Juanitos Mexican Kitchen - Guacamole with chicharrones

My significant other claims Juanito's Mexican Kitchen in Alamosa, CO, to be the best in the area…read more I haven't eaten much Mexican food in these parts, but I relied on my trusty rating breakdown (further below) for guidance with this matter. FOOD There was complimentary chips and salsa. It was okay. I started craving a stuffed sopapilla ($17.99) as soon as I saw it on the menu. The pork was so tender and the green sauce I requested was full of flavor. Highly recommend this meal. My daughter asked for the quesadillas ($12.49) from the appetizers. It was strange that in the middle of the triangular goodies with requested ground beef was a huge pool of red sauce. She enjoyed the side of guacomole ($1.99). My SO had the steak Mexicana ($17.99) which he seemed to enjoy. My other daughter had the shrimp Mexicana ($17.99). She gobbled the shrimp. I tried her beans and rice which I didn't have with my own meal. They were pretty good. SERVICE I really enjoyed meeting the owner. He came to our table and helped clean up some water my daughter accidentally spilled. The only thing I wish that had happened that evening was that all of our meals would have been served all at once. They were spread out minutes apart. AMBIANCE The parking lot was in construction as of 5/26/2023. Inside, the place may be small, yet, there were large and small tables and booths. It's a seat yourself type of place. There were vibrant colors everywhere. A white board with their daily specials was on the wall near the kitchen. I wish I had seen it earlier. Finally, no background music, yet, there was a flat screen with some kid-friendly movies playing. MY RATING BREAKDOWN Food: 4 | Service: 4 | Ambiance: 4 | Price: 3

We're in Alamosa for the weekend and turned to Yelp for help in finding a place for dinner. The…read morereviews here were glowing so we gave it a shot. I love good BBQ and smoke my own meat on occasion, so I was hoping to be bowled over. What a disappointment! They were out of the well-reviewed burnt tips, so I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and my wife ordered the stuffed baked potato. The pork, on it's own, was tender but had absolutely no flavor! I kept wondering why and then it occurred to me: they don't use any wood! There was no smoky flavor whatsoever: no hickory, no applewood, no cherry wood or no mesquite. They simple slow roasted the meat. The only flavor came from the four BBQ sauces provided: a Carolina, Original, Hot Mamma and sweet Mama. They provided pickles and pickled onions which was a nice touch. That's not BBQ. My wife's potato was SWIMMING in a liquid. After some investigation, we realized that it was butter. It had the same bland pulled pork and a dollop of sour cream. She ate about a quarter of it and pushed it away. The coleslaw was limp with little crunch, had onions in it, but no mayo. The place was clean, the staff friendly. I appreciate the "Free Fry Fridays" which gave us free french fries that pretty good. Would I come back? Sadly, nope. I want a BBQ joint where you can see/smell the smoke coming out of the place and taste the smoke in the meat. That's what BBQ is all about.

I've been in this building before when it was the pizza place and original hideaway mind you. Walked in and it just didn't appear clean. It was a bit dark and some bulbs needed replaced. No biggie. Heater registers looked banged up. Ok but maybe the food is good right? Because you can't screw up breakfast...or so I thought. Hubby ordered the 2+2+2 with eggs over medium. I had western omelette with potatoes. The toast didn't even make my $16 plate as noted on the menu. Husband's pancakes were a very light color and didn't appear cooked. We asked for butter and were told they were already buttered. His eggs were also watery and not close to a medium cooked egg. I opened up my omelette to find it oozing...why is it watery? I swear the coffee cups were not clean as I could see DUST floating on top. Creamer looked grey and was not refrigerated. How long did it set out? Overall our meal did not taste good and it just didn't look appetizing either. I was grossed out nevertheless and ate some of the potatoes which were probably the only decent thing on our plates. Sausage patty looked dry and sad to be there with the undercooked egg with oil sauce. I'm so sorry to leave a bad review but I didn't think it was possible to mess up breakfast. We won't be back. I expected better for Mother's Day
