As we entered a young female server was placing small folded sheets of paper with numbers written on them on all the empty tables. Only one table inside was occupied, by a party of two. The server asked us if we had a reservation. We said no. She looked around at the empty tables and said, "Take any table you want." We took a corner table. Two young gentlemen entered the restaurant after us and sat at a table near ours. Ten minutes passed before a male server approached the table with the two gentlemen, handed them menus, chatted with them a minute and then disappeared. More minutes passed. I went back to the kitchen and the male server was deep in conversation with a cook. I asked him if he spoke English. He said yes. I said we had been seated 20 minutes ago and had yet to be offered water, a menu, etc. He apologized profusely, and when I pointed out that he had brought menus to the table near ours, he said he assumed we had already been helped. He said they were having trouble with the female server, and he had only just been called in to help out and would bring us menus right away. As we waited more minutes, a young couple with a dog entered. They stood in the alcove some minutes more, looking around to see if anyone would seat them. Eventually the male waiter reappeared, walked over to them, greeted them jovially, bent down and began hugging and brushing and playing with the dog. We bid them Au Revoir as we exited the restaurant, the waiter protesting that he was just on his way to our table.

It's quaint exterior will draw you in and the cozy interior or lovely patio is the perfect place to enjoy a traditional Alsatian meal. We stopped in for lunch and while they had a prix fixe menu with specials of the day- since they have an extensive wine list- we chose to order a variety of starters and entrees to share around the table and pair with some of their excellent wines. Be warned- the portion sizes are huge so if you are not eating with a group- be careful about the amount of food that you order. We started with 6 appetizers- everything from herring with apples, goat cheese with tomatoes and zucchini, fois gras, head cheese, crawfish salad, and a pate. All were excellent and the fois gras was so good we ordered an additional one to enjoy! As for our entrees- good thing we split those as well. There was chicken breast with confit and olives, la choucroute two ways- one with 9 kinds of meat and sausages, and the other with 3 different fish. The sauerkraut on the fish version was so sweet and buttery it was hard to believe it was sauerkraut ( it was tasty, and this from a girl who does not like sauerkraut!) The service is casual and friendly. If you don't speak French- the menu does have English translations on it so you can bridge the communication gap that way. Our lunch per person with all kinds of wine and food only ran about $35 Euro which was really reasonable. And remember if you go for lunch- they had several specials on the day we were there- all reasonably priced. If you are looking for a traditional Alsatian restaurant located in in a great spot right by the "covered bridge" in Strasbourg- check out Restaurant Ami Schutz. Exactly what you think a restaurant in this town should look and taste like! And even better? There were more locals in the place than tourists so you know it is a good choice!

The restaurant is located on a nice tree filled square. We ordered a salad which we shared, followed by a meat and fish main course. Both main courses were nicely prepared. My wife really enjoyed meat dish special with spätzle, I enjoyed the fish with rice (both pictured). Service was excellent. We also enjoyed a bottle of rose - the wine prices are excellent throughout Strasbourg. Highly recommended.

We ordered a Munster Flambé that was prepared in a wood fired oven. It was AMAZING! We also ordered the "4 Seasons" pizza. It was ok but the tomato sauce was a bit heavy and it had a lot of capers on it. Overall it was a really nice experience and I will definitely return the next time I am in the area.

And when your walking tour guide tells you a fun story about a Michelin-starred restaurant and it's interesting name, you decide to take yourself there. I haven't been to a Michelin-starred restaurant in a very long time and I have never been to one alone, but it was still a lovely experience. The staff was very attentive, kind, and knowledgeable. The food was inventive and enjoyable, though I admit I had a hard time understanding the waitstaff sometimes, so I wasn't always sure what I was eating, but luckily I'm willing to eat anything. I had the discovery menu (appetizer, fish, entree, dessert), 3-course wine pairing, coffee, and the restaurant's "extras" which included some very tasty amuse bouche at the beginning, small desserts with the coffee, and even a cookie to take a home. I did not order from the cheese cart, but it was fun to watch it wheeled out for others. For a Michelin restaurant, I found it very reasonably priced and accessible, though I'm not sure I can say I was completely blown away by the food (wine was fantastic, though). But I did see the crocodile! Which is where the restaurant gets it's name: in the 1800s a sailor came back from Egypt with a stuffed crocodile and had the bright idea to use it as a marketing (who wouldn't want to see a stuffed crocodile?!?)

I wish I would've taken photos to post, but the dishes were getting destroyed as soon as they came out. We had the rhubarb pie as a dessert and Panna cotta. The restaurant is very cozy and it was fairly busy yet we found a table after a short wait! We started off with a couple of appetizers: sunflower/pumpkin soup and eggs/potato quiche! For the main entrees, we ordered regional dishes such as sausage/pork with sauerkraut along with a very delicious venison with mashed potates! The food at this restaurant is extremely delicious and their cooking is much more German influenced rather than typical french food!
