Unless you know anything and everything about bikes you will most likely get stared at, or mocked out the door. It's awful. So, thinking I'd be clever and call ahead this time to save the usual condescension, I ended up suffering the usual treatment. I literally just came off the phone from the know-it-all owner, and the conversation went like this: Me: "Hi there, I'm after a mountain bike seat without a pole" Owner: "Well, they don't come with poles. It's only the child's bikes where the seats come without the poles attached. The adult one's never come with poles" - in tone that suggests I'm crazy for even suggesting that they might come with a pole. Me: "Well good, I'm only after a seat" Silence....... more silence....... aaaaand silence.... Me: "Well have you got a seat for sale?" Owner: "Yes!!" He could have just said "yes, we have seats for sale, with no poles, in between this price range" - but no, he had to try and make me feel like an ignorant fool first before answering my question. To top it off, they're a total ripoff!! I went in to get my brake pads changed, and Ended up paying £50 quid for a load of extra services I didn't even ask for!!! this makes me want to grind my teeth down to a nub. I wish there was another bike shop in Matlock!! I'd happily take all my business elsewhere were it not for the fact that being the only shop gives them a monopoly. If you have the luxury of shopping elsewhere, I suggest you do, lest you get ripped off and talked to like dirt.

They made time to squeeze my husbands bike in although he didn't have an appointment as they understood (and probably sympathised with) the situation. The bike was fixed on the same day, at a good price - we expected a premium to be added because of the fast turnaround. Because the staff were so helpful and accomodating, we make a point of trying to visit now whenever we're in the area. In fact, we even waited to buy our son's first bike from them -wanting to support such a good independent shop. When we went in to try the bikes, the staff weren't pushy but offered really sound practical advice. I'd definitely recommend a visit next time you're in Uppermill.

The staff are helpful and knowledgeable and will make sure you get what you want not what they need to shift. They have a workshop and good mechanic if you manage to break your bike whilst out on the trails and the service prices are reasonable and comprehensive.

Also main dealer outlet for electric bicycles - 'juicybike'. They might let you have a go on one of the bikes or rent it out to you. You can't turn around in Buxton without having to go up a 2 in 1 hill. If you have a bike, you've either got Olympian bulging thighs or an electric motor below your bottom. Worth a look.
