Brought my car in for a smog check without an appointment. Got there around 8:30 am on a Monday. I was told there were customers ahead of me that had smog check appointments, but I was told they'd be able to get to my car around 10:30 am that day. Hours go by and I hadn't heard anything so I called at about 3:00 pm. I was told my car hadn't been smogged because their machine went down. They said they had called everyone waiting for a smog to let them know, but they had overlooked my number and accidentally failed to call me. They said their smog machine would be up and working the next day around 1:00 pm. I was told my car would be first in line as everyone else cancelled. I decided to leave my car with them. The next day I call at about 2:45 pm to see if the smog had been done. I was told no, they said the machine still wasn't working but they believed it would be the following day. I decided to take my car back without getting the smog check done. While I understand machines break, failing to call me two days in a row to let me know my car isn't being worked on is just poor customer service. read more

I mostly go here for smog checks and it's always been a nice experience. I make an appointment online and I'm usually out within 30 minutes. I've checked around town and they have very competitive if not the best prices around for smog. If I need non-brand specific repairs, I'd look here as well. Wonderful experience at Larry's yesterday when my car suddenly developed a horrible noise in the late afternoon. Though it was shortly before closing, they let me drop in, and they did a very thorough inspection and reviewed the findings with me in detail. Though the car will need a definitive fix soon I was able to leave knowing what's wrong and reassured that I could get home (60 miles away) safely--which I did. Everyone I dealt with was friendly and collaborative, in a regular kind of way. And to top it off, the charge was much less than i thought it might be. Like I say, a great experience. read more

I highly recommend these guys. I am from the area but moved away, was visiting and needed help with a 'no crank - no start' issue. They had me in the next morning, and figured out the problem in less than an hour. The diagnosis was reasonably priced and Donald (the owner) was informative with some other issues and tips, and didn't balk at me letting him know all the things I tried that didn't find the problem. My truck is reliably on the road now. I can't speak for every auto issue but with my diesel with a finicky electrical issue, he figured it out with ease. read more

Quick, easy and competent service! I got some tires shipped from tire rack, and set up an appointment with the very friendly lady at the front desk (Ursula?). Then a day later I remembered I had to do a smog and they squeezed that in for me too! It was their smog guy's last day, call and check to see if they do smog before you go.They did five tires and a smog in a couple hours and gave me a call when it was done. Easy peasy! Their lot gets a little tight, so maybe go for the early morning appointments. They moved my car around for me while I paid for everything so it wasn't hard getting out. read more

They sat on my car for 2 days without giving me an update, and when I called them up they told me the mechanic 'was having trouble' and COULD NOT COMPLETE THE REPAIR. This was for a simple brake job on a dime-a-dozen car that was made forever. Are you f'in kidding me? Their sister shop next door wouldn't give me the time of day when I asked them if they could handle it. Was the car in question was too ugly for them...? Guy Wingo was the best car mechanic we have ever had. He started fixing our cars 33 years ago, when he worked at the garage at Larry's Shell Station, and we followed him to his shop on Scotts Valley Drive. So sorry to see his obit in the paper this week (August 2020). His repair quotes were always fair, and he never charged more than quoted. If the repair was easier than he expected, he would reduce the price. The repairs were done correctly, and the cars ran great afterward. Last year one of our cars was in a collision, and needed to be towed. When the tow truck driver asked where we wanted it to go, we said, "To Guy, at Larry's Auto Care." The driver said Guy was the mechanic that all the tow truck drivers respected the most. On several occasions, we brought in a car to change the windshield wipers or fix a burned out headlight, and he would kindly do the work for free. Guy was courteous and professional. My 17 year old daughter's car was having problems. She took it to a mechanic that charged her $250 to tell her it had a cracked cylinder and was unsafe to drive. She called me crying believing her Mazda with 70k miles on it was not fixable. I called Anthony who is Larry's son and he refused to believe the cylinder was cracked. We brought it to him for a 2nd opinion and he found NO crack in the cylinder. He found a leak that was over the spark plugs causing the car to misfire and idle rough. He literally saved us $20k from buying a new car. We also told Anthony about the broken AC that another shop told us was not worth fixing because it would take a lot of work and they couldn't guarantee that they could fix. Well Anthony repaired the AC! I was blown away (no pun intended) the AC works just like the car, everything in LIKE NEW condition. I cannot thank Larry's automotive enough! Anthony is the best mechanic I have ever met. My daughter is moving far away to attend college in a few months and she now has a safe reliable car to drive! read more

I was concerned that they would argue or push back or not take responsibility because, well, that's what you might expect from an auto mechanic. Not these folks though. Review: A very honest place, 100% recommended. Story: On our way to Santa Cruz when suddenly, the car starts overheating. We pull over in Scott's valley, and the car starts to smoke. This is saturday at 5:30pm. What mechanics place is open? We aren't from around here! We find a repair shop thats closed but Eric(i think thats his name) was kind enough to take a look at it. He diagnosed the problem and because his driver wasn't working at the moment, he ran around to two close gas stations and found something that would make the van work temporarily so we were able to drive home instead of us having to call someone and tow it all the way home. He only charged us for the item that he bought, which was $3. We obviously gave him more for his time and how great he treated us. If you think there are no honest mechanics left out there, come here next time and see for yourself. What an awesome guy! We made it all the way home. Thanks Eric! read more

I've taken 2 of our cars here for smog check, and they were great. Specifically Ben was great. Super nice and easy to work with. However, I sent my best friend there and what a horrible experience! The older guy with gray here was super rude to her and her girlfriend, but not only that, took total and complete advantage of them. Not having a ton of experience in this area, they agreed to a $100 fee to diagnose the check engine light. That seemed really steep to them, but they were assured that it was fair. Granted, it was their mistake to not do more research beforehand, but because I had recommended them, they didn't think that they'd be ripped off by this place. The gray haired mechanic called back to say my friend needed her brakes replaced and something else, and she agrees to get the brakes replaced but the other work she holds off on because the part was still under warranty from a previous auto mechanic. She asks how much it is, and he tells her the price, and tells her she also needs to pay the $100 fee just to tell her what the problem was. I called a couple other mechanics in the area and they all said that they typically waive the fee when you get work done with them, and that $100 is really high in general just to have a check engine light checked. I heard between 40-50 dollars. So I go with her to pick up the car, and ready to talk over the price with him. We go in looking fairly upset and prepared to argue with him given the fact that we have called the other mechanics. He pulls up the bill, and immediately I see that the service charge is actually $50!!!! Which means that there standard service charge is $50!!!! Quoting $100 was total bullshit and ripping us off!! He then erases it, and puts in 0. And then pulls it up again, and puts in $25. Then he starts saying what a favor he did for us for cutting the charge to $25 instead of $100. He is super rude the entire time and when we start asking questions, he answers in an extremely derogatory tone. We were appalled by his manner and will not EVER come back here again. Please go somewhere else. The only reason I didn't give 1 star was because he did take it down to $25 instead of the ridiculous $100, and also because of the positive experiences with Ben. If you need a smog check, ask for Ben. Otherwise, stay away from this place! read more

I can't believe I neglected to leave a review. Great deal on tires for my '03 BMW 5-series (researched the best price online and it was the same as their quote) AND they corrected a botched alignment from Big O Tires in Santa Cruz ("new" owner is an as*hat). For tires and alignment, I would highly recommend LAC but for other mech related repairs, I can't comment (I DIY most stuff). All I know fme is that the staff was friendly, helpful and efficient. I'm still loving the Yokohamas and the alignment was completed correctly because the 5'er tracks perfectly and tire wear is even...thank you! read more
