage Month, Pride Month, LA Comic Con and numerous others, sharing information, free tap cards, swag and more. New rail lines are being extended including a station for LAX, additional rail line in the San Fernando Valley, line extensions throughout and more safety. I'm not afraid to ride metro, and don't think anyone should be - but we should all be mindful, aware and considerate. LA Metro can definitely do better, but as the riders of Metro Los Angeles, so can we.

First time and it was a little intimidating. I like to know what to do and how to get about with it. Picture me, someone who has never been inside trying to find their way around dragging a suitcase.... lol... I had a connection coming from Palm Springs which lead me to here. It's quite big and the whole Amtrak, Surfliner to metro was a learner for me. First off, I never knew that you could actually take public transportation from the city to the desert. I had a connection ended at Union which was pretty easy to get around. It's a pretty big station but plenty of signs to get you where you need to be. Plus with the metro, it's pretty self explanatory with the colors for the train. There's construction going on in the tunnel which wasn't much of a factor as we got to where we needed to be. Also, I didn't expect loads of food stalls available. I guess you have to feed people while they're waiting. I believe the main tunnel area was where all the trains, ie Amtrak and Surfliners come in while the another is where all the Metros are. There was plenty of staff on hand with questions if needed. I did both arrival and departure on the same day to test out the whole process. It was quite simple. Even if you arrive early, your train can already be docked and waiting till departure. Make sure to look on the board for which gate you suppose to be at. It's a big station but pretty simple once you get the hang of it.

Parking is affordable, but can get fisted and it's nice that they have the free Dodger Express Shuttle. But the restrooms are abysmal, especially for the women's restroom and the men's isn't any cleaner (according to friends' first hand accounts) and there's always litter somewhere and the subtle scent of human waste, but that's the DTLA experience if anything. That's why when I was told we were going to go to Union Station for dinner (when I was in Denver), I was aghast. Completely different expectations and execution. Union Station does its job, could always be a bit better, it's just that society needs to get to that point and we need to be a bit less of a car driven (haha) ecosystem where public transit is more friendlier and easier to use.
