Oh yum. Food was so amazingly good I'd bump this review to 6 stars if I could. The entomatadas (aka, slow cooked chicken enchiladas with roasted poblanos, served with rice and beans) were hands down some of the best Mexican food I've had. The guacamole was also delicious and fillinggg which is why I had to take home some leftovers, but everything was so tasty I was not mad. The guac was perfectly salty, limey, made homestyle and definitely had some Serrano or spicy action going on. The enchilada sauce was so bright and tomatoey, with a little kick, the filling of the enchiladas was fantastic and you can tell the tortillas were nice and homemade. Frozen margaritas were yummy but on the smaller side. The decor inside is very nice with lots of flowers and plants, and romantic lighting. Our server was super chill and the manager of the restaurant stopped by our table at the end to ask about our experience, she was so kind and I was so happy to tell her how much I loved this place! We aren't locals but I'd come again and again any time I find myself in town. read more

This restaurant definitely needs to get more hype or marketing because let me tell you..this was the best margarita I've had in the entire Milwaukee area and I may simply be the pickiest margarita drinker known to man. It was PERFECT. Not to mention the bartender Jason was a cool ass easy going dude and let me try one of his cocktails of the week he had created that shift - which was also bomb. We stopped by this amazing restaurant the first week of October on a Wednesday. Of course we made reservations for 6:00pm and arrived on time. We were seated immediately and given menus to look over. The restaurant was not too busy at the time and if I recall correctly there were maybe 3 other parties already seated upon our arrival. The menu itself was not particularly what I would describe as expansive but definitely had a good variety of appetizers and entrees to select from. We were actually here for my wife's birthday so yes it was a special occasion. We decided to go with the bone marrow as an appetizer (it was not on the menu but you could request it). It was a nice and lite yet flavorful start to our meal. The wife chose to go with the carne asada plate which by the way is loaded with food and I went with the chicken enchiladas in a green salsa. Both plates were not only appealing to the eye but we found both dishes to be quite delicious with several flavors complementing each other and leaving us very satisfied as far as taste and quantity. The service by our server was very good and he was very attentive to our needs with the ambiance being intimate and relaxed which made for a most enjoyable dinner date. Afterwards, our server brought out a piece of tres leches cake for my wife's birthday which was greatly appreciated. Once the bill came we were pleasantly surprised to see that for the quality of service and food it was very agreeable. As we were finishing up our meal, the owner of the restaurant came to ask how everything was and introduced herself. I complemented her on the food but especially her mole sauce which she stated is made in house from a family receipe from Guadalajara Mexico. Overall it was a wonderful meal and a memorable night thanks to the entire staff of Las Gardenias. If you are in Milwaukee anytime soon and would like to try some Mexican food that is different than your average tacos or burritos and is loaded with flavor and looks amazing as well, I would highly recommend you stop by Las Gardenias. I came here with friends who are regulars. The owner and staff were super friendly. The food was amazing. I got the carne asada. It was a lot of food, and there was a great variety. One of my favorite Mexican sauces is mole which i am used to having with chicken. The carne asada plate came with enamoladas, 2 cheese enchiladas with mole. These were amazing, and i would totally get a dinner of this. I'm not a fan of chicken enchiladas. I live cheese enchiladas. So this was perfect. The steak was cooked perfectly. Really nice location. Very easy to get to. We were seated promptly for being a group of nine. The guacamole was delicious. I think my only complaint was the drinks. The sangria was so strong, my friend couldn't drink it. Someone else order a different drink that she struggled to drink because it was over powering on the alcohol. The food was good over all. Had a great experience dining in at Las Gardenias. It is an upscale and intimate restaurant with delicious authentic Mexican cuisine . The staff was very kind and attentive, which we appreciated. My passionfruit cocktail was really good and I love that they serve chips&salsa to start. I tried two different tacos off the à la carte menu in addition to a side of rice. This spot is so amazing, such a cozy and romantic vibe. Parking is not fun, though. The food is delicious, I don't think I've ever had a homemade corn tortilla this good. The frozen house marg was good, very strong. I love how they have THC drinks. The bistec and la costra tacos were HEAVENLY. The Mexican rice was also very good. I've been wanting to try this restaurant for weeks, I called and they had same day availability. It's more of a Fine Mexican restaurant with great staff and wonderful ambiance. We tried this New Mexican restaurant located next to Aperitivo today just to check it out and the food was quite flavorful. We began with the chips and salsa (on the house - yay!) which was delicious and tried the 3 taco plate which hit the spot. My only "complaint" is that there isn't much of a variety of vegetarian appetizers or entrees. Otherwise, good, tasty food and a cocktail menu to try next time we stop by. A bit pricey, but not exorbitant. There's a small and cozy patio on the south-facing area of the building, which should be nice for an evening meal and/or drinks. Attentive service too. read more

We were excited to try this new restaurant just blocks from the public market. It's nicely decorated inside and cute in the patio area. I might have not seen it, but they should really have a sign letting guests know it is extremely loud and screechy outside when a train goes by. I wouldn't recommend eating outside if the train track screeching noise bothers you. The service was slower and you can tell they are newer but they were friendly. The tacos were so delicious and bigger than expected, definitely worth it! The enchilada was okay, lacking some flavors. If I go back, I would get the tacos again for sure. Pati and Richard have a true gem here. They are the owners of Apretivo next door and decided to make an upscale Mexican restaurant as the neighboring sister space next door. The space is beautiful and has a great patio area outside. They have a vast variety of great tequilas, one of the more extensive selection that I've seen in the city. They do right by both their aguachile plates. I have not had a similar aguachile plate anywhere else. Its fresh, raw, and spicy. The staff is extremely friendly and very attentive. Our first time visiting Gardenias on Plankinton. The setting and ambiance are truly inviting. Classy yet comfortable. We met the owner - Patricia who is a total delight. She told us the recipes for her dishes come from her Mother. Our choices were prepared perfectly, bursting in flavor and held true to her Mother's vision. Our server - Joshua was a hoot and very efficient. At one point, I dropped some Mole Sauce on my beige sweater and he came running with a fluffy white towel and club soda. Really loved our whole experience here! First and foremost, the food is excellent. The menu is unique and elevated compared to other Mexican restaurants in the area (not a knock on them...I love all Mexican food!), and had several dishes I hadn't seen elsewhere. Chips, salsa, guacamole, entrees (enchiladas and carne asada), everything was top notch, had complex flavor profiles, and was portioned and plated perfectly. Absolutely love it, the drinks are very inventive, and also quite delicious. Try the El Elote it's an absolutely wonderful cocktail with complex, but approachable flavors. To start I usually go with the choriqueso; which is one of the best things I've ever dipped a tortilla in, or the tuetano y salsa de molcajete which is so rich and flavorful. For an entree the tamales verdes con pollo are my go to; unless I'm in the mood for tacos and then I'm just getting three camarones al achiote that sikil p'aak salsa packs the perfect punch to complement the shrimp. Oh and check out the salsa flight it'll be worth it. Everything is made fresh and packed with flavor. If you're looking for an upscale vibe with traditional flavors, this is an absolute must try. You will be in for a treat at Las Gardinias! Owner, Patricia, brings her family recipes to Milwaukee from her native Guadalajara and they are as authentic as they are delicious. I ordered the Chilito de Puerco--bone-in pork chops, slowly cooked in a tomato and chile sauce until the meat fell off the bones. Patricia explained that this dish was prepared by her grandmother for the family dinner each Sunday. Even the simple corn tortillas, hand made from the finest ingredients, were the best I have ever had. I had a mezcal margarita, but I took note of the variety of excellent and well curated tequilas and mezcals, unique cocktails, Mexican made spirits and beer at the bar.
