With a Bib Gourmand rating, this place has a fantastically priced tasting menu that won't leave you feeling like you've left half of your wallet there. Oh, and with the tasting menu came a bottle of wine! We really enjoyed all of our dishes, but we particularly loved this smoked salmon with potato dish. The salmon was the most tender and almost sushi-like smoked salmon that I have ever tasted. I hated when it was over. If you have the time it's a nice walk through town to or from Agorregi.

The staff seemed far more interested in telling us what we should eat than listening to what we actually wanted. We were repeatedly pushed towards their charcoal-grilled red peppers, which appeared to be the answer to every question despite not being what we asked for. When ordering a T-bone steak, we discovered they had neither potatoes nor a simple green salad available. Fair enough--menus vary. But when we asked if we could have mashed potatoes alongside the steak, we were met with a condescending "that's not how we do it in this place," delivered with an attitude that suggested we'd committed some sort of culinary crime. I also ordered the ravioli. What arrived was four pieces. Four. Nobody mentioned that it was effectively a starter-sized portion, and there was certainly nothing that prepared me for a plate that looked like it had lost a fight with the dishwasher on its way out of the kitchen. What really stood out wasn't the food, though--it was the hospitality, or complete lack thereof. Every request felt like an inconvenience. Every question seemed to be met with irritation. The entire experience had an air of "the customer is wrong" that would be funny if it weren't so expensive. San Sebastián is one of the greatest food cities in the world. There are countless restaurants nearby that serve excellent food without making their guests feel unwelcome. This place seems to believe that arrogance is a substitute for service. I won't be returning.

But instead of a fixed menu featuring all you can drink cider, we chose a different selection. We started off with two glases of Txakoli, or Basque sparkling white wine, along with a plate of sliced fresh tomatoes garnished with olive oil and salt. Splendid! Our main dish was rape, or angler fish, which was recommended by our server. It was a great suggestion. The fish was filleted and its soft white meat was grilled with butter, olive oil and parsley, and it came with thinly sliced potatoes grilled in the same sauce. It was outstanding. We finished off the meal with a nice slice of cheesecake-fluffy but not too sweet. The servers were attentive and answered all our questions, and the atmosphere was lively as other guests enjoyed the fixed meals that came with unlimited glasses of cidra, or Basque hard cider, which they filled from a wooden barrel. I highly recommend this fine establishment.

Just beautiful peppers, amazing fresh bread, blood sausage, and other sausages. Made fresh in-house and served by a couple of older gentlemen who could not possibly have been sweeter to me and my wife. It's the sort of spot where, when you're finished with your pinchos, you toss the wrappers and napkins on the floor and head out. I absolutely loved the vibe in here. As low-key as it could possibly get. The pace is unhurried, but the food reaches you quickly, and you will be blown away by the quality of the sausages, the peppers, the olives, the cheeses, the anchovies and sardines, and all the other basics done so flawlessly that you'll want to come back again and again. A special request for blood sausage was happily honored despite it needing to be stuffed and cut fresh. A perfect place to begin your Donostia journey, because you'll get Basque food as it is, not a fusion or an elevated reinterpretation. Plenty of places in the Old Town do modern takes very well, but this is the fundamentals, executed with perfection.
