Solid overall - sat out in the patio for dinner. Complimentary chips and salsa included. I also…read moreasked for a spicy salsa and they brought out an awesome habanero salsa. Good beer selection. For starters we ordered the queso which was good but mainly felt like basic yellow nacho cheese with salsa in it. For dinner my wife had the tostadas which she enjoyed and I had the chicken chimichanga which was super tasty and crispy! Service was good too...Would go back again

Came to Tamales in Highland Park and left regretting every bite. The place is stuck in a time…read morewarp--tables so sticky I had to peel my elbows off just to pay the bill. I can only imagine what shape the kitchen is in; if the dining room is this neglected, the back-of-house probably violates health codes in three languages. It desperately needs a refresh, like yesterday. Ordered the steak fajitas thinking it'd be a safe bet. Nope. Overpriced compared to literally any other spot in the neighborhood, and they *force* you to get rice and beans whether you want them or not--like a culinary hostage situation. The steak was a tiny, unseasoned sliver you could floss with, the veggies were bland, limp, and clearly steamed into submission hours earlier, and the whole plate felt like an afterthought--nothing to write home about. The rice? A pathetic dry little scoop served in a tiny little bowl so unappetizing I didn't even touch it. But the real kicker? The menu still brags that toppings (lettuce, sour cream, cheese, guac) are *included*, yet the server mumbled something about "they changed how it's priced" and slapped an extra $7 charge on the bill for stuff that comes standard with fajitas at every other Mexican restaurant. Sneaky, frustrating, and borderline bait-and-switch. Save your money and walk five minutes down the street to **La Casa de Isaac**--better food, better pricing, and a vibe that doesn't make you want to sanitize your hands every 30 seconds. This place? Hard pass. Don't waste your time or money.

I visited here on a recent Friday with a group of almost a dozen and had a great time. We had a…read morelarge table (not sure is someone reserved it or not) looking right out onto Roger Williams ave. We had plenty of room and it was nice to have delicious beer, good food, and a pleasant view of this part of Highland Park. I've been here before when it had a different name, but it seems like little has changed. This is a well warn bar! Comfy seats at the bar and a smattering of booths and table with a homey feel - lots of wood and available light from the large front window. This is not a huge room by any means but it never felt crowded. Our group had mostly apps like guac and chips and a quesadilla or two. I tried a Kolsch lager and a Marzen lager both if which were a little cheaper than usual due to the Happy Hour Special of $5 a beer. Margaritas are $6 at Happy Hour. The beer was very good! We had a great waiter and being seated just a few feet from the bar meant no one went thirsty or hungry for long. On past visits I was seated on the back patio but we had rain on this most recent visit, and it's also March! (Patio season does not start in the Chicago area for at least another month or month and a half!) The patio is a nice little wood fenced in area with lots of tables and a back tap bar. Not sure if that set-up is still the same.... This is a great local bar with a lot of rustic, homey charm. I'd definitely recommend if you want good local beer in a friendly old-school bar.

We love how cozy it felt & it was super clean! The service here was awesome & so was the…read morefood/drinks! If we find ourselves in Highland Park again, especially in the nicer weather we will be stopping by. They have a section in the back that we want to check out.
