My wife booked a suite for 3 days at £1,000. We should have seen the warnings when we saw three portable fans in a room with a slooping ceiling and small windows which could not be fully opened. The room was like a cauldron on the hottest weekend of the year. With a noisy ceiling fan and 3 portable fans, management must have known about this problem before they let the room. read more

I remember Lainston House as it was when the Craig-Harvey's lived there before it became an hotel, but fortunately all the essential features of the house have been retained and it's not been subjected to the glitz treatment. I have breakfast there from time to time on my way to church nearby, and that is a great treat - a perfect full menu and excellent coffee. I have also taken the Mountbatten Room for a private dinner a few years ago and it was faultless - with the outside terrace being the perfect place for pre-dinner drinks and the panelled room adding greatly to our rather expensively acquired sense of well-being. It's the kind of place that England does so well, although one slightly mourns the passing of the world that created such heavenly places. read more

The grounds are just incredible, and after a very long tedious journey including a broken down car, an RAC man, a three hour garage stop and lots of stress, it was a dream was we drove up the drive to witness it! We were delighted to see our room, it was spacious and the sun was streaming in through the three large windows. The bed was the largest we've stayed in, and was insanely comfortable! I didn't want to have to get up! The lounge had a great atmosphere, buzzing with people sipping on cocktails and taking in some of the fantastic 63 acres of land that surrounds the house itself. The house even has their own Kitchen Garden which is open for you to take a wander and see where you're vegetables for your evening meal are going to come from. I tried the rhubarb and it was full of flavour. We also saw Head Chef, Phil, out picking it! Just beyond the Kitchen Garden lies The Falconry that is home to a collection of owls, and falcons. The birds are all incredible and even respond when you talk to them! We were fortunate to be there with the General Manager, and the Facloner, so we were filled to the brim with facts about the birds. The Great Grey Owl is even trained as the ring bearer from weddings, something I've noted for a later date! Dinner in The Avenue, names after the mile lone avenue of lime trees you can see through the window, was beyond words! I filed myself on some of the largest scallops I have ever seen for my starter whilst the partner in crime tried the pigeon! Both plates were left empty! For main course I had the Seared Dorade with White crab, girolles, bisque, and razor clams, which I devoured every single mouthful and emptied my glass of Sancerre, Les Longues Fins, Domaine André Neveu 2011, and the partner in crime tried the Roast Lion of Lamb with braised shoulder, artichoke, mint, spiced wine, black garlic paired with Rioja, Lealtanza Club Reserva, Exclusive Hotels Edition, Spain 2005. As full as we were, we obviously had to try the desert, I opted for the Tahitian Vanilla Cheesecake with the amazing garden rhubarb, sorbet, and a macaroon. The White Chocolate with Hob Nob biscuit, toffee popcorn, and mandarin sorbet went down a right treat for the other half! We were also lucky enough to have our deserts paired with divine desert wines but the fantastic Sommelier. For breakfast we tried the homemade pastries that left us wanting more, so we decided to fill ourselves up for a second time within a few hours with a bacon and sausage sandwich. I do have a genuine excuse.. We had to try the meat from the pigs that are hand reared on site!! They were great! We had a most fantastic stay and I would certainly make the trip back (minus the broken down car) to eat and stay there again. read more

This place is an old fashioned manor house just outside of Winchester. It has beautiful grounds and has a lot of history. The afternoon tea on a Sunday is lovely and quite reasonably priced considering the hotel class. Perfect place to take your mum on Mothers day. The drinks are really expensive although they have an amazing selectio of wines and cocktails. Great place for a wedding as well, if you're after old fashioned luxury, thats if you can afford it as it is certainly not cheap! read more

Lainston House is a stunning manor house, just a short drive from Winchester. It has a lovely view of the gardens from the terrace, and a lovely sweeping gravel drive entrance. I went here for High Tea with a group of 10 friends. We were taken to a room of our own which, although I guess it was a nice touch, made me feel as though we were in a side room (albeit a very grand side room)rather than in the main part of the Hotel dining area. For me, this lessened the experience, although I'm sure some people might see this as a bonus. The choice of teas and coffees, however, is amazing! We all chose something different and there was a sticker put on our individual teapots so that when the waiter/waitress refilled them, they knew what we were all drinking. The cost was just under £20 per head - rather expensive, but what you would expect from an establishment such as this. I wouldn't go again but I would consider treating an aunt or mother-in-law. For me, it is definitely an experience for an older person. Although there were more cakes served to us than you'd find in a baker's shop,for some reason, we were restricted to just 3 fingers of sandwiches each! (Cucumber, salmon and egg). As I only liked the egg sandwiches, I had 1 finger (yes, it was only that size) of sandwich and then several cakes. It sounds great but, trust me, there are only so many cakes you can eat in 1 sitting before your body screams no more! If there was a better balance between sandwiches (and the varieties served) and cakes, then I would have given this a higher rating. read more
