If you want old world craftmanship and old school service, call Mike Shannon at East Meadow…read moreUpholsters. My old dining room chairs (circa 1990s) were in bad shape with a few rips and flattened seats. I really noticed these issues after using the chairs for long periods of time during dragged-out Zoom meetings. At first I thought of replacing them, but only found cheaply made imported chairs that were not to my taste. Besides I always prefer to refurbish my vintage stuff rather than replace it if I can. In addition to their excellent reviews, I remembered that East Meadow Upholsters had done work for my Mom many years ago and she was very happy with them. So I filled out a short online form on their website and attached pics of my old chairs; Mike replied with a reasonable quote the same day. I opted to get my own material and Mike picked up my chairs a few days later with a promised finish date of 2 weeks. So I was pleasantly surprised when Mike finished the job in about a week! My chairs look brand new with nice firm cushions. Very good experience with East Meadow Upholsterers.

BEWARE. I contacted this company for a new slipcover for my 90" sofa (with one long bench cushion)…read moreand provided the dimensions and details upfront. They gave me a written estimate of $225-$475. Based on that estimate, I paid $50 for an in-home consultation. The person they sent was a super nice, dog loving guy, but I'm honestly not sure why he came as he didn't even take measurements and we spent the entire time chatting about dogs. Their final quote? $2,600 PLUS fabric: $2,200 for the slipcover and $400 for pickup/delivery. No other professional I contacted said the sofa needed to leave my home. It's a slipcover. While he was here, I also asked for an estimate to replace a tiny 8.5" x 1.2" strip of veneer missing from one small leg of a standard teak console. Again, no measurements. Their quote was $560-$640 PLUS $450 pickup/delivery - potentially $1,090 for one tiny strip of veneer. The same thing happened to the other side of this console a couple of years ago, and I had it professionally repaired for $150. The repair person simply brought the repaired panel back. There was no need to haul away the entire console. For the sofa, I've received quotes of approximately $675 and $875 plus fabric elsewhere. Even Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, a luxury furniture company, quoted approximately $1,440 INCLUDING Sunbrella fabric. And here's the best part: this company actually told me to ask ChatGPT and I'd see that their pricing was fair. So I did. I gave ChatGPT the sofa measurements and the specific sofa, which it found online. Its assessment? Their price was extraordinarily high for a replacement slipcover. So, thanks for the suggestion! If your prices are that high, be transparent about them upfront. Don't give potential customers a $225-$475 range and then charge them $50 to discover the real number. Save your $50 and get estimates elsewhere. I even posted pictures of the furniture so you could see for yourself.

Not only were Jack and Patricio extremely helpful in sending me initial quotes and pictures of fabric samples, I was delighted that they are a local business right in my neighborhood - meaning I was able to go to their workshop the next day and look at fabric that they had available. (They have a huge range of beautiful fabrics that they can order, but given my rush, I decided that I wanted to go with what they had, especially since I had very simple needs in this case.) After I took my swatches and made my choice a few hours later, they came to pick up the chairs the same day and got them done beautifully and elegantly, well ahead of the deadline that I had requested. I am so happy with my chairs, which refresh the look of my entire kitchen/dining area. And I will definitely be working with HC Reup Design again soon, as I have another project coming up!
