Working with Darin from the quotation stage to the installation stage, the communication and timeliness of the project went smoothly from start to finish. Darin is a next level master gate builder--he puts in the extra effort to ensure the customer is happy. I wanted a design and installation of 2 modern looking commercial gates with an automatic gate opener that could schedule to open and close the gates at specified times. I knew exactly what I wanted and sent Darin some sample gate photos I found online, and he was able to extrapolate from the photos to sketch up a full design. The quoting experience with Darin was much better than 2 other commercial gate installers I had contacted. (Not shown on Yelp or Lam Welding's website, they have an extensive album of sample photos from completed client projects stored on a tablet. The projects are more modern looking, and you can request to view this to get ideas.) Darin first met me at the location and did his measurements, then mocked up the design, and lastly confirmed everything by visiting the site again with our electrician to ensure everyone was on the same page. There were some challenges because the gate location was located on a slope. Darin was able to problem solve, select the gate motors, provide guidance to the electrical installer and also recommend we purchase fire switches to meet the local fire department's requirements. The fabrication of the gate was expertly welded together. Same with the powder coating. The installation of the gate motors was done smoothly, and everything was connected and worked immediately. Darin, Uncle, and Father worked so hard to getting everything installed. Everything just worked. This was the best project experience I've had this year, and I absolutely loved the end result with a perfect look and quality feel to the gates. Thank you Darin and family. Advise to other Yelpers: go to California Department of Consumer Affairs to check their license before hiring them to do your fence or gate. Even this business owner still used ridiculous excuses for their bad job. That means she doesn't have any knowledge about welding business! I showed these pictures to a licensed professional welding business, they said the gate was very poorly installed and I will continuous to have issues down the line! Look at the pictures, business owner! The base of the steel post is not anchored to soil or anything. Why you guys keep blaming to the soil? And what earthquake? After the installation about a month or two, the gates started having problems with closing and opening continuously! After the father's "repair" on my gate, the neighbor's gate couldn't close. After his "repair" on the neighbor's gate, my gate couldn't open!! Now they are unable to fix their terrible job, then blame to earthquake! We have not had any earthquakes recently in Santa Clara! Other houses in my neighborhood don't have the same problems with their gates. Shame on this gate business! Father did the bad job, could not fix it, then disappeared. The son started exchanging emails with customers, wanted to get more money to "repair" his own father's job. This just likes a scam set-up to steal money! The pictures can say thousand words. These guys do really good work for a reasonable price. Some lame kids ran a car into my gate a few months back. Although I'm a DIYer I do not trust myself to weld even two pennies together. Darren and one of his team-mates came in and knocked out a half day job in a couple hours with stellar results to say the least. There were a couple things not quoted that he also threw in for free which took a few more minutes of work. I wanted an iron fence with a cement mow strip under it to frame the lawn and block out weeds from growing under the fence itself. I received a few quotes from other companies all much higher and none would do the cement mow strip, I would have to get somebody else to do that part after the fence installation. Lam Welding did both and for less than the others quoted, just for the fence installation. It turned out awesome. My neighbors are envious and I'm happy not to have animal presents on my lawn. Lam Welding did my gate 3 years ago and they did my neighbors' gate 2 years ago. They are supposed to be mirror images of eachother as we have a shared driveway (the gates are to left and right of shared driveway). The gate is black with gold accents. I told Darin to keep record of paint used as I selected a silvery gold. When they did my neighbors' gate they used a bright gold -- Darin let me keep the spray can of mine and he texted me what he used for my neighbors'. He apparently didn't care if they matched or not. He came on site the day he quoted and installed my neighbors' fence. The bright gold on my neighbors' fence made my silvery gold look old and faded so I went out and bought the same bright gold paint and painted it myself recently but all of this could've been avoided if Darin cared enough to pay attention! This is how they repay you when you get them extra business. Another thing -- they told me they were going to use powder coat on the black fence (I paid extra for that) but I think they used canned spray paint instead. Fence paint looks faded and rusting. I'm giving them an extra star only because the fence design is pretty. read more

This is truly a hidden gem. Darin is nice, funny and professional. He showed up on time to give some really nice suggestions on my iron gate project and in the end provided the most competitive quote. He's such a cool guy that if you talk to him nicely he would go extra miles to satisfy your requests. The gate he installed turns out to be magnificent. His technique is also well thought out in my opinion. For example, he built a concrete trench for the gate to roll on, which is so much better than having the track sit directly on soil. The concrete makes huge difference to make sure the gate rolls smoothly. It also levels so well that pickets of the fence and the gate are perfectly parallel to each other when the gate is open. Even a week after the job is done, Darin would still reply to my message to help me with some technical questions such as what accessories to buy to operate the gate opener on the phone. I had to weld a pedal to a worn out crank in my son's cycle. I did not want to spend lots of money on replacing the crank etc. I called Lam's they were very friendly on the phone and quoted a very reasonable price. I went over to the shop and the job was done in 5 minutes. The welding was done well. They even helped me to load up the cycle in my car, which was a tight fit. We called him and he said he was busy and would try to come late evening or in the morning the next day. Well no show or phone call again. What ever happened to common courtesy.
