This place is famous for having the best laksa in Melbourne, and it did not disappoint! I had the vegan laksa and it was full of flavor, not too coconutty, with two types of noodle, and veggies and tofu. Delicious. Honestly, it was better than the laksa I had in Singapore. My partner had the seafood laksa and loved it. We also had veggie spring rolls and they were good, with a really tasty dipping sauce. The place was PACKED for lunch, but there was some seating free at the back. Service was incredibly friendly and helpful even though it was so busy. Portion sizes are massive and it's so cheap for the volume of food (the vegan laksa is $10.80 and the bowl is massive). Delicious. You can see why this place is so highly-recommended. read more

This place seems to be one of those places that pretty much everybody wants to go to. Actually, it took me three tries to actually get here, the first time there was a line out the front, and the second time it was closed. Will, third time was definitely lucky because I got myself a delicious bowl of steaming Laska. Okay, they only take cash, but then again this place is pretty cheap. My fam loves coming here. Delish food. Got a seat quick multiple times. We always get some sort of laksa dish with the varying meats.

This place is a delight for all laksa lovers! We came in at dinner time and the line was epic! Supposedly this place is madly popular and one of the better place in Melbourne that serves authentic hawker-style laksa noodles. I'm happy to say that they didn't disappoint! I selected the seafood laksa as well as the duck laksa. Both broth has the same flavor profiles, which were quite good. The laksa has a nice amount of fat, but it is on the light side for my liking while lacking that dried shrimp fragrant and rich coconut creaminess. The spiciness was also rather mild, so be sure to ask for their chili oil to add that extra oooomph factor to your laksa! I also had their Laksa King fried rice and it was excellent! It has that charred taste that I craved similar to most hawker stalls in Singapore. My second time to Laksa King in Flemington and better than the first. First of all, the service is incredibly quick, assuming you're coming for their laksa. We were eating within minutes of our order. The curry broth was rich and full of flavour, with plenty of pulled chicken pieces, tofu, mixed noodles and vegetables to keep it interesting. Sat down and ordered. I got the vegetable curry laksa with roti and curry puffs to go with. The curry puffs are a must order. Usually deep fried curry puffs are oily and too crunchy/messy but these are the best fried curry puffs. they make the baked ones even look not so good. The crunch is perfect but not messy. The curry consistency on the inside is perfect. We were so impressed we ordered another 2 and they didn't disappoint. The roti was standard but cooked well. The vegetable laksa came with bok choi, tofu, mushrooms and beansprouts along with 2 DIFFERENT TYPES OF NOODLES!!! The laksa king, as recommended by some Malay friends, is at Flemington and hence you have to ride out of town to eat here. Now that negative bias is lost the moment you step in. For lovers of Malaysian food, who are aware of ingredients - belachan, coconut milk, shrimp paste etc, which can be quite pungent smelling, the place smells amazingly fresh and feels airy. Check out the glass on the ceiling that adds to this feel. Next the menu - 128 items on it OMG. So this is not the chefs table. It's a Mecca for Malaysian fare, all are available here. I ordered the duck curry laksa. It was great- duck was BBQed and was boneless- how great is that!! The curry was very fresh and flavoursome. The service was great and the food was served in no time, steaming hot. The duck laksa had hokkien noodles, bean sprouts, rice vermicelli, fried eggplant (yum!!), and fried tofu (looks like they fry their own silken tofu, as opposed to the fluffy tofu) If I got to nitpick, the noodles could be cooked some more!! read more

I don't remember my friend's exact words, but that was her suggestion after I told her that I had never tried Malaysian food. So we went, and saw the place full of people when we got there. That was a very good sign. The place was clean and the waiters were nice. I ordered the fish head curry laksa. It was great! There is nothing I have eaten that tastes even a little bit similar to this! The flavors were so rich and concentrated, making a very unique noodle soup. The roti we ordered absorbed all the flavors very well when I dipped it into the soup. My only complaint was... the fish head had too many bones! Obviously, I'm not blaming the restaurant on this. I hate eating something with bones, because it totally gets in the way of my enjoyment of the food. I feel a little silly, because I should have realized that the fish head would have an extensive skeleton underneath it. Oh well... I was complaining to my friend a lot about this while I was eating, and I kind of felt like complaining here as well. Please ignore me! Laksa King is one of those places I hadn't been to for years, but still raved about, so I thought it time to return and check that it was still awesome. It is. This was my first time in the bigger, shiny new premises. It's like another world compared to the dank old place, with stylish wooden tables and modern light fixtures. Very swish for a fast turn over restaurant. We only had to wait 5 minutes for a table but I had skipped lunch in anticipation of the laksa goodness, so I was STARVING. As a result, we over ordered. For two people we had Vietnamese pork spring rolls, vegetarian laksa, nasi goreng and plain roti. It doesn't sound like that much food, but the serving sizes were truly epic. And the taste - I can't even begin to describe the amazingness... As my friend said, they really deserve the 'King' in their name. In the end we realized we weren't going to make a dent in the food no matter how good it was, so focused on getting through the laksa (soaking up the broth with roti - yum) and got a take away container to take the nasi goreng home. An amazing experience, arrived 15 minutes before opening, saw both couches and entrance full, thought that was takeaway line and soon found out all waiting to be seated at 5pm (Sat) Once 5pm sounded, all of us were seated, seats about 250 and it was ful in 15 minutes, amazing Laksa (Duck) at $14 see picture. I was disappointed in entree Peking Duck (never order a Chinese dish from a Malaysian venue, as duck was dry and panckae was dry too not moist. Water bottle was just emptied and put at end of table and it was whisked away by staff and replaced. Amazing service, downfall is cash only......can get out of there for under $35 for two with take home containers as well. read more

A longer wait to eat at this place on a week day however this was the best! I went to visit my friends in Melbourne during the Melbourne Cup. Tons of people were all dressed up and trying to catch a meal in between the event. I think we ended up ordering 6 dishes + roti for 4. I can tell you that they do provide generous portions and is not for the pansy small eater. I regret to inform you that all the plates plus the roti was entirely consumed in 1 sitting. I don't know whether we should have been embarrassed or whether we can proudly announce that we have defeated our conquest. Notable dishes include the Curry Laska, Roti (with every meal is a must!), another seafood noodle dish, and nasi lemak that was to die for. Maybe it's cheating to come somewhere called Laksa King and not order Laksa. But you know what? I don't like like Laksa. There. I said it. It's far too rich for me and I prefer my asian soup on the lighter brothier style (ie. Tom Yum, Ramen or Pho) Luckily this place has so many non-laksa options and I happily shared nasi lemak and hainan chicken rice and a little roti. Washed down with teh tarik, I was one happy girl. It certainly wasn't the best interpreations fo these dishes I've ever had, but they were pretty good and I'd happily visit again. Service is fast, friendly(ish) and meals hit the table within 10 minutes of ordering. Be sure to book, because the crowds line up to get in here. read more

As the name suggests, you should probably bow at the feet of this place! On my first visit we had just ordered for takeaway and there was a line out the door and people crammed into the waiting area to be seated. But the kitchen is obviously well adjusted to high demand because we left with our orders in less than 10 minutes. The laksa is freakin delicious and the serving is huge. I think it costs something like $10 or $11 but you deserve a medal if you manage to finish it. Needless to say, I've been back several times to eat in and to takeaway. It's great for a midweek meal. The earlier you get there the less time you'll wait for a table. The staff are on the ball though and you do get that feeling like they want you out of there as soon as you can't fit any more in but it's well worth it! read more

It is always a bit challenging to visit all of the places that you either read about in the usual press that are a bit inconvenient to get to. Laksa King in Flemington is one of those places only because I didn't want to take the train to Newmarket to enjoy a laksa of all things when the cost of the fare would equal that of the food in some cases. However I used my latest trip to Costco to give me an incentive to make a detour to Flemington so I could finally ascertain what the hype with this place is all about. Frankly I was shocked to find such a clean restaurant that was air conditioned where the manager not only takes you to your seat but will take your order and bring your food. He was all business and I appreciated that. My first impression with the brick wall, plants and the types of tables and chairs was that I was at a Brisbane RSL however the extensive menu of Malaysian and Chinese inspired fare removed those thoughts in quick fashion. There is no pomp and circumstance here. The chicken roti rolls that we ordered to start appeared in about five minutes. They were much larger and flavoursome than I expected them to be. Once again probably because I went with low expectations, I was easily impressed in every area that I find important. They are known for their laksa, so I ordered the king prawn variation and what was delivered after a reasonable about of time was just massive in both quantity and taste. The kitchen took the time to remove the heads, tails and the poop chute from the prawns which I found to be a nice touch and once again was not expected. The laksa was a cornucopia of flavours and products so every taste was slightly different but also special. I was impressed and I am not much of a consumer of laksa. Leaving is a bit of a chore though as the server, in our case the manager, needed to announce what table we were at so we could pay at the kiosk. They do not except credit cards but conveniently have a generic ATM right next to the kiosk for your use. It is quite clever of them so they can operate a cash-based business and pass on the fees to the customer directly to withdrawal cash instead of the banks charging the business for the pleasure of accepting my used and scratched American Express. It is quite clever of them and fortunately between us we found legitimate currency and tendered it so that we could make an exit without guilt or any surcharge for a cash withdrawal. Clean, efficient, different tastes and a substantial amount of food would get me to go back and actually take the train for the pleasure next time and not simply just use the fact that I was visiting Costco an excuse to frequent the area. read more

Their laksa is really good. Two types of noodles, vermicelli and a thicker yellow noodle. Great soup base and toppings. We also got their chicken and rice dish. Pretty bland, definitely skip. The fried anchovies and other small accompaniments to the nasi lemak were nice. The fragrant coconut'pandan rice was a marvel for the senses itself. Wicked laksa! This place is always stupidly busy, so expect a wait time (not too long though - on average it's been about 10-15 mins). Ordering the laksa is a given - but try some of the other menu items too, perhaps to share while everyone orders their own laksa. The Roti Channai is great as an entree, as are the dumplings. You just have to check out the colourful menu and you'd already be ahead of the curve, from very well concocted rice dishes to classic laksa items and tempting noodles. The only note that I add is they don't have eftpos facilities. But they do have a resident ATM machine that charges $2 for each transaction. Ever since living in Singapore for a year in 2007, I've been on a great search to find good laksa in the states (there is none--it's just not the same!). I've been hearing rave reviews about Laksa King from local friends in Melbourne and couldn't wait to get my fill during this visit. Despite all the hype, I'm going to conclude that the laksa here is just adequate. The broth/soup I thought fell a little flat and one dimensional.. Not enough spice or depth to the flavor. I ordered the vegetable laksa, and I had some of the fish laksa as well. A decent meal, just wasn't blown away. Also ordered the roti, which was good, but again, I've had better. It's literally the most overrated place ever. The queue is quite long and the place is really mediocre. Anyway, I waited for about 20mins for 2 person seating and end up sitting next to a couple, which is quite awkward. I reckon you end up getting these kind of seats if you're eating with a friend. There is not much space with the person next to you. You can hear everything they're saying etc. The food is actually really cheap though. However, I realised how much MSG they've put in their laksa. It's enormous size and filling but again, it doesn't taste that great. For Australian standard, it's pretty good, but still very average according to Malaysian standard laksa. Which probably why you don't see as many Malaysians/Singaporeans here. The drinks are really bad, it's very artificial and not even authentic. The teh tarik is more of a Thai tea than actual teh tarik and sadly I don't think the customers really care about that. The 'teh tarik' tastes like Thai tea from the package, really weird sugary taste. The service is mediocre as you'd expect. In conclusion, IT IS NOT THAT GREAT PLACE. Laksa King is a superb dining experience and one of the most popular and best value establishments in Melbourne. It's high popularity says it all. Voted as the best cheap eat in Melbourne. Aussies seem to love laksa. You feel like you've had something slightly exotic and it's large and full of flavour. It took me about 20 minutes to eat a laksa - it really is a hearty meal. Laksa King is a welcoming place, right from when the friendly staff welcome you when you arrive. The fit out is smart and modern with grungy concrete floor, large naked frosty globe lighting, a row of bamboo and cool art work on the walls. The roof is a kind of red ochre colour and there are smart timber tables and chairs. Laksa King prides itself on being a well run operation and there are few obvious weaknesses. Laksa King is obviously known for its laksa. I've been wanting to try the laksa since when working in Moonee Ponds where Laksa King was the talk of the town. The menu features Curry Laksa as the house specialty although there are many other menu options if you so desire. The waitress recommended the Combination Curry Laksa to me so that is what I ordered. Some people compare the laksa here to what they have experienced in Asia. I've been to Asia many times but never had laksa there. I lived with a Malaysian family earlier and life and can never remember having laksa. The only laksa I can compare it with is from the restaurants I've experienced in Australia. For mine, the laksa at Laksa King is superb. It gets a tick for flavour with so many fresh ingredients in one large bowl of laksa. I'm not sure how they can make a profit - it would cost me twice this much to try and make it at home. A large bowl of quality laksa for under $10 is amazing. But full marks for tasty juicy chicken chunks, large quality prawns, bits of fish, tofu, a large piece of eggplant, two kinds of noodles and a sublime coconut sauce. Laksa needs to have a bit of kick and Laksa King delivers with just the right amount of chilli in the sauce. With cutlery at your table you can use the chopsticks for noodles and other ingredients and then scoop the sauce in the deep spoon. Overall I was extremely happy with the laksa at Laksa King. Presentation is superb and the laksa was delicious. I noticed Laksa King also has the Good Value Banquet for $26.80 a head and it looks like a substantial amount of food. We visited this established after having received a recommendation from friends. We were not disappointed! The meals are served quickly and are very tasty. The satay sauce which accompanies the charcoal chicken skewers was the best I've had for some time. My chicken laksa was simply superb. Plenty of heat in the soup with lots of chicken pieces throughout. The servings are large so if you can't finish your meal, take away containers are offered. So I didn't have any laksa on my maiden visit here. Just didn't feel like it but my dining companion wanted a combination noodle and this was nice as close by to where we were at the time. Granted, a crowd is always a great sign of the popularity of the food. Good mix of Aussie families, young and old and plenty of Malaysian groups were dining there when rocked up, being just two people it took a grand total of five minutes before we were beckoned to an empty table. Yes there is always a queue, so if you are more than a couple that night it's better to call ahead and book a table. Or do a phone order for takeaway. If only I lived closer! Service was prompt and warm considering in a lot of frantic restaurants it would take a backseat. Our meals came pretty quickly. Whilst my dinner date had noodles that were amazing and chock full of prawns too, and our entrée of chicken satay sticks were delish and authentically Malaysian, my Hainanese chicken rice was below average. Whilst the chilli ginger sauce was nice and piquant, the chicken on a separate serving plate was cold and the bowl of rice was somewhat too. Now, I have had the privilege on many occasions to saviour the most authentic Hainanese chicken rice in Malaysia (this is THE best place to have it don't let anybody tell you otherwise), this fell way short of being decent. It should have been served warm at the very least especially considering the air conditioned interior.
