Until the 1980's, Langold Park was provided as a recreational facility for miners by the coal board. The local council took over responsibility for the park following the closure of the pits.
Since then, sadly, the area has been in a state of almost continual decline. Langold Country Park covers around 300 acres of land, which includes woodland, two large lakes, wildlife meadows, walkways, and areas of recreation. The main lake s popular with local fishermen in the season, and there are two snack bars at different locations throughout the park.
Its in massive need of some considerable financial investment to bring things up to the modern era. Even the main public areas are in poor states, and the old days, when the park area contained a swimming pool, a bar, a cafe and so on are long gone.
That said, while it isnt a place I'd recommend travelling any distance to visit, if you live locally its a great place to walk the dogs or take the kids to for an hour or so to amuse them, and its a place I miss all the more now I live 100 miles away and only get back occasionally.
