That along with the customer service from Rene and James I will continue to purchase my furniture as well as recommend it to EVERYONE! I bought several pieces of furniture from this company. They were good. No problems so until now. The last furniture I bought is a 3 piece leather couch and the sofa companion. The couch is so straight that it makes you feel you are leaning forward and the sofa is rocky (supposed to rock) but uneven, stays always to one side. The most uncomfortable furniture I've ever been on. The samples we tried at the store were great, our finished product is not usable. I tried to contact the company several times, nobody answered and I left 4 messages by now and again, no answer. Seems like they stand behind only the good products they sell. Very. disappointed. I'm sad to give this review, but I must. I purchased bedroom furniture, living room, and dining room furniture from Larry over the past 15 years. Good prices and average made furniture, but it served us well. In February of 2020, I decided to slipcover my previously made couches and chair/ottoman. I chose my fabrics (2 different kinds that coordinated nicely) and then Covid hit China. They notified me that we were out of luck as far as obtaining our fabric in a timely fashion since factories closed. They were able to get one fabric for the chair and ottoman. So I wanted to cancel the deposit for the fabric that would be held up and was told "no cancellations, no refunds." After a dispute over this, because Covid should have been an exception, we took the credit of about $600.00 credit which was from the 50% deposit. By the way, they did do a lovely job of re-slip covering my chair and ottoman. I give you that. But it's not enough to ever do business with them again. I've tried several times to see if they could make a specific item over this past year, which is what they are known for, but no was always the answer. This past Sunday, March 21, I sent a second request on an ottoman from CB2 I was hoping to have made in order to use my credit (never got back to me on the 1st request or the follow-up phone call I made pertaining to this request), I was told they don't do credits (wrong) and if they did, it expired. After reviewing our order from last February 2020 with the credit, there was nothing about it expiring. So, we disputed this by sending a copy of the invoice with the credit with no response. We gave them 48 hours to respond. Nothing. I basically, I believe they do not care about you as a customer. I've spent thousands with them over the years and this is how I'm treated? Now they won't honor funds they've sat on for 1 year, through no fault of our own. I WOULD NEVER PURCHASE FROM THEM THEM AGAIN AND FEEL IF YOU USE THEM, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Let me start by saying that my brother and I both purchased expensive custom sofas from here. They are great. The leather is nice and hold up well to normal wear and tear. For this, I cannot complain. The service sucks. The couch was delivered to my house and when the delivery guys put my sectional together it was crooked. Only after they left did I notice that the leather was damaged in two of the back sections of my sofa. I immediately called customer service and left a message. A woman called me back and told me to send an email with pictures so I did (of both the crooked brackets and torn leather). A week later I was contacted by phone by someone who said they'd send a technician out to fix it. No one contacted me since. I called a few times and a month later I received a do-it-yourself leather patch kit in the mail?! WTF?? I paid over $3000 for a damaged sofa and this is all I get in return???? Never again. UPDATE: So I got a call from Rob the new owner and they made things right. They picked up my sofa and fixed the damaged ends and returned my sofa. I appreciated everything they did free of charge. Unfortunately they forgot a bracket on one side so I had to fix it myself (once I went to the LSJ to pick up a bracket). Overall, the quality of my furniture is first rate. The service is better with the newer staff (the original CSR I dealt with is gone). When I went to the store to grab the bracket, I saw a bed frame I want.... I think I'll go back there again for more furniture, hopefully with better delivery service next time. read more

I wrote a review before but it disappeared from Yelp! Run away now. These people should be shut down and I'm shocked they aren't yet. They took one year to get my living room furniture fixed after going round and round with James and their horrible staff and it still isn't right. They will blame it on you and your custom order but that's what they do here is custom orders so burden is on them to get it right. You will get every excuse in the book even though the plans and original photos given to them never changed. I wish I would have read all the reviews here before making the mistake to work with them, I could have saved myself so much time and headache. They are so unprofessional. ***update*** the owner Robert reached out and I thought he wanted to help us. He asked for our invoice and I emailed it to him. BUT instead of helping us, he posted the reasons why our chairs are falling apart. He's basically blaming me for buying subpar/low quality chairs FROM HIS STORE. If he cared about quality, if he cared about his store & business, if he cared about the consumer then don't you think he should care about the products he sells in his store??? And rather than blame the customer for not knowing the poor quality of the chairs, don't you think he should apologize or say something like "i've talked to the supplier" or "we no longer sell that product in store"?? He's saying basic wear and tear but we only use 2 of the 4 chairs because my kid is still in a highchair, yet ALL 4 chairs are falling apart. And he's incorrect, we've only had the chairs for 5 years (not 6) and they started to fall apart last year at year 4! Maybe he should put a sign on these chairs that says "will fall apart in 4 years". I spent $5,357 there, so if I knew they were going to fall apart, I would've spent the extra $ for better quality!!! Completely appalling. We were return customers too but we will no longer recommend or buy anything from this place. I wasn't even looking to get our money back, just a "we can help you fix the chairs" or a "bring them in so we can take a look at them" would've been nice. 100% mismanaged. read more

Amazing selection - these guys can order or custom build anything! We had a gorgeous upholstered sleigh bed made and delivered. Every step was excellent. Their customer service was fantastic. Delivery and setup was very reasonable too and they did nice things like make sure everything was aligned just as I wanted it in the room, making sure to be neat and tidy, washing their hands before unwrapping the bed to make sure it didn't get dirty, etc. Will definitely use them again. And their prices are great. The online site shows only a small fraction of what they can do. The location is totally random but the shop/warehouse is worth a visit! Really unique place. read more

Hi, I can not express how disappointed I am with the service post purchase at Larry St John. There is one man in particular named James who I have been dealing with. The couch quality was good overall, but the service has made me write a review which I rarely do to warn future possible clients. There was a misunderstanding of whether I wanted the 3 pieces sectional couch to be rounded or square in the corner - the diagram had both on it. I take part responsibility for the error but Larry St John, James specifically was beyond rude to me when I asked that they bear some responsibility as well. This is the same person who berated me when I said factually they would cover delivery costs based on a conversation with their sales person (Marty who I enjoyed working with) with "Deliveries are available for an additional charge through an independent delivery service. This service is not offered through Larry St. John & Co. We do not waive delivery charges, that is an outside service, and Marty would never circumvent store policy." He was wrong and they covered it after making me feel like I was crazy. I have never been spoken to the way he has spoke to me from a custom service standpoint. I was merely looking for some type of mutual aid that both this company and I were at fault for not catching this mistake pre-production. Some choice phrases included: "I know you are not prepared to make that false (and perjurious) statement directly to Marty." "Your demand for a partial refund is unacceptable and unenforceable." "You can move your existing round wedge corner to another room." "My correspondence with you has been professional and factual. Your's (sic) contained deliberately false (and perjurious) statements which I proved." I pay top dollar for quality custom goods and I have never squeezed anyone for money back. My advice is stay away from this place of business, you can get a better quality custom couch from Pottery Barn for LESS than what they charge. (And we ended up doing this) Plus you have a reputable company backing it who wants to ensure your product is what you wanted without taking a condescending tone. I sincerely hope the owners read this and revisit how they treat customers, if they would have even offered me store credit they could have kept me as a customer, but no. Update: Update on the quality of the bar I purchased. I want to say this bar has not been relocated since it's initial purchase. It is used as a bar storing alcohol, glasses and does not see daily use. Cracks have started forming in various locations, one is even big enough I can stick a sheet of paper in it. I have $30 Ikea furniture that doesn't do this. Ridiculous. Search for their old Yelp page (from before their move) where they managed a ONE star rating from 11 of their 42 reviewers. I had been in search for a new china hutch for a couple months but everything I found was either cheap looking or way out of my price range. Two friends told me about Larry St. John so my husband and I decided to check it out. They had a couple of hutch models on the floor, but they weren't quite what I wanted. I had seen one at Pottery Barn that I loved. Marty ended up coming up to us and asking if we had questions. I told her what I was looking for, showed her a picture of it online and she told me that they could make it no problem. When she quoted me the price, I was floored. It was almost half of what the Pottery Barn one was. The other amazing part was that we were able to make modifications to the Pottery Barn design to better suit our needs and choose from a large range of wood/color options (part of the benefit of custom made furniture!) It took about 8 weeks to get, but it was also over the Holidays, so I think normally big pieces take about 6 weeks. We received it today and I am absolutely in love! It is exactly what I had envisioned and the quality is phenomenal. I think it looks better than the pottery barn one! I highly recommend this place. I know the other Yelp listing had negative reviews (a lot of them about communication and time to get furniture). I didn't have any issues with communication and yes mine took a bit long, but I think its well worth the wait for good, quality furniture. We are already planning our next purchase! Wanted a liquor cabinet to store the bottles that were taking up too much room in the limited cabinet space I have. Unfortunately, everything I could find online weren't designed well for a good collection and were WAY out of my budget. Heard about Larry St. John and how they could make custom wood furniture and I got everything I wanted! I put a design together and took it to Rene. Rene helped me with some design ideas; walked me through our molding, stain, and handle selection; and helped me make sure I stayed in my price range (as in the, I can only afford Ikea price range). Once I put down our deposit, he told us it would be 3-5 weeks and it was ready in 3 1/2. No complaints there! Now I've got a shelf large enough for those tall bottles, small enough for the bitters bottles, a pull-out drawer, pull-out work surface, some wine lattice, and plenty of other shelf space for more bottles. Not to mention something that's sturdy enough to last forever and look great in my living room. It's a shame they had to move from their old warehouse to a much smaller place without the space for the variety and character the old one had. But don't limit what you want to what they have! I came in and wasn't impressed with the quality of the sofas but considering the price of other stores I was still a maybe because I NEEDED a new sofa. I took away 8 samples and was told I had to leave a $10 refundable deposit. I returned the samples after deciding I didn't want a sofa from there and they refused to give me my $80 back. We are writing this review in order to spare potential customers disappointment and save them from wasting money. Friends recommended Larry St. John's & Co., forewarning us about the eclectic décor. That was fine. We found the array of props, palms, and parrots had a certain charm. We loved the "ma and pop" feel and keeping our money local. We especially appreciated the fact that we could order whatever we wanted, according to our own specifications. We were almost happy with a sofa at Crate and Barrel, except for the armrests, which we preferred to be a bit wider, and the length to be being slightly longer. For these reasons, we decided to spend much more (close to $3,000) for a sofa through Larry St. John's. When we ordered the sofa, we gave Rene, a salesclerk, pictures and specs of the sofa from CB and the modifications we wanted. Unfortunately, what we wound up with was not what we ordered and paid for. After getting the sofa in November 2016 and numerous attempts to resolve these issues, we still don't have what we originally agreed upon. The sofa we have wound up has had defects from the start. The back cushions were made too high and the circumference of the cushions was too wide, basically resulting in 17" depth for seating. This was the equivalency of sitting on a bench. Attempts to resolve this have included having the cushions made at least twice, going to Crate and Barrel to take EXACT measurements and photos of the cushions of the 'inspirational' sofa, and having another associate, James, visit our home in person to inspect the sofa. Our last set of back cushions are still not the circumference we wanted, however, we went with the closest they had on the floor after Rene said he needed to take an exact cushion sample to the manufacturer. In order to avoid any misunderstanding, one cushion was made and approved. After dropping off the other two cushions, we waited for about 3 weeks to get the other two cushions. These were dropped off in a trash bag around 10:00 p.m. one night on our porch after we were told they would be mailed to us and then told someone would drop them off 5:00-6:00 p.m. Upon inspection the two cushions are NOT the same size as the other cushion and they are not made out of the same filler. This last mistake resulted in us requesting all communication to occur in writing. We also stated we would like them to take the sofa back as a floor model, refund us our money, and we would willingly pay a restocking fee. We have not heard from anyone since then. After investing as much money as we did, we expected to be satisfied with our purchase. Instead the last six months have been filled with back and forth visits to the store, numerous emails, and phone calls. During most of that time, we have not had a full sofa. Now that we have a complete set of cushions, we are left with a very uncomfortable sofa, as noted by family and friends, too. In talking to our friends who initially referred Larry St. John's & Co. to us, we found out that they had a sofa made exactly like one on display in the store. Maybe placing an order like that would be ok. We can only say that in our experience, that Larry St. John's & Co. was completely incompetent when attempting to make true custom furniture . I am so impressed with this business. I recently remodeled my home and was trying to find a large grey coffee table on wheels with 4 matching end tables, We googled it and couldn't find any coffee tables we liked except one and even though it was very good looking, the reviews all spoke of the poor quality. I know 2 people that bought bedroom sets years ago from Larry St John & Co and raved about the quality. However, I wasn't sure since they got such mixed reviews, but after looking for so long, I decided to take a chance. The place looked so small but was full of furniture, but nothing like I wanted. Rene showed us how to use the computer and we found lots of designs. We found one we liked but we wanted to reverse the drawers from top to bottom. We forgot our measurements so had to come back the next day. Rene had advised us to put towels on the floor in front of our sofa and that would give us an idea of how a table would look there. It was a great idea and worked for us. Marty waited on us the next day and sketched a picture of what we wanted . We told her we wanted end tables that matched but with no wheels or drawers. She sketched that also and took our measurements, and we chose a silvery grey stain on reclaimed wood and she did advise us that it might not look exactly like that because it would depend on what kind of reclaimed wood they used. We were told it would take 3-6 weeks. When I got home, I realized I didn't have anything in writing for a warrantee. I called Marty and ask for something in writing. I received an email from Larry St John explaining the warrantee so I had something in writing. Of course, we had hoped it would be 3 weeks but you know it never is the shorter time range. Then I panicked because I was having company the 4th of July, and I had no tables as I had donated mine to Salvation Army. The 6th week was supposed to be the week after July 4th. I called and spoke to Rene and asked him if there was anything he could do to make sure we had it the 4th of July. Rene was able to push our order through and said it would be delivered Friday (the day before the 4th). But we were going to be out of town so I asked for delivery on the 4th, Saturday. Rene said our area was Friday deliveries, but he would work it out. We got it early Saturday afternoon, but it was a darker gray. I called Rene and he said what Marty had said that it depends on the wood used. He said he knew we needed the tables for our company that evening so to keep them for now and then later they would put another light stain on top. As it ended up, we really liked the dark gray color and our friends did too. Everyone loves our tables and said to keep them this color and we agreed with them. However, we noticed the big coffee table was not perfectly level. We called Rene the next day, and within about a 10 day period he came out to the house with 4 new wheels (incase that was the problem) and with some pieces of wood. He changed all the wheels and then added a couple of pieces of wood between a wheel and the table, and the table was perfectly level. By the way, it was our floor that was the problem, not the table. In the meantime I had found a little strip of wood in a very hidden place on the table that was a shade lighter. I pointed this out to Rene while he was there. Within a short time, he came out again and added another coat of stain and sealant so the area matched perfectly, and then he gave me some so that if I scratched the table or whatever, I could fix it in the future. My tables are all gorgeous, and I am so impressed with the service that I could give nothing less than 5 stars. My phone calls and emails were answered promptly, and we are so happy with how great everything looks. My friends are very impressed too and will be ordering there when they need new furniture. It is so nice to get the exact size and style I wanted and with a reasonable price tag! The great service was extremely important to me too. read more

We bought couches and a mattress from this store over a year ago. The mattress was roughly $1300 and we bought it on sale for $900. The salesperson told us that it is manufactured by a family owner company in California. I liked the idea of a small family owned business which is why I chose this store to begin with instead of going to Living Spaces or a Sit N Sleep type of place. Give the little guys a chance, right? Well everything went well during the ordering process and we were happy with the product initially. It has been a year and a half and the mattress is sagging and developing lumps in strange places. I mean literally, the mattress developed an incline. So, I put in a call to LSJ. I received a prompt response and provided all of the requested information. I receive an email instructing me to bring my mattress to them for assessment. Um.....they want me to haul a Cali King out to Gardena for them to determine whether there is a problem, then ship it off to the manufacturer who will then "repair" not necessarily replace my mattress and I will have to transport the mattress back to my house myself. This process will take two weeks. This is the email I sent in response verbatim: "Uh no I cannot And will not haul a california king to you all the way to Gardena. It is not our fault the mattress has issues at barely a year and a half. This has to be dealt with efficiently and quickly. We cannot be without a bed for however long it takes for you get this sorted out. Normally, a reputable manufacturer sends out a representative to check the mattress and makes their determination. Please provide me with the manufacturer information so that I can contact them directly." Mind you, I am pissed that my 11/2 year old $900 mattress is morphing. Do yourself a HUGE favor and stick with the corporate chain stores. In fact, to make certain that my request was not "unreasonable nonsense", I called one of these chains and chatted with the guy about how THEY would handle this situation. He indicated that they send out a 3rd (neutral) party to your home assess the mattress. If they find that it is defective, they arrange the pick up and replace the mattress. How this chain store handles it is industry standard folks. That is how it should happen. Shouldn't have to be berated by an unprofessional jerk because the product they sold you is defective. BTW, there is no written policy stating their procedures and they do not provide warranty paperwork at the time of purchase. Of course, it was my fault for not making sure I walked away with warranty paperwork at the time of purchase, but nevertheless the correct way of handling it would be to cite the warranty and attach a copy instead of berating a customer. If that is even what the warranty states. I couldn't tell you because no one provided me with the paperwork. So, I called the manufacturer myself. Very nice lady. Responsive. But she wants me to bring her the mattress all the way to Corona for REPAIRS. She promised a copy of the warranty outlining this bizarre policy, but it has been two hours and nothing yet. Anyhow, didn't expect a defective $900 mattress, but it is. Didn't expect such a lack of professionalism and such a discourteous response from LSJ, but I got one. And didn't expect to have to either haul a Cali King to BF Egypt or pay a comp to do it, but that is the only option apparently. So, I am out $900 bucks, stuck with a crap mattress until next time when I will return to a corporate giant to avoid this headache. read more

Three or four years ago, I ordered a large media center in the walnut stain, but received something like a honey color. The piece didn't even look like what I ordered, actually. It was supposed to somewhat match a bookcase I had previously bought from them (which is truly a lovely WALNUT piece). The two items are completely different-- not only in color but in style and quality as well. When I contacted Larry St. John to see what to do (I honestly thought they'd take it back), I was told that my media center was, in fact walnut. And they said something about the molding that I can't quite remember. It was something like the molding style I had ordered wasn't available on that media center, which was why the doors and top don't look like what I thought I had ordered and payed for. See? It's all my fault. WTF? The person dealing with the error was named Rene or something. He was really condescending. He's not the salesperson I worked with, that was Marti (?) and although she was wonderful and really knew her stuff, I still felt really let down about the media center. I also felt she was irritated that I was complaining, which I was only doing because I didn't get what I had ordered. She even drew little sketches of what the molding was supposed to look like! And it didn't look like that! I don't know, maybe she felt bad because she knew I was going to be stuck with an ugly, honey colored media center. I still can't stand looking at that thing, and having it in my house reminds me of how easily they ripped me off. it's a honey colored piece of sh*t that I can't wait to donate to Habitat for Humanity or something. I gave them three stars because I ordered my daughter's bed from them, and it is very beautiful and well-made, I ordered a small sofa and a buffet cabinet that are great, and also that walnut stained bookcase, which is actually my favorite piece of furniture that I own. But they screwed me over that media center, so I cannot trust them anymore. It's too bad, from the unhappy reviews it seems like they just don't follow through when things go wrong. I don't know why they don't take responsibility, they sell a lot of furniture, of course there are going to be eff-ups once in a while. So even though I have previously bought four other items from them without any complaint, I don't recommend them anymore when people I know are looking for furniture. A great place to get custom made furniture at a great price. I had a bedroom set made here about 14 years ago and it's still going strong. Though I will say, it's all white painted wood, and after a year or two the knots started showing through. At least I know it's real wood. :) Stopped by recently and they have some great, comfy sectionals at amazing prices. read more

Took them an image of an entire bedroom set from Restoration Hardware that is very detailed with carvings, moldings, edging, reclaimed wood, etc. They built it and customized it to my exact specifications down to the reclaimed wood. I saved a fortune and it is seriously high quality materials and craftsmanship, all for about 1/3 or less the price. Couldn't be happier. read more

I have nothing but great things to say about Larry St. John. The quality and selection is superior, and I have always found their prices to be better than any competitor. I have basically outfitted my entire home with custom-made furniture from here -- night tables, dresser, coffee table, end table, leather sofa, desk for my office, custom-made book shelf to fit the specific dimensions of my office, china hutch and bar stools. Rene, one of the owners and sales people, goes out of his way to do things right and to hook you up on price. I don't even consider going to another furniture store anymore (and I've purchased plenty of piece in the past at other LA furniture shops, i.e., the string of them in Culver City -- but never again). read more

I've referred friends to LSJ for years, but this was our first time using them, and we were very happy with all aspects of our experience. Nice place to get a good deal on quality furniture. Ordered a large sofa 6 years ago and still holding up strong. Just ordered another for game room. Well done. The only thing was the legs had damage out of the box. Be sure to inspect. They told me they would ship replacements but never received and it has been plenty of time now. read more

This place is a hidden treasure even for just a visit! Unlike any traditional places, Larry St John is not your average furniture store. If you have time and are open to look for a different kind of option for furniture store, do stop by. A double decker bus with a statue driver is parked in front...small entrance leads to a statue reception to an interesting layout with pirate room, gazebo waterfall and vintage cars is what you'll see. No sales pressure, no one to greet you with just total freedom to check their beautiful custom built furniture. I purchased furniture at Larry St. John and upon receipt the couch and loveseat had what looked like water stains on the fabric. The furniture was redone but the fabric was not the exact color as the prior fabric but I was ok with that. But, the springs on the new sofa and loveseat squeak every time you sit on them. I tried to get the issue resolved but was told my furniture does not squeak. This was said to me over the phone and without anyone coming out to check it out. I was told to contact Jonathan Louis (their manufacturer), I asked if they had a contact number and was told, "no." I know this company has received mixed reviews but I had a pleasant experience from shopping to delivery. The showroom is much smaller than their old location so it helps to have something in mind. I found 2 swivel chairs in the showroom & a sofa in one of their Restoration Hardware catalogs. Rene was our salesperson & was very helpful with customizing our purchases & he even arrived with the delivery today to make sure our satisfaction was complete before leaving. My only negative comment was that our order was supposed to be delivered in 4 to 6 weeks but actually took twice as long. But in all fairness, I believe one of our fabric choices may have been stuck on one of those containers waiting to get to port. All in all, the furniture seems to be good quality & at a very good price. I guess living with it will be the true test of it's durability & I may be posting an update at a later time but for now I am a satisfied customer. read more
