After a half marathon I generally need two things- 1. A shower and 2. A tasty meal to replace some of the calories that were burnt off. Since we were in Newcastle option 1 wasn't an option as there are no showers in the train station (although could be a brilliant idea if they added them!) but option 2 most definitely still was. After some searching on Yelp we saw that Las Iguanas was a short walk away and I decided Mexican was my meal of choice.
The restaurant is fairly large- they had a good number of tables set up outside and loads of space inside. I wasn't surprised to see that while they were t super busy the majority of other customers were also supporting great north run medals and running kit. We were shown a table by a super friendly waiter and given the lunch/early evening menu to chose from. The menu has loads of options although a bit smaller than the main menu but for a fraction of the price. Also the waiter told is it was 2for1 cocktails since we had arrived during happy hour.
After ordering two cocktails, staters and mains we only had a short wait for our drinks to arrive followed by starters. I had the nachos which were a scaled down size version of the sharing size on the main menu. They were super tasty loads with cheese, guacamole, salsa, and sour cream and still a really good size. My boyfriend had the garlic mushroom quesadilla that was also nice. For mains I got the veggie enchilada which was huge! My enchilada stretched the length of my oval plate sat on top of rice and retried black beans. I'm not sure if it was my absolute starving hunger but the enchilada was amazing delicious. I managed the whole plate and finished it off with the rest of my cocktail. We were offered dessert but passed as we were both stuffed.
The meal in total came to under £30 which is great value and definitely made me note to head to the Edinburgh branch next time I was in need for a filling but cheap lunch. Having been properly fed we wandered back to the train station to get our train back home. An end note goes to the waiter who was always super friendly and attentive and had the pleasantness to ask me how I got on in the half marathon after congratulating me. read more
