We have no cancer but both of my parents, my younger sister, my grandparents, both granfathers died young, at 49 and 63 of heart disease, 7 or my Dad's 8 brothers and my mother's 4 siblings....so much heart disease and only a couple people lived beyond 83 and many died in their 60s and younger. The NM Heart Institute was working through Presbyterian hospital at the time but not for long. There was a split and they built a wonderful facility across the interstate and we feel fortunate to have them. My cardiologist saved my life. He was a GREAT doctor, and I am alive today at 77 because of him and the Heart Institute. My husband died of cancer 19 months ago but used the Heart Institute over the years as have I. I won't be surprised if I have to use them in the coming years. I have gotten such good care over the years. They are outstanding. I most highly recommend them.

In my opinion his treatment of my health issue was not properly addressed. If anyone begins atrial fibulation I would recommend someone else. I'm not sure how new the hospital is, but it FEELS new(er). It's very clean without having that sterile, hospital feel. I like the signage. I was also amused by the vending machine that sells scrubs. I suppose that would come in handy should one of the employees forget or need a new pair of scrubs. The nurse who came to attend to my Mom's friend was very pleasant. She engaged in small talk about her own personal life and had a caring demeanor. Overall, I think it's a nice hospital.

She said "I have heard unless you camp out there you get no communication" for such a small hospital this is crazy. First part So.... 2nd time here w hubby for surgery ie the bad news. It's difficult because I worked in healthcare for years long ago and wanted so badly to really like all about this hospital. But our doc, Dr Proffit is excellent. Bedside manner and of course competence are so important. He has both. Nice person and doc. BUT their communication and discharge planning are beyond abysmal. I know they have contract and traveling nurses but seriously folks, I got NO call from the time we went in to Westside and then at Heart. No how he's doing, no when he will be discharged no nothing. Having been a Kaiser patient for about 30 years in So Cal I know they have systems down to a science but I literally felt like saying "oh you want him go home, well you drive him" If you won't give me the common courtesy of letting me know you fail. I parked in the new parking structure, then walked to the hospital, not a bad day for a short walk…read more Arrived at the 2nd floor where I took a number and waited till my number was called. Check in has evolved and is faster than it used to be. After check in I sat for about 10 minutes before I was taken for vitals. The staff are all very nice. I returned to the lobby, I waited about 15 minutes the audiologist took me for a thorough hearing test. Was sent back to the lobby where I waited 15-20 minutes, i'm shown into the observation room. My ENT Dr. Meiklejohn who has been taking care of my left ear for years comes in within 5 minutes. He has the best bedside manner, very gentle and explains everything as he exams you. We talked about goals for the future of my hearing and referrals were made. He walked me to the nurses station, filled a nurse in, bid me goodbye. The nurse set up my next appointment. Off I went for the short walk back to the big new parking lot. Could of taken the available cart ride. It was a beautiful morning and I was glad to walk in the fresh air. I highly recommend UNM Surgical Specialities Clinic.

This was the most superficial exam and consultation I have had by ANY MD. She was a terrible listener, and clearly skeptical of the accuracy or veracity of my description of the symptoms. She seemed distant, dismissive, and somewhat arrogant (The Goddess Complex). I have been on the Board of two large health clinics and have interacted with many highly qualified MDs.

5 Stars - A Truly Exceptional Experience…read more I can't say enough good things about the team at the Center for Vein Restoration in Albuquerque, NM. I came in with all the concerning symptoms of DVT after a long drive from Arizona, and despite my situation being stressful and unpredictable (my RV broke down, of course!), they found a way to schedule me immediately. To make things worse, I didn't realize I had crossed into a different time zone--so I showed up 30 minutes late to my appointment, flustered and rushing, only to find a full waiting room. I was mortified. But instead of turning me away or treating me coldly, the incredible ladies at the front desk showed me nothing but compassion and kindness. They understood the stress I was under and got me in right away, even though I know it must have caused a ripple effect in their schedule. They quickly ruled out a blood clot, which gave me immense relief. But what really stuck with me was the empathy, patience, and genuine care I received from every single person I interacted with. These women are absolute saints--and the kind of people you hope to encounter in healthcare but so rarely do. I have the deepest appreciation for them and their professionalism under pressure. I highly, highly recommend this clinic. They went above and beyond, and I will never forget their kindness during a really difficult day.

The recently opened University of New Mexico Adult Emergency unit and Critical Care Tower is a huge…read moreimprovement over the previous emergency room. One thing that really struck me was the security. We had to stop and be wanded and have all of our belongings searched before we were allowed to enter the waiting room and patient check-in area. It feels good knowing there are no weapons in the area and that everyone has been checked. Don't forget to leave your pepper spray in the car. There was an individual who was just kind of hanging out, laying down on one of the chairs. Security came to move him along and before long, there were 6 to 7 officers surrounding the individual who was refusing to leave. They were able to diffuse the situation and remove the gentleman without violence or harm. I was extremely impressed with the security in this new emergency unit and the professionalism of the officers. Another great feature is the mobile triage unit. In the waiting room, folks are triaged without having to get up from their chairs. Of course this is extremely helpful for people with mobility issues and the team was expeditious and professional. Another great feature are the private consultation cubbies that they have in the waiting room. The providers can come out and meet confidentially with the patient's family without having everyone in the waiting room listening. A super way to protect HIPAA. The visitor check-in staff were clear, kind, and personable, even with people who are not particularly kind to them. I felt like they actually cared about me and my family, which was really nice for a change. They also seemed to know who we were when I went back up to see if we could go back yet. I was really surprised because it had been an hour or so and many people had rolled through, but they knew right away that we were already checked in and able to go back to visit my family member. Each family is escorted to their family members' room in the back so there aren't people wandering around which again ensures greater security. My family member received exceptional care in the new emergency unit. He had Level 2 Trauma and was assessed quickly with myriad tests and imaging studies completed. We arrived at the hospital around 8 PM in the evening and after making sure my family member was being taken care of we left and were called at 4am to come to pick him up. This is remarkable considering many people, including me, have noted waiting upwards of 15 hours in the old UNMH emergency room. We were seen and my family member treated and released within eight hours! This was simply astounding to me, given how long it usually takes to be taken care of in an emergency room. The staff in the emergency unit were professional, kind, and forthcoming with information when they had it. This included a nurse and an x-ray tech with whom we interacted directly. Also, when we were trying to figure out where to go, a really nice staff member from the hospital (possibly a nurse or tech), who was taking his dinner break, kindly walked us to where we needed to go. Even when I tried to wave him off because I wanted him to eat his dinner while it was hot, he still proceeded further to make sure that we got to the right location quickly. He was also incredibly personable and kind. I feel that my family member received top-notch care by an experienced and professional team of individuals who worked together well to care of, not only my family member, but me and my other family member. At this point, I am happy to highly recommend the new University of New Mexico Hospital, emergency department and critical care tower. You can drop patients off at the Yale exit for the adult emergency unit. The pediatric emergency unit is a separate entrance and another location (see a map of UNMH online before you go). I don't have details on that since I haven't used it. I'm sorry, but I did not take pictures of the emergency department or waiting area in order to comply with HIPAA and to show general consideration for those in the waiting room. I hope you never need to go there, but if you do, you'll definitely be in good hands.

We were particularly impressed with Dr Sim, who helped us with the hard decisions. At no time did we ever think that they needed more staff on duty. the facility itself was designed and maintained better than any hostpital I've been to.
