My front yard did not spark joy. I had a huge tree with ugly roots creeping towards the house, uplifting the concrete sidewalk and killing the lawn. I absolutely agree with other five-star reviewers. Mike is honest, trustworthy, knowledgeable, professional, respectful, courteous, reliable, a good communicator, is truly interested in helping people, produces high quality work, and goes above and beyond. Honest and trustworthy - My first contact with Mike was over the phone, requesting a quote for a sprinkler system valve replacement, thinking that it was a bad valve. I sent Mike a photo of the valve and from that he suspected that it may just be that some wires are were trapped between two parts that was causing the leak and that the valve did not need to be replaced. He did still give me an estimate for a replacement anyways, since that was what I asked for and in case the valve did end up needing to be replaced, after inspection. Mike arrived about 10-15 minutes after our phone call and performed an inspection. He was able to confirm that it was not a faulty valve and was indeed the trapped wires that was the cause of the leak. He inspected valve assembly, cleaned the filter, freed the trapped wires that were causing the leak, and re-spliced wires there were disconnected during a previous inspection done by someone else. So, he saved me the cost of a valve replacement AND he did not even charge me anything, to boot. Knowledgeable - Mike also educated me on the components of the valve assembly, how it works, the proper use and maintenance of it. Since I have vegetable and fruit plants, we had a discussion about those and he gave me tips on the care for the various plants and trees. Professional - He treated me like a valued customer even though the job was expected to be a very, very small one, which he ended up charging me nothing for. To give it some perspective, I got four other quotes for this valve replacement job and they ranged from $120 to $235 with the former being from an individual who does not have any licensing to the latter being a licensed contractor, like Mike is. Mike's quote was much closer to the lowest quote than the one from a comparable, also licensed, contractor at the high end. Very honest and fair pricing. Respectful and courteous - I had turned off the irrigation water main because of the leak and to test system, after fixing the wires, he asked for permission to turn on the water main, being respectful of my property and me. Reliable - Mike came when he said he would come. This might seem like a given, but before finding Mike on Yelp, the person I booked for this repair the day before pulled a no-show on me. I had the same no-show problem with a handyman I found on Yelp. Evidently, this is not uncommon nowadays, sadly enough. Mike, on the other hand, showed up about 10-15 minutes after getting off the phone with him. He even checked back with me the next day to make sure everything was still okay. Good communicator - Mike has excellent communication skills and was easy to talk to. His explanations were clear and easy to understand and he understood what I was saying or describing. There was no guesswork or hoping-he-understood involved. I never felt unsure if he really got what I was saying or felt the need to repeat myself or rephrase. Truly interested in helping people - Mike mentioned that because of the high workload currently, he does not usually take small jobs like this and the other irrigation project I asked him about. However, because he really is invested in helping others, he took the time to help me with the leak problem, even though it was his day off. Produces high quality work - Mike's modus operandi is to do things right. He noticed that the wires of the valve assembly were "spliced" to the controller system's wires by wrapping tape around the bare wires (done by the original landscaper). He informed me that really, the right and best way to do it is to use waterproof wire connectors rated for outdoor use. He helped me select the correct ones from Home Depot's website. Goes above and beyond - After fixing the wires, Mike even reprogrammed the sprinkler system controller for me and recommended the optimum watering plan for both the front and back yards. And did I mention that he did all this at no charge and that he came on his day off?? read more
