One is forced to take entirely on trust the nature and cost of any repairwork deemed to be necessary. Rejecting the protocol of scheduled services by manufacturer-accredited workshops is truly perilous - the system has ways of destroying the naive in the end. And so it was, when I took my 2016 Golf Gti Performance to Lookers in Battersea for a scheduled service, that I received one of those tragic early afternoon calls from the service department with the "news" that my car had at some point developed a leak in the coolant system. Having little choice at that stage, I authorised £81 of expenditure on diagnostics which Lookers would otherwise not have been prepared to carry out. In due course the service crew advised me that it was the thermostat housing that was leaking and that the cost of putting things right would be somewhere north of £1,300. Lacking the emotional resilience to deal with the blow, I declined the offer of service emphatically on the basis that, with unforeseen expenditure of that magnitude, I would prefer to shop around and, in all likelihood have the work carried out elsewhere. Within a day or two, I had the fault investigated independently. It transpired that it was the water pump, not the thermostat housing that had failed; the repair set me back £826 in the end. The disparity is not the source of my complaint however. It is that, unbeknownst to me when I collected my car from Lookers on the day the service had been carried out, the coolant system had been left empty and the vacuum screw cap on the coolant tank left loose. In pretty short order, the vehicle overheated, forcing me to abandon it temporarily in order to avert major damage to the engine. I have no idea whether the car had been left in this state by Lookers deliberately in order to express pique at my rejection of their repair estimate. At the very least it was negligent, unprofessional and unwarranted. My subsequent calls to lodge a complaint with the service department were not returned, though in the end I did manage to catch the assistant service manager when he was not otherwise engage. His response to my complaint was apologetic but unrepentant. My experience reflected a breach of the trust one expects when exposed to areas of expertise and know how that are not one's own. In all likelihood, Lookers' behaviour is characteristic of its industry as a whole. However it should not be. The public deserve better standards. Needless to say, I shall never take my business to Lookers again.
