I'm afraid it's all about the money for Larry. He said I needed my jaw joints replaced. He doesn't' take insurance and it was going to cost well north of $50,000. I went to UTSW for a second opinion and was told the clicking issue I was having would resolve itself without surgery. It did. I took a trip with the money I saved by not listening to him. read more

Dr Larry Wolford did not diagnose me correctly at all. In fact he didn't diagnose anything. What he did was sell me an unnecessary and extremely expensive operation. I paid him $65K (out of pocket) to replace my jaw joints and perform double jaw surgery. This surgery made my actual problem profoundly worse. It is unclear if I will ever regain the full function of my jaw. Do your research. Dr Wolford has a history of misleading and over diagnosing his patients. He is not to be trusted. I read all his reviews and the ones that said to ignore the negative ones. I wish I had paid attention to the negative ones. I have had consults with other equally qualified surgeons and even though they will not come right out and say it, they have let me know, in so many words, that he is absolutely to be avoided. If you have a poor outcome he will NOT take responsibility. This man has no ethics. You will be ON YOUR OWN. Stay away from this surgeon! Just to clarify something for you all, Wolford does NOT have "office staff" he does NOT have a "secretary". He has a wife. Her name is Denise. That's it. There is no one else. No guardrails. Dr. Wolford has made such a positive impact on my life. Not only did he help me feel confident that his surgery plan was right for me, he validated my concerns, spent time addressing my questions, and Denise (his office manager) was kind and understanding with me. My surgery with Dr. Wolford was one of 6 other (unrelated) surgeries I had after a car accident. After having gone through surgery quite a few times, I can confidently say that my joint replacement with him was the best surgical experience I've had. Dr. Wolford held my hand while going into surgery (even though I wasn't too nervous), visited my hospital room 2x a day for the week I was in, and saw me every other day for another week when I finally was released from the hospital. He personally called and checked on me often, and made sure I was given care in any way I needed it. Compared to other surgeries I've had, I at times didn't even see the surgeon post-op for sometimes 2 months, and only saw a PA. His care is just not comparable to any other. For those reading the negative reviews, everyone has their own experience and struggles; however, these surgeries can be scary and should be fully researched. For many of the surgeries Dr. Wolford does (like TMJ replacements), the work-up can be long and frustrating, but that is the nature of these complex surgeries. I did not have any negative side-effects of my surgery - I can chew, talk, and am practically painless - and I fully thank Dr. Wolford for that! read more

I had surgery with him 12 years ago. Initially I went to see Dr. Wolford, he referred me to an orthodontist he worked with in California. Dr. Wolford's office explained that he is the only one who does surgery's on TMJ and is a world expert. He proposed doing upper and lower jaw advancement and a mitek surgery anchor on my TMJ stating it was a procedure he devised that would move my disc back in place. I had a mild arthritis in my TMJs and my disc was reducible. He said the surgery would improve my sleep. I had two other surgeons opinions and they didn't think surgery was necessary. I spent a lot of time talking on the phone to Dr. Wolford's mother in law who worked at his practice who told me stories of countless people getting surgeries from him who were doing great. She said he's world famous. My orthodontist also referred me to a myofacial therapist prior to surgery who said I was tongue tied and recommended to my orthodontist as part of the surgery plan to snip this piece under my tongue to release everything. My orthodontist prepared my bite and made a gap in my upper jaw on both sides for him to cut my upper jaw in 3 pieces. I met with Dr. Wolford the day before surgery and asked if he was going to move my upper jaw in 3 pieces or 1 and he said that night him and his resident would look and plan everything (the night before surgery!). According to his mother in law, he has so many patients he plans the night before surgery and does a 'meticulous' job. Check in for surgery and plan was to move my upper jaw in 3 pieces. He does 1 side and the resident the other side. However there is no discount for a resident learning on you, you pay top dollar and insurance does not cover most of the expense (if any). I wake up and find out that he moved my upper jaw in 1 piece and didn't free my tongue tie! According to him he determined it wasn't needed. Also he did not make me a splint saying "it wasn't needed." You stay there for a few weeks then fly home. In that time my right side upper and lower teeth were not touching so he put rubber bands and said it should come together. I was in pain and had to take pain meds every 3-4 hours. I went home and my orthodontist was not aware (poor communication between surgeon and orthodontist ) until he saw me that they didn't move my upper jaw in 3 pieces. When I asked did they talk he said he was waiting for the report. The orthodontist started trying to close the spaces in my bite that were created by putting a power chain and it collapsed my upper arch. Within 6 months post surgery I now had condylar reabsorption in my right jaw and both TMJ joints in terrible shape and now not reducible. Both Doctor and orthodontist did not address with me what had happened and why was I in worse pain than before my surgery, needed to take pain meds or be in debilitating pain. My follow up to Wolford he reassured it these things take time to heal. My EMT said look for another orthodontist, one who is board certified. What...So Dr. Wolford referred me to an orthodontist who wasn't board certified. I looked and no one wanted to touch me with a 10 foot pole with all my issues and horrible bite. Finally I found a caring doctor and team who assisted and helped me. It was truly a horrible experience, one I would not wish my worst enemy. Well recently I went to a doctor to have another splint made because if not I'd be in pain. And to my dismay, I find out that I have a hole in my skull near my right TMJ joint. Still wanting understanding of what did Dr. Wolford do to me and how do I undo this mitek surgery that most doctors are not comfortable to address since it is not standard of care to apply a mitek anchor to the TMJ. His wife, answers the office phone and I explain the situation asking if Dr. Wolford could call me back. She said it would be best to schedule another consult and it would cost me $700!!!! I explained, I am not looking to receive care from him but would like to speak with him as I have concerning news with a hole in my skull. She replied "to have an intelligent conversation we need to order a MRI and schedule a consult and it would cost $700 for the consult. Would you like to pay and schedule the consult?" Wow. What can I say. This doctor clearly doesn't care about his patients and money clearly is a driving factor with their office instead of compassion and ethics. It has been 1.5 weeks and I have not heard back from him. Please be cautious getting surgery from him, and how he has chosen to respond when things don't work out as a real warning. Very unethical and uncaring. My life is forever changed thanks to him in a terrible way and I terribly regret having surgery from him. read more

Doctor Wolford told me more about what happened to me than I knew. As a youth I wore retractive orthodontic headgear that puled my upper palatine and sphenoid bone up-and-back into my skull. I have been in extreme pain ever since, over fifty years ago and hence. The bones at the top of my mouth would have grown forward since I have a very long hard pallet. But the headgear and restrictive wires closed off everything to narrow the arch messed-up with the major two root bicuspids being removed as the beginning point of my initial orthodontics. Resulting with my face looking like my mouth is pushed backwards. Also my air passageways are reduced to one third normal. I have severe sleep apnea now, and probably as a result of the original orthodontic procedures I received as a youth. I am hoping to get my very arthritic Jaw joints replaced and have the top of my mouth be moved forward and down. Where it would have grown naturally if I had never had my original orthodontics. I do not have the money to pay for the surgery and the dental establishment has always never considered that I have the injuries of severe cranial bone damage that I have. At least Doctor Wolford has given me an honest and accurate diagnosis. I am going to try to find a way to pay for and receive these surgical procedures from Doctor Wolford... Replace my jaw joints, and cut off the upper part of my mouth and move the bones forward and down - where they would have grown naturally if I had NEVER had the retractive orthodontics. Dr Wolford did my underbite surgery moons ago back in 1984. I'm posting now as I need to contact their office with some questions about materials used. No issues or complictions, just curiosity. I had a severe underbite. The first time the surgery was scheduled he cancelled it as he reviewed my case 2 weeks out and decided if we did it then, my jaw would continue to grow which would make it a waste. It was devestating news to say the least to a 13 year old girl but it was the right decision. We waited a year and when he finally did it, it was originally planned to do a bone graft from my hip and again, upon review before doing the surgery he decided he could use bone from my bottom jaw to build out my top jaw without having to do the painful 2nd surgery. I was one of the first people to have bone screws used which was advanced technology for its day and it shortened the time my jaws were wired shut from 6 weeks to 8 days. I know my parents spent a small fortune as this was not covered by any insurance back in the day but they wanted the best and he came highly recommended. I am now 49 years old and have had no issues and it changed my life. Dr. Wolford was excellent 30+ years ago and if need be I would fly back to Texas and have him be my surgeon again. read more

I have never given a review on anyone but I would like to tell you my story about this wonderful man and great physician. I was involved in a terrible car accident over 20 years ago and my temporomandibular joint and disc were severely damaged. I went from one oral surgeon to another trying to find help. I was in so much pain that I could not function. I could not eat but a few bites at a time and lost so much weight. My worse symptom was dizziness though. I felt like my life was over. Through God I somehow found Dr. Wolford and he performed a bilateral TMJ replacement. It is a difficult and serious surgery but I am so glad I had it done. It gave me my life back and I went on to become a family nurse practitioner. I would not let any other dr. perform this extremely demanding surgery. My son's lower jaw was broken during high school baseball practice. Dr. Wohlford treated him with care and compassion. He did not recommend surgery. Dr. Wolford's approach was conservative and appropriate. He consulted with our orthodontist to develop a treatment plan, and my son's face healed beautifully. He now has a perfect, symmetrical bite and you can not tell his jaw was broken in two places. I am grateful that Dr. Wolford saw my son just hours after the incident, and guided us in the right direction. If I could give Dr. Wolford and his office 100 stars I would; I owe my life to them. I had bilateral joint replacement surgery that Dr. Wolford performed in December 2010. Before I found Dr. Wolford, I traveled to 3 different surgeons, all who misdiagnosed me in different ways. Drs. who would take one look at me and either tell me I needed cosmetic fixes or even something as sever as a rib bone graft in my face. My father found Dr. Wolford through a family friend who's son has seen him years back. After extensive research, my dad and I flew from NYC to Dallas to have a consult with Dr. Wolford the summer of 2009. I had a CT through Baylor where it was discovered that my body had completely reabsorbed the cartilage that cushions the TMJ. As a result of that likely happening when I was going through puberty, my joints had worn down over the next 10 years. My condyles had been so worn down, my bottom jaw was essentially resting on my top jaw. My case was complicated since my jaw had be deteriorating for years. As a result, my entire jaw anatomy had shifted, causing my top jaw to angle and my bottom jaw to move back, closing my airway to 5 cm, close to a third of that of a normal airway. Dr. Wolford caught all of this immediately and spent 2 hours meeting with me that day going over my CT scan. He drew on transparencies over my scans, measuring my angles and showing me exactly where reconstructed joints would go. He answered all my questions in the most compassionate, calm, and comforting way. In preparation for my jaw surgery, I needed to have braces put on. Dr. Wolford communicated with my Orthodontist in NYC and my teeth were aligned exactly how they needed to be for my surgery. I had my surgery on a Friday and Dr. Wolford was by my bedside Saturday morning making sure I was okay. I woke up being able to breathe; it's hard for me to explain how amazing that feeling was. Needless to say, I cried with happiness and couldn't stop thanking Dr. Wolford. Dr. Wolford has a special area in the hospital where his patients recover with 24/7 nurses. My parents were able to take shifts and stay by my bedside the entire time as well. As soon as I was able to walk, swallow, and go to the bathroom on my own, I was discharged (that Tuesday). I remained in Dallas for two weeks following my surgery and saw Dr. Wolford every day/every other day for follow-ups. I could go on forever about how attentive and caring Dr. Wolford's office is. Even to this day, 6 years later, I can email Dr. Wolford/Denise and get a response within a day. And yes, the price tag is hefty, he doesn't accept insurance. However, to me, the surgery with Dr. Wolford was worth every penny. To know that my jaw was done once and done properly allows me to sleep at night. I get one surgery to fix 1 problem that he said would solve it. Post surgery he says the original problem still persists with some complications. But to fix it I would have to pay more than 6x the average for a surgery to fix the problems that the 1st surgery did not fix. I don't understand it's really unfair if the first procedure was supposed to fix it in the first place, I already paid so much. If Dr. Wolford tells you you need a surgery, and someone else says you don't - you'd better be awfully sure before deciding something is unnecessary. We had a dozen other well-qualified doctors miss our son's growing bone tumor. Dr. Wolford spotted it immediately. The pathology report now on my desk is very real. My 19 year old son had an osteochondroma (bone tumor) growing in the tip of his left jaw. As it grew, it pushed his lower jaw out and to the right, taking his upper jaw with it after a while. He had less than 10% functional biting surface, and his airway was nearly completely obstructed. It was clear for some time that his jaw was growing out of alignment, but 4 oral surgeons, 5 orthodontists and a number of dentists failed to figure out why. They all agreed he needed surgery, but just chalked the growth up to unusual development. Finally, one of the other prominent oral surgeons told us that the surgery was so complicated and intricate, that there was only one Dr. we should consider - Dr. Wolford. The oral surgeon said that if it were his son, that's who he would see, so we made an appointment with Dr. Wolford. He found the tumor on the first consultation, and we began the year-long process of preparing for an incredibly difficult double jaw and airway reconstructive surgery. That 9-hour surgery was successfully completed last week - two days before Christmas. Dr. Wolford saved my son's jaws. Any other surgeon we had seen would have ignored his growing tumor (since they didn't see it) and whatever they had done would have been useless at best, and entirely destructive at worst. In 9 hours on the table, Dr. Wolford literally rebuilt his entire face. His teeth will now function properly, and he can breathe. He has already (within 10 days) regained almost complete feeling in his entire face and mouth - that is almost unheard of for this type of surgery. He is already, at this point, almost completely pain free. Let me repeat - a DOZEN other prominent Dallas doctors missed the tumor Dr. Wolford found. Even more than his diagnostic skill, however, was the stunning level of care we have had. He is a tremendously gifted surgeon - world renowned, and a pioneer of many of the tools, techniques and materials used by the leading edge orthognathic surgeons. He is a clinical professor at Baylor, and he has quite literally written the book for his field. In his office, you will always find other patients coming from all over the world - people regularly travel great distances for his care. He is also well known for fixing other surgeons' disasters. He has decided not to contract into any insurance company networks, as more and more top tier medical practitioners have also done. *HE* decides what his patients need, not the insurance company, and we are *eternally* thankful for that - our insurance company (Blue Cross PPO) actually denied our earlier authorization for the surgery - because our son had just passed his 19th birthday. (An Obamacare coverage limitation on orthognathic surgery.) Had we 'trusted' the insurance company, my son would still have a tumor growing in his jaw. Not being part of the big-brother insurance decision machine comes with a price, of course - the patient ends up paying what the insurance won't. For us, I would have sold my house if I needed to. Surgery is expensive - a 9 hour surgery by a world class surgeon is expensive. Saving my son's jaw was worth every dime. Dr. Wolford is extraordinarily dedicated to his patients. Today is New Year's day - he called us at 8 pm this evening (he is still at the office) to check on things, even though he saw my son yesterday, and will see him again tomorrow. He is in his office until late at night every night, 7 days a week, even though he often starts his day in surgery before dawn. He is ALWAYS calm, reassuring, gentle, confident and caring. He is extremely particular about the care his patients receive in the hospital, and afterwards. He chooses his nurses, his assistant surgeons and his anesthesiologists personally, and works every bit as hard as any of them. My son's surgery was done two days before Christmas, and Dr. Wolford was working straight through the whole time. I deeply appreciate the other prominent oral surgeon in Dallas that referred us to Dr. Wolford, and I will be forever grateful to Dr. Wolford for the rest. Dr. Wolford is meticulous, dedicated and thoughtful. He commands great respect from the rest of the Baylor environment and the wider oral surgery community. I was in severe pain, I was hopeless, I cried, I saw other surgeons and they were very hesitant to operate on me. Dr. Wolford saved my daughter's life when she was just 13 years of age. She was born with a high dental arch and her airway narrowed as she developed a severe Class II malocclusion. At eight years of age a local, highly rated orthodontist recommended retractive orthodontic braces and a rapid expander. Within months of having braces, my daughter's condition worsened as her airway became increasingly blocked as her tongue was pushed to the back of her throat. Several specialists said she had exercise induced asthma. They did not look for and see a structural problem of the tongue being forced back in her now smaller oral cavity thus blocking her airway. She began collapsing while running, having difficulty walking and climbing steps, and suffering from sleep apnea. Finally, a dentist discovered that her airway had become 50 to 80% blocked and sent us immediately to Dr. Wolford who performed orthognathic surgery on our daughter. Three weeks later, she was back in school, active, and breathing fully. Dr. Wolford truly is the best in the world! When she was 17, he also replaced her temporomandibular joints. I came to Dr. Wolford when I was a teenager with severe tmj. He told me I should get a double jaw joint replacement as soon as possible before it's too late. Since he placed his hands on me, I have severe nerve damage, partial Bell's palsy, chronic pain, chronic inflammation and the list goes on. What's more? He paralyzed my eyebrow and gave me nerve damage the SECOND time he sliced into me. Several doctors and surgeons have been wildly disturbed that he would 1.perform a surgery on someone so young with a jaw that still functioned pretty well and 2. would perform surgery on me again even though it was made clear that I was damaged and hypersensitive from the first surgery. The last time I saw him, he said I was one of his "great successes" because I "looked great" and gaslighted me by saying anything that was wrong must be my fault or in my head. His receptionist wife even insinuated I did drugs like coke "to mess up the surgery." I was 19. The only drugs I'm on are the ones my pain management doctor prescribes me since Dr. Wolford ruined my life. I was a straight A student, athletic, loved life, loved to sing, healthy, rarely struggled with any mental health. Now, since he's given me around the clock gut-wrenching pain, I hope I make it to 30 without completely losing my mind and falling apart. The most screwed up thing? Every time I was in his office (I was 17,18,19), I was never the youngest one there. He should not be sawing off the jaw joints of little 13 year olds - in my unprofessional opinion. Won't be surprised to see this comment disappear because ever since I started complaining about my life-altering pain and symptoms, he and his wife ignored me. It's been almost exactly 5 years this May and I was ready to say my piece. It's the least I do. I know a lot of people are turned away by the extreme cost of surgery by Dr. Wolford and there are a lot of very angry, negative reviews because of it, but I recommend not putting emphasis on them. I know I read a lot of them before seeing him and they scared me a lot, all for no reason. In my case, Dr. Wolford truly saved me. I came in as a very sick 14 year old whose jaw joints were in such bad shape that I was barely able to function. I had numerous treatments to try and help my jaw joints, but none of them worked. I began having extreme pain in my jaw, head, neck, and back, terrible nausea to the point where I could not keep anything down, such horrible dizziness and lightheadedness that I was constantly walking into walls and could barely stand, and was truly incapacitated. I had to stop going to school and stay at home just sitting, crying, and praying that someone would be able to help me. I couldn't even watch TV due to the headaches, and was isolated from all of my friends, which for a young teenager is one of the worst things. I saw numerous surgeons who said I needed surgery but due to the complexity and severity of my case they refused to operate. Even surgeons I was referred to by other doctors would not do the surgery. As the weeks and months went on I became sicker and sicker, and eventually I was barely able to eat, drink, or open my mouth. Finally, I was told there was only one person who could really handle my case, and that was Dr. Wolford. He looked at me and immediately was able to see what was going on and how we needed to fix it. He actually believed I was in significant pain and that my joints really were in bad shape, when many doctors had not thought it was as terrible as I said. He explained everything in a lot of detail and was so patient and gentle with me, carefully examining all parts of my jaws and face/head to determine the best treatment plan. While he wasn't sure that the surgery would cure all of my symptoms due to their severity, he said that what I was experiencing could all be due to my jaw, and that once he got in there, there was a possibility that it would all be fixed. He restored the hope I had lost, and actually made me feel like I finally was going to be okay. I was too sick to have molds done or braces put on which made it even trickier, but Dr. Wolford said he would do his best and that we just had to trust him. The cost was high, but after a nearly 5-hour surgery and a lot of hard work, I woke up without seeing the room spinning or like my head was going to explode, which was truly a miracle. Recovery was pretty tough, but the outcome made it all so worth it. Slowly I worked through the liquid diet, swelling, post-op pain, and PT, and things began to look up. Fast forward nearly 5 years later and I am still good as new, pain-free and able to function normally. I did have to go through 3 years of additional, invasive orthodontic treatment that was challenging, but Dr. Wolford communicated with my orthodontist and coordinated everything to where I was able to achieve the best possible outcome. Plus, during surgery he was also able to help improve my breathing and the way my jaws fit so that now for the first time in my life I can close my mouth all the way and chew with my mouth closed, which I had never known were real issues or could be fixed. Thank you will never be enough to express my gratitude for all he has done for me. I am in awe of my final results, and could not be happier with how things turned out. I truly never believed that my smile/bite could be this good, and I owe it all to Dr. Wolford. I really don't know where I would be today without him. His expertise is worth every single penny. Believe me, I know it is extremely stressful and hard to see such a huge bill, but if you really need someone who will fix your jaws the way they should be, Dr. Wolford is worth a visit. My daughter had jaw surgery and chin implant 14 years ago...jaw was really never aligned perfectly,we went in to see him after surgery but he couldn't see the problem... so naive as we were, went on without doing anything...now she has a hard knot on her jaw line...i called office...Denise Wolford answered phone...she immediately started saying i had to pay $450 upfront for xrays...without any concern whatsoever for my daughter...that it may be a screw protruding out. when i told her my daughter does not have that $ upfront but has insurance that will pay for it...and why should she have to pay for something dr. wolford did..she suggested she get a loan. if i could select no stars i would. he's trying to pay for that $9M house!...sickening. read more

Dr Wolford performed a complicated surgery on my 20 year old daughter in July 2013. His presurgery preparation was so complete that the surgery time was greatly reduced. I can't say enough great things about Dr. Wolford and his team. I got several opinions from other jaw specialist and every one of them told me to go to Dr. Wolford. If I didn't get my jaw fixed I would have lost the ability to use it. I was very young when I had my jaw surgery and he was so kind and gentle as well as confident in his abilities. Directly after my surgery he gave us his phone number and told us to call him day or night if I had issues. He has created many of the devices that he uses in his surgeries to correct the jaw. His knowledge of the jaw is unfathomable. Yes, he is expensive. Yes, you have to pay him up front and then get your money refunded through insurance (if insurance covers it). But for me that was all worth it. Don't get me wrong - he informed us of the risks. There was not a 100% guarantee that the surgery would fix my jaw issues but he was the best shot we had. I know there are some bad reviews of surgeries not being successful but he informed us of those risks ahead of time. My surgery was successful. I owe Dr. Wolford my ability to talk, eat, and use my jaw. read more

After consultation with Dr. Wolford I received several other opinions all of which said no surgery was needed for my case. Dr. Wolford's plan included a very aggressive surgery including TMJ joint replacement, which is irreversible and extremely expensive. If you decide to have a consultation at his office, especially where TMJ surgery is involved, make sure you get at least 2-3 other opinions before embarking on any type of surgery he is offering! Other leading specialists in the field confirm that if there is no joint pain and you can function ok, one should never interfere into TMJ, as consequences can be unpredictable and disastrous. read more

Seems knowledgeable and repeated what I'd heard from other docs however after waiting hours to see him was rather disappointed with the experience. They attempted to have me undergo a unnessary CT scan before he even evaluated me (I even brought other images with me which he didn't even review). My journey starts when I was 12 and my parents told me I would need to get jaw surgery for my overbite sometime into the future. In my early 20's through early 30's I had been through numerous surgery's (5 to be exact) with other oral surgeons who had cheap surgery costs but they never fixed my overbite. I had some follow up meetings with Dr. Wolford and than it was time for me to have my total joint replacement. the recovery was rough as expected but I was so glad that I chose to have the surgery done with Dr. Wolford. This experience has completely changed my life and will change many lives. Dr. Wolford is the greatest oral surgeon in the country and deserves nothing less than a 5 star rating. BE VERY CAREFUL! This practice is all about money and highly UNETHICAL! They recommend the most invasive and extensive surgery to make the bill higher. They are not honest about your diagnosis or what surgical intervention, IF ANY!! you really require to correct the problem. Dr. Wolford specializes on TMJ surgery and it is a well known fact that 95% of people with TMJ problems do not require any surgery, even if the disk is displaced or the bone shape changed. If you come here, surgery will be the only option pushed on you and they will try to convince you that unless you have surgery, you will end up in a dire condition very soon, while oftentimes it is quite the opposite - after you have surgery is when your problems begin and the damage is irreversible! On top of that, if you end up with complications, they will refuse to take care of you, unless you pay more money. Get at least 3-4 other opinions before proceding with any recommendations you received at this practice to get an objective evaluation! read more

Prior to deciding to have Dr. Wolford as our surgeon for our 13-year-old daughter, I conducted an extensive search including: attendance at a recent world congress on upper airway disorders, previous patient interviews, and consultations with multiple top ENT, pulmonology, pediatric, and sleep medicine physicians. My background is in public health. I know that even the best doctors in a given field can have huge differences in outcomes. I was searching for the best outcome for our child so she would have a lifetime of healthy function for chewing, swallowing, speaking, singing, and most important, breathing. Over the course of five years, our daughter's upper airway was collapsing and deteriorating due to retractive orthodontics at the age of 8 designed to correct her class II malocclusion. As her teeth were pushed back, upper jaw stretched, and lower teeth left untouched, her airway became severely impaired. There was no longer enough room for her tongue and this crowded the airway. Her teeth and jaws became more misaligned and chewing became difficult. Doctors said she had exercise induced asthma. Worse, some said there was nothing wrong with her! She had so much trouble getting air that she developed sleep apnea and acute anxiety. She could no longer participate in aerobic activities. Yesterday, she went back to school. She woke up from surgery being able to breathe fully for the first time in 5 years. She no longer has severe headaches from lack of oxygen and misalignment of her jaws. Her orthognathic surgery has proven to be transformational. She may be short at times and she usually prefers email over calls, but she is warm, caring, and attentive to their patients. She greets us with reassuring open arms and hugs every time we visit the office, even though they have a very large and busy practice. They are a fantastic team and parents to 5 incredible kids, too.
