Langrish House is a 17C mansion owned on and off by the Talbot-Ponsonby's since the 1860s, and their descendants now run it as a fine country house hotel. It has conference and wedding facilities but I only know the comfortable rooms in the main part of the house, which have modern brightly lit bathrooms and power showers and good views of the 14 acres of grounds.
The restaurant is plain but there are wood fires in winter and the food is exceptionally good. We had cornish crab and avocado timbale and wild vension and superb puddings which were washed down with Brown Bros Muacat. There's a good wine list with acceptable house wines (£18) and well as reasonably priced others ones such as Gavi di Gavi (£24). Breakfasts can be the usual full English and variations and there's strong espresso coffee for those that prefer it.
Most of the public rooms have family photos and artefacts dotted around, so one can easily feel that one is staying with friends. The house boasts cellars dug by Royalist prisoners captured during the Battle of Cheriton and who were then imprisoned in them and history continues in nearby East Meon which is a beautiful 18thC village with an historic church.
Dinner, bed and breakfast is £190 for two and £110 for one. read more
