We were staying in Stroudsburg and decided to look for a German restaurant. Little did we know that…read morewe would end up in Germany at this little place.(only 7 miles from the Hilton!). We wondered in late and asked if they were still serving food. There was only one other table occupied and they were having drinks so I know they made an exception for us. I had the schnitzel and my wife had the chicken special. Both were excellent. Sides were great. The best part is trying to decipher the menu and order. Our waitress did her best to translate since menus are only available in German. This is what makes travel so fun! After a few beers and some laughter, we wrapped it up and headed back to France. Now we can tell everyone that we had breakfast in Paris, lunch in Stroudsburg, and dinner in Baden, Germany.

It was Sunday, and the sleepy town was pretty much shut down. There were a few restaurants open, but mostly Pizza, Kebab, and other fast foods. The downtown, open air shopping center is a few square city blocks, so I thought to just explore hoping to run into a German restaurant/ brasserie. I didn't want to Google anything. Luck was on my side, and I found this place open and with plenty of patrons sitting outside enjoying a midday meal. The menu has many choices even some non-meat selections. I ordered a Jagerschnitzel topped with a mushroom sauce. It took a while to arrive, but it arrived piping hot with an accompaniment of vegetables and side of fries. The menu is in German and French, though the staff attending me spoke German, French, & English. It's a relaxed place where apparently locals come to enjoy a late Sunday lunch. The schnitzel was perfectly fried and deliciously tender. Portions are huge, and definitely value for money for a real German treat. People here stay longer and socialize at an unhurried pace. There is nice indoor seating, but outside is the place to be when the weather is good.

The courtyard was beautiful, several tables all set and ready for the dinner crowd. I walked toward the restaurant and saw the daily special board, but there were no staff, at least outside. I checked out the board and saw they had Pfefferlingcremesuppe, which is one of my favorite foods! A minute later, a woman walked out and greeted me. I told her I knew it was a Friday, but would there be a table for 2 available? She smiled and said I could come now or at 8:30- I chose 8:30 as 5 pm was a little too early to eat. I left and came back at 8:30, the place was buzzing, and the courtyard was packed! My dining partner couldn't make it, so it was just me. The same woman was there to greet me, she smiled when she saw me and brought me to a table in the middle of the courtyard. I was seated and given a menu. I ordered a cold beer and perused the menu. While there were many great things on the menu, I already knew what I wanted, so when she returned, I ordered the soup and the Schnitzel. The soup was delicious and a large serving, and when I finished, my Schnitzel arrived, with fried potatoes and bacon, and a nice salad. Even though I was by myself, I immensely enjoyed the atmosphere; this place is all local, all having a great time, and friends greeting each other. Service was on point, attentive without being overbearing, and friendly! I had another beer and enjoyed the ambiance, and then paid my bill and walked back to my hotel. The "Stammtisch" (German for "regulars' table) is not a table, but a section of bar. Great traditional fare with accompanying beer or wine. I dined on the traditional schnitzel and it did not disappoint as it was accompanied by a great local beer. Keep room for dessert and some schnapps to help with the digestion.
