Sun Run Cafe - Breakfast Sandwich

Sun Run Cafe

We happened upon Sun Run Cafe for breakfast one morning because the cafe we were planning to go to…read morein Combermere was permanently closed. So, looking for another option we droves to Maynooth and found Sun Run. It was very busy! There was seating indoors as well as outdoors. With it being a rather chilly morning, we got lucky and snagged one of the tables as another party was leaving. You place your order at the counter and they'll bring it out to you. They have many baked goods like homemade Pop Tarts, Cupcakes and Honey Crullers. But they also have breakfast and lunch sandwich options. The 3 others in my party got breakfast sandwiches, and I got a sandwich from the lunchtime menu. I opted for the grilled cheese. I'm so glad it did- it was great! The bread was baked in house and you could really taste the quality. Then where was 2 types of cheddar with thinly sliced apples ham and some honey. It was delicious and wasn't too greasy or decadent. Everyone else at my table raved about their sandwiches too, including my sister-in-law who got the buckwheat gluten-free option and loved it so much, she made an inquiry as to if she could buy some of the bread to take home. While they don't sell the loaves, it says a lot that she was moved enough to even ask. Overall a great experience here. Sun Run saved the morning- there's a total lack of breakfast restaurants open on Sunday in these parts, so we were really happy to not only get a meal, but impressed by how delicious it was!

Amazing, amazing, amazing! Super sweet staff…read more Hmmm, I got one of their delicious home made granola bars. A lemon cookie, a chocolate goodie and on a separate occassion, one of their chickpea burgers, their iced tea and a slice of carrot cake. Busy little breakfast spot and very popular as a pass through cafe on the way up to or coming from Algonquin Park. One of the only places to get some good food in this tiny town (the other, the Hostel!) Came here for the first time several weeks ago and I had to splurge and try a variety of their items. Staff is friendly, helpful and adorable. The space is bright and welcoming. They have local art too on the walls. The chickpea burger, I requested it be made with a lot of mustard on the bun and they delivered. It was awesome because when the young man handed it to me he said, "chickpea burger with lots a mustard". This made me smile. I also gave a slender kanteen to have the iced tea placed in. To save on plastic. They filled it right up for me, which I wasn't expecting at all. ABOVE AND BEYOND service. The iced tea is a house blend and is very tasty and refreshing. The chickpea burger was well made and satisfying. Driving back to the city I preserved the carrot cake slice and had it upon my arrival. SO GOOD. I would have loved some walnuts in there, yet I know others prefer no nuts. The price is incredibly affordable and well worth it. For the first set of goodies I paid jus under 8 bucks and for the chickpea burger, the carrot cake and iced tea came to jus over $17. Coming from Toronto an order like that would likely be closer to $25. I would highly recommend this place. The first time I saw a key lime dessert I really desired to try it the second time. Yet they didn't have it when I returned. This place is worth stopping. Maynooth is very charming so while you wait for your food you can have a look see at the other shops on that strip of their "downtown". Very busy on the weekends and closed Mondays and Tuesdays. If you see something that appeals to you. Get it! Support the local community. You'll be happy you did. I am craving that key lime treat and now I need to wait.... will definitely return again.

Twin Fires Dining - Confit Duck Leg & Quebec Duck Sausage

The restaurant at Sir Sam's Inn used to be one of the very few places in the Haliburton area where…read moreone could get a good meal. We haven't been there in several years, but returned recently for dinner. What a disappointment! The meal portions were extremely small and did not reflect the menu. The salmon dinner was about one-half the size of a normal meal portion and was thoroughly overcooked. The Steak Oscar was a tiny portion of overcooked beef. The accompanying "crab" was either fake crab or something that came out of a can. The cheesecake dessert looked like it had been purchased at a grocery store, rather than locally made. The wine list was meager, with most items out of stock. We have heard rumors that this business is up for sale. Given that the dining room was almost empty on a Saturday night in peak holiday season, the future doesn't look good for this clearly declining restaurant. Would not recommend.

It was the Saturday of the Canada Day long weekend and I came to Twin Fires for dinner. My party of…read morethree and I made a reservation in anticipation of some crowds and were pleased with our meals. I ordered the Confit Duck Leg and Quebec Duck Sausage which was cooked to perfection. The duck leg was tender and well-seasoned, whilst the sausage had an amazing smokey flavour to it. Despite them both being from the same cut of meat, each had it's own flavour profiling that added to the entirety of the entree. Accompanying were roasted red potatoes, asparagus and carrots, which were served with a spiced prune and rhubarb sauce. All aspects of the dish played their own part in making it delicious. Compliments to Chef Dave! All of the ingredients used were fresh and locally sourced (for the most part) which is a huge plus considering the restaurant's locale. There are few items on the menu which also speaks to the quality of the food you will receive. The service I received was excellent as well, everyone being pleasant throughout its entirety. This is a place you need to eat at whenever you're in the Eagle Lake region as it gives the bougiest of downtown Toronto fine dining restaurants a run for their money - without the super high price tag and crowded dining spaces!

Not sure how to characterize it so I'll just describe the experience. We (two people) wanted to order a a regular coffee, an iced coffee and a bagel with cream cheese. The lady, after listening to the first item, just went back to make it. In the meantime, another lady came and asked if we mind getting another customer ringed up. We were like, sure! In some time, the first lady came back with the iced coffee and asked if that was it. Now, I don't know why a barista would assume an order of just one coffee between two people. I said I'd like a regular coffee as well. And before I could continue to order the bagel with cream cheese, she turned around to pour the regular one. In the meantime, the other lady came again asking us if we'd be okay with another customer ringed up. It was a bit weird (certain customers made to wait while others allowed to skip the line?). We left skipping the bagel order, sensing that perhaps we were not welcome there. Coffee was okay but this was first of its kind of experience for us in Canada. And on "Canada Day", of all the days!
