The last thing I expected to find in Brighton was a torta, let alone a great one. The business has been open for a few months now, but I only got around to trying it the other day. Though I only had the Detox juice (freshly juiced carrots, ginger and apples) and a torta milanesa, this shop might be my new favorite place in Brighton. A torta is a Mexican sandwich. Made on a flat white bun, the fillings are normally a smear of refried beans, fresh guacamole, lettuce, cheese and some sort of meat, and served toasted. In this case, I got chicken milanesa, which is basically just breaded, seasoned chicken that's cut up. There are a variety of salsas you can add, ranging from mild to actually really, really hot, which is so refreshing to find! On the menu, they also have burritos, grilled bread with beans and meat on top, called molletes (pronounced mo-yet-ehs), fried tacos and lots of different juice options. I'm from Los Angeles, and with half my family in Mexico, I've eaten a ton of Mexican food in my day. The torta I had at Las Tortas took me right back to Mexico, probably because the family who runs it is from Mexico City. I can't wait to try the other things on the menu. I'm giving the place 5 stars, because trust me, this IS as good as this type of 'street food' is going to get 5000 miles from Mexico. It's not haute cuisine, just simple, good, quick eats. I really hope this business succeeds so it can be my food-home away from home! read more
