It's worth going out of your way to go to a good bike shop, bf says, and he's had two bikes from…read morehere and many services and upgrades/alterations (180,000 mi on one of the bikes) and highly recommends. It's a coop where the staff are passionate, knowledgeable and cater to all customer types. In stock are great brands such as Surly and Brompton. They won't try to force you to buy something off the shelf, they will help you customise it and go the extra mile e.g. offering to loan us a bike so bf could accompany me home and giving us flapjacks! Purchase also comes with 3 free services after which bike is a good as new.

While Neil M. makes an obvious and valid point about the larger stock of Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op, I don't feel that is necessarily a deal-breaker against buying a bike from The Bicycle Doctor which is still quite sizeable. Plus, I get the feeling that the stock offered by The Bicycle Doctor is quite savvy in its own way, with some unique products which may be hard to find elsewhere in Manchester. For example, an electric bike by Trek at £1,700 and a rainbow of cute pastel-coloured Brompton folding bikes both suggest that people are spending serious money here - in fact I don't think EBC stock electric bikes at all. I parted with cash for an interestingly versatile 100% merino wool 'buff', which can be to protect and the cold and UV also, plus a neat pair of cycling sunglasses which several people have asked me where I bought them from. I am in the market for cycle panniers, and I will definitely consider buying them from the good Bicycle Doctor, especially since they stock the high-end Ortlieb roll-top waterproof designs and even had four or so different colours in stock. On the repairs front, their website states that all their mechanics are Cytech-certified which sounds good enough to me! Lastly, The Bicycle Doctor allocates a significant corner of their precious floorspace to a rack of cycling leaflets detailing local routes, mass rides, and cycle-friendly tourism further afield - an authentic touch which typifies this Workers' Co-op which has been 'Serving the Cycling Community for over 25 years'. Thanks, Doc - you left me feeling good, and good to go!

Not too good for buying mountain bikes, but OK for lots of other things…read more I've been into The Bike Shop on Crossgates Road quite a few times over the last few weeks as I have been in the process of buying bikes for myself and my fiance. It's great for the casual cyclist. However, and it's quite a big however, they don't have that much choice of manufactures and they don't have a lot of bikes out on display. For example, they only had Specialized women's bikes built up and in the store. Their other relatively high-end manufacturer is Kona and they have some pricing issues at the moment as most people will be aware. On the plus side, the staff are extremely helpful, and they have a very good selection of kids bikes, BMX and commuter cycles. Although we bought our bikes elsewhere, we did go back to this store to purchase a car rack and a fair few other accessories and they were really helpful showing me how to set the bike rack up on my car.

So we looked at lots of specialsed bike shops that were really out of our price range. We thought Evans are a big company we will get the range we need. They had 2 bikes in the store to suit our price range but the staff were worse than disinterested. We couldn't pry the information we needed out of the member of staff. We went back on the internet and found the Bike Shop on Crossgates Road, Leeds. What an amazing experience! A massive range of quality bikes. The staff are so helpful and can't do enough for you. I can highly recommend The Bike Shop, we need 2 more bikes next year and will definitely be going back. A VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER

Howard rummaged up an old mountain bike crank from a back room and had me on my way in no time and at very little expense. It worked like a charm all the way to John O'Groats! I hate coming to this shop. It actually gives me anxiety. If you don't ask your bike related…read morequestion in exact, specific terms, you will be corrected, and you will be made to look like a fool. This is not a casual cyclist friendly shop. Unless you know anything and everything about bikes you will most likely get stared at, or mocked out the door. It's awful. So, thinking I'd be clever and call ahead this time to save the usual condescension, I ended up suffering the usual treatment. I literally just came off the phone from the know-it-all owner, and the conversation went like this: Me: "Hi there, I'm after a mountain bike seat without a pole" Owner: "Well, they don't come with poles. It's only the child's bikes where the seats come without the poles attached. The adult one's never come with poles" - in tone that suggests I'm crazy for even suggesting that they might come with a pole. Me: "Well good, I'm only after a seat" Silence....... more silence....... aaaaand silence.... Me: "Well have you got a seat for sale?" Owner: "Yes!!" He could have just said "yes, we have seats for sale, with no poles, in between this price range" - but no, he had to try and make me feel like an ignorant fool first before answering my question. To top it off, they're a total ripoff!! I went in to get my brake pads changed, and Ended up paying £50 quid for a load of extra services I didn't even ask for!!! this makes me want to grind my teeth down to a nub. I wish there was another bike shop in Matlock!! I'd happily take all my business elsewhere were it not for the fact that being the only shop gives them a monopoly. If you have the luxury of shopping elsewhere, I suggest you do, lest you get ripped off and talked to like dirt.
