Lantern has completely transformed from what it was, no longer is it a casual dining restaurant but now a fine dining experience right in Yorktown! The menu is made using seasonal ingredients which is always a win. They curate dishes well and their fish of the day combined some interesting ingredients that you'd never think to combine but somehow work together. One other unique thing is the venue does not serve any alcohol, all "cocktails" are made using NA liquors and wines, but don't let that deter you they have some fun things still on the menu. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable and our server Abigail was wonderful! Was rushing home from a trip to see a relative at the hospital and desperate for lunch. We were warmly welcomed upon entering and told to take our time selecting our takeout order. A longtime customer decided to stop and recommend the Greek salad and any gyro-type sandwich, so my husband and I got both - choosing a chicken gyro for our sandwich. The salad was excellent - fresh, crispy lettuce, plenty of cucumbers, tomatoes, Kalamata olives, and the tastiest blocks of feta (not remotely salty). The bread used for the gyro was so fresh and flavorful. The lettuce and thinly-slivered onions overwhelmed the meat a bit, but the sandwich was quite good. Oh, I so very much struggle on this type of pizza joint. Its price is decent, the people are good, and the place is like most any other pizza sports bar. Plenty of TVs, acceptable volume, and clean. My apologies, but I feel that utilitarian food needs to be improved for us to all have better lives. Sauce and toppings: middle of the road... unimpressive. Cheese: The one cheese wonder, with no depth, character, or life. Yes, it was stringy, and gooey as it should have been. But that's where it ends. There's no toss of cheddar or other cheeses on top. No color from the oven turning the mozzarella into a brown and white reckled landscape of goodness. Nothing. It was a bland topper to the rest of the middling tastes. So, you get what you pay for... and when we get this low in price, I usually expect it. I've gotten delivery from this eatery for a couple of years, and recently started dining in. It is very local to me and "Jimmy" the owner is frequently on site. The offerings are generally deli sandwiches and pizza. Ever since I started ordering from them I have been overwhelmed by the huge portions. Today I got a Reuben with fries and it covered an entire large plate. My husband got the New Yorker, which was always a favorite of my son's when he lived here. Even my husband could not finish his sandwich in one go. Most of my family got the chips, which are really tasty and seem homemade. They are a sort of thin waffle chip. My other son today got the Greek Burger and my daughter in law got the Chicken Gyro. Again, huge portions. On a previous visit they had a Greek special with chicken and rice. My son has been craving that since then although it hasn't reappeared on the menu when we've been in. The spanakopita, a Greek spinach and cheese filled pastry, is made from Jimmy's mother's recipe. She just passed away recently but Jimmy assures us she taught some of the kitchen staff to make it just as she did. I have had the spanakopita on several visits and it is stuffed full of spinach. That can be good or bad, depending on your affection for cooked spinach. The dining area is quite large as it used to be a nicely appointed Chinese restaurant for many years called Spring Garden and later Le Bamboo Bistro. There is no remnant of either of those previous eateries. This is a vinyl booths, claw and arcade machines, order at the counter family establishment. All of the staff that I have ever encountered are friendly, customer oriented and eager to please. I haven't ever been in for dinner but during the day there is a steady flow of customers and many families. The prices are moderate but to feed a family of 4 today the cost was about $65 for 4 sandwiches and drinks. So about $15 per person. That must be why the portions are so huge. I really wish many places would offer smaller options and charge less. But any place in Virginia that sells alcohol (they sell beer here) has to charge more for food to make up for that provision that food sales significantly exceed alcohol sales. If you are hungry for made to order, huge portions and a casual environment from a locally owned small business, bring your family, friends and your appetite to this Yorktown eatery. read more

Jimmy, forgive me for not coming in more often and for never reviewing... fresh and flavorful like the first time I stopped by, it's good to see things haven't changed. The chicken gyro was everything I needed. This is a hometown family run favorite for sure. We visited mid afternoon when things weren't too busy. We decided to eat in because we saw a funky table that doubled as a video game on the bottom and I'm a sucker for those types of things. Food was still hot when I got back to the hotel; the waffle chips were delish and didn't disappoint. I've lived in Newport News for 3 years now, and it took me all that time to discover this deli. I was in the mood for some pastrami, so I went with the pastrami and corned beef combo with mustard and Swiss on rye. The sandwich took about ten minutes to come, which I don't mind, because I knew it was being made to order. It wasn't the meatiest sandwich I've ever tried, but there was still just enough so that the bread wasn't the main taste. Good quality meat, and the Swiss was nicely melted. The bread had been griddled so it was crunchy all the way through. To me the best rye bread has a little crunch on the outside but still has a soft chewy inside. A lot of people love the waffle potato chips, and while I thought they were ok, I did find them a little too salty. They have Pepsi, not my preference, so I went with tea. And currently the staff is getting all beverage refills, for covid purposes. But any deli that has Jewish meats but doesn't sell Dr browns soda... it's just not the complete package. This place is an oddity to me. Looking at the offerings on the menu, it checks all the boxes on potential for having a great meal. However, this place falls flat for some reason. Today, I ordered a club sandwich, a chicken parm sub and a philly steak and cheese sub. The club was decent, it lacked the amount of meat a good club sandwich should have. I really liked it came with chips and not fries, clubs should not be paired with fries imo. The chicken parm was also mediocre. Not really a whole lot of chicken on the sub, the roll wasnt toasted, the sub as a whole was very forgettable. The philly steak and cheese sub was the worst philly I ever ate. I have had better offerings from gas stations. The meat was bland, as were the grilled onions and mushrooms. The cheese wiz just added to the mess. The really need to re-think this one. It has taken me some time to get to Jimmy Da Greeks's, but I'm glad I have finally arrived. In the same shopping center as The Country Grill, but at the opposite side is a place worth your time. You walk in and order at the counter, then you are called up to another counter to get your food. Drinks are also sell-service so in essence no table service, just letting you know. Now the food quality was very good and portions were generous. I tested both their "monikers" of being a deli and having Greek dishes. The Rueben sandwich was just right and my Greek egg rolls (no kidding, that is what they are called which look like egg rolls with gyro meat and cheese) were very tasty. Next time I'll try more traditional Greek dishes, but the Greek Egg Rolls certainly captured my attention! Now this place will not offer great ambiance or even easy parking (in my opinion due to being at the very end of the shopping center very close to an entrance from GW Highway), but if you like very good quality deli and Greek offerings, this is a great place to visit. read more

My husband and I had a quick lunch here, and I'll start by saying the staff is some of the friendly people around. Definitely made us feel welcomed, and answered all our questions about the menu. The portion sizes are HUGE, you could probably get away with splitting a meal, unless you love some leftovers! The salads are large, and the feta cheese on the Greek salad was very good. My husband enjoyed his sandwich but didn't eat any of the fries. They also have a Pac Man machine, which was a FAVORITE of mine when I was younger. So it was fun playing while we waited for our food. Me and the wife have had it twice so far. We have ordered it to go and sat in to eat. Both times the food was delish which is a huge plus when ordering to go because other places can be so inconsistent with quality or to go food. We get their bacon cheese fries(BOMB) they are generous with the cheese and the bacon which is nice for the price! We also get their philly cheese steak which I've found here you need to make sure you specifically tell them the philly Cheese steak, AND NOT the steak and cheese. Confusing right? But the philly comes with cheese wiz and the steak and cheese just comes with provolone. Both are good but the cheese wiz cheese steak was upper echelon lolol! So make sure you distinguish which you want. Very open, seat yourself, laid back environment. You walk up and order and walk up to get your meal when called. Usually Jimmy's used to be solid so I gave them a 3 star but I haven't been in a year so I don't know if they are going down hill or just had an off experience. I got the Greek salad and asked for a side of gyro meat which cost me $18 and change plus tip - a bit pricey. I was mostly disappointed when I got to work opened my salad and discovered there were absolutely no tomatoes on my salad tomatoes are a staple they're advertised on the menu! They really balance out the flavor. The gyro meat was overly salty, the feta, olives and dressing all made for an over load of salt (and I love salt!) it actually made it difficult to eat. First and foremost, let me say I'm disappointed. I had good expectations from this place based on other reviews. Below are the photos of $30 worth of food that was not worth it. Mediocre size fries (large container for small amount) a Philly cheesesteak with barely any cheese and it tasted like one of those Kraft slices that just melted on the sandwich, not to mention the mushrooms are from a can, SMH.
