I tried the Barda torta, which was good but had too much ham. The choripan torta had too much of the meat. The chorizo tasted more like sausage. I was pleased to arrive at Las Tortas for the "Barda" combo, which included a fresh side salad topped with light cilantro/cheese dressing. As it was my first visit, I suggested my friends order for me so I could soak in the moment. As we were all served the same thing, the cute side salad arrived first with the mandarin orange inside it. Topped with a light cilantro dressing, it first appeared to me as prepared with a high art salad style I had been drilled with in culinary school. I blinked for a moment. Okay, maybe not...but I thought to order the large one next time because it was delicious and I could have eaten 5 servings alone... When the torta arrived looking like a little pink ghost, I laughed at the presentation of the deli ham covering the bread, but it was very good in the context of of the plate. I moved slowly through it between sips of the cold, tangy Jamaica tea until everything was done. I was impressed. For a quick lunch/break stop, I am looking forward to putting this one on my map of McAllen, Texas, and returning often to try other menu listings. We were driving by this spot on our way to get deli sandwiches when I decided to look up their menu. The good reviews and the very modest prices convinced us to stop and give them a try. The place is tiny with about 6 inside dining tables and maybe about 2 outside tables. You order at a small counter and can see your food being made. We ordered a Portuguese and the pierna and ternera (pulled pork & shredded beef). The pulled pork and beef was phenomenal! Like surprisingly good! The bread is soft and chewy with a perfectly hard crust that is toasted just a tad. The meats inside were full of flavor and the pork rinds added just the right crunch necessary in every perfect sandwich. The Portuguese with Milanesa and black beans was also super tasty although very overshadowed by the previously described sandwich. Both rocked though! Definitely worth a stop or drive if in the mood for some delicious and cheap tortas. $20 will feed 2 people here. read more

Overall great food and quick service when I went around 3pm on a weekday. I used the drive thru and since it was my first time I had them choose, I was not disappointed. This place is open during the day through this coronavirus thing. My boyfriend was always trying to make me come here but I never wanted to come.... such a big mistake. This place is amazing for lunch for a couple of reasons. 1. price is very reasonable, and you get so much for what you pay for. I got a chicken plate and it came salad and soup, for around 8 bucks I got so much variety and food! 2. They have super good horchata and it comes with the combo 3. The meat in their sandwiches is generous, they don't skimp on it. (I forgot to take a picture sorry!) 4. You don't get a sad salad, they put orange in it, and fancy lettuce! No, a torta is not just a sandwich, it's made with flavorful ingredients, delicious meats and the bread has to be the perfect bolillo (french bread). This small, corner in a strip center delivers some delicious tortas, soups and salads. Torta combo comes with your torta, salad or soup and a drink. They're soups are always so flavorful and bold (even the not so typical chicken noodle) which is what I had on Thursday. The soups change daily so you can mix up your order. If you're a cilantro lover, you cannot skip out on their cilantro salad of mixed greens piled high with tangerine slices, almonds and their homemade creamy cilantro dressing. I've tried a couple of the tortas but from their Mexican, Argentinean and Vegetarian menus, my favorites are the Milanesa (french bread, milanesa [I switch the beef with chicken], black beans, avocado, cream, red onions and I add queso fresco). The traditional De La Barda (french bread, black beans, ham, veal, queso fresco, mexican chorizo, onion, tomato & avocado) is also tasty! Make sure to try their hot sauces laid out on the table and if you can really handle the heat, ask for the chicharron green sauce! Tried to call-in my order and no one answered the phone, so I went in person and needless to say the phone was ringing off the wall and no one answers , they just let it ring! Great little Mexican restaurant with amazing tortas. Ive tried their Cubana, Italiana, and La Portuguesa. I usually always get the combo with their salad which has such a delicious cilantro dressing, like for real you'll want to out this dressing on everything. They use pan francés (French bread) and it's very fresh, and have the best jamaica. This last visit I decided to switch it up and ordered the Ternera y Pierna torta with the soup of the day which was the Sopa de calabaza (zucchini soup), and Horchata. I'm not a fan of Horchata because it's usually overwhelmingly sugary, but holy cow this was delicious it was like the perfect level of sweetness but great paired with the torta and soup. The soup was really flavorful but I would have hoped for it to be less runny. I prefer the consistency of the zucchini soup from Siempre Natural but Las Tortas wins by a long shot in the flavor category. NOW the main event! The TORTA! The Ternera y Pierna is definitely a MUST try. It's shredded beef, pulled pork, chicharrón (pork rinds), tomato, onion, sour cream, and avocado, topped with dressing. I added their green salsa to the torta for the perfect flavor explosion. The staff and owners are all great people and do a great job at making sure the place is clean and check up on you regularly. Place looks clean, good temperature and Tortas are good. Today it was my second visit, I ordered a Choripán, which is made with argentinian sausage, avocado and chimichurri sauce. I noticed that it had no chimichurri sauce, I opened the sandwhich to verify and no chimichurri. I asked the waitress for it and she said that they add it to the sausage when cooking it. Believe me, I know what chimichurri is and how it tastes and looks like. The yellow plastic cup of vegetable soup had a grayish rim. I though it might be from the soup, I tried to scrape it with the spoon it did not come out, I even used my fingernail, nothing. I think that some bleach could help the clean their soup bowls.
