I had reservations last year for the snowmobile drag- races. I had put a deposit ($131) down a few months before the event. Unfortunately, it was canceled, and I was not given an option for a refund only to transfer the deposit to the next year. I called a couple weeks ago to check on my reservation and had said I would need to adjust the dates a bit. I would call back and let them know. I called back last Wednesday (February 5th) to make the adjustments, and the lady said "your room has been cancelled" I could not believe what I just heard. I was told I would receive a call that day. I did not get a call back. I called Thursday again and was assured I would get a call back. I did not. I called Friday and asked for Ken and he had no answers for me. He said he would get back to me by Saturday. No call back. Now I'm very upset! They said they emailed me. I no longer use that email and have been slowly transferring to a new email. I have had a deposit on this room for over a year. Why was I not called to confirm before it was just cancelled and given to someone else? I told Ken that the right thing to do is to call the people that got my room and explain the situation and give the room back to us. I have been preparing for this trip for months! The general manager finally called the following Monday to inform me there was nothing they could do and they would not refund my deposit. I will never stay there now. read more

I just returned from a four day fishing trip and I stayed at Lakewoods Resort. I stayed in Cabin 631 (I believe) with six other guys. The cabin was clean, the beds were comfortable and the bathrooms appeared to be recently updated. There was plenty of hot water for showers- no complaints from the other guys. I ate several meals at the Lodge and the food was piping hot and DELICIOUS!!! I also rented a fishing boat from the marina and Bob was EXTREMELY helpful in taking the time to show me all the functions of the boat. Olivia was awesome too when it came time to return the boat. I can't wait till next October to stay here again!!!!! read more

It certainly has the northern WI woodsy feel! Stayed here a couple nights ago. Quite rustic but nice. Don't expect cell phone service if you come here, because you're not gonna find it. You can find Wi-Fi if you stand in a corner of the lobby and tilt your head at the correct angle. That said, it's a very pretty place. I had a room next to the pool. What is it about me that attracts rooms next to the pool? Perhaps because I love the sound of children screaming until 11 at night? OK, maybe not so much. However, I will say the way the room was laid out buffered the pool noise very well. The bed is actually at the back of the room, and there is a sliding glass door that opens out to the lake. Quite a lovely view, and not that noisy. read more

I wanted to like this place. Lots of great reviews. The lodge rooms are in desperate need of a makeover. It's extremely loud at night with kids screaming and running around til 11pm. So don't stay in one of those rooms unless you like loud, old rooms that smell like an extremely old library and humid chlorine. The staff could have been nicer. God forbid we asked for extra towels or toilet paper. And there is no daily cleaning service so we kinda needed extra towels and TP. Dining was very SLOW. We waited about an hour and 45 for food. The cheese curds were pretty good though and the waitress was nice. The boat we rented for 2 days for $560 was disgusting. Very old, dirty and falling apart. Really disappointed in that since we spent a lot of money on it. But the overall outdoor appearance of the place was very nice and inviting. I just wish they updated it. My friend and I and our 4 kids were stranded Saturday night on our snowmobiles in an ice storm. I was injured by a falling tree. We came across Lakewoods and Kari and her staff were very caring and accommodating to our needs. I will just post the email I sent to management after our visit, to which they couldn't even bother to respond. Absolutely horrible. "On January 6 I used the online reservation system to book accommodations for this past weekend, January 27-29. I specifically was looking for a room with an en suite whirlpool/hot tub as this was to be a weekend of snowshoeing and relaxation and nothing is better than a private whirlpool after a good day in the woods. As is shown on the attached screen shot, I reserved a Hot Tub Suite, AKA Whirlpool Suite as shown on your website. The email receipt I received made no mention of a room number or a room type, so I had no way to double check to ensure I was getting the room I booked. Upon arrival Friday evening, we got into our room, and there was no whirlpool. I didn't bother to complain about it as I couldn't find my confirmation that was what I booked, and I assumed I had somehow booked the wrong room. Upon returning home, I found the screenshot of my booking, and I had indeed booked a whirlpool suite, room 411. Instead we were given room 407. While it's bad enough that we were not given the room I booked, room 407 was a bad experience in itself. The carpet is disgusting, dirty and stained. The heat doesn't work well at all, the wall unit produces at best lukewarm air, the electric fireplace is nearly useless, and someone decided that the baseboard unit in the bedroom should be wired in with the defective wall unit, so if the wall unit is turned up high to try (in vain) to make the living room comfortable, the bedroom becomes uncomfortably warm. The only heat in the bathroom is the single heat lamp in the ceiling fixture, and it doesn't produce much heat, so the bathroom was freezing cold at all times, and the doors wouldn't stay open so that we could even try to get some heat in there from the bedroom - there was no heat to be brought in from the living room, that's for sure. The exhaust fan in the bathroom was so loud it was like having a diesel truck idling in the room. The patio door was barely able to be forced halfway open, and then stuck so badly I wasn't sure we'd get it closed again. The bedroom door has broken hinges and has to be lifted up by the handle in order to close it, and the door on the closet in the living room barely operates. The breakfast bar would be kind of a nice touch, but with only one bar stool, only suitable for a single traveler, and it's doubtful a single traveler would book a suite. It's nice that there was an in-room coffee pot, but there was a single coffee packet (and a decaf). With no housekeeping service, a 2-night booking should be given 2 coffee packets. I know, I could go to the desk and get another, but I shouldn't have to, that's not a resort experience. I could overlook the crack in the ceiling and the rusty drop ceiling supports, but then again, you're charging premium rates so I shouldn't have to. Additionally, there was a piece of broken glass or mirror on the floor behind the toilet, left over from some previous guest. It's probably still there. Friday night between 10 - 11 PM, about a dozen snowmobiles parked right outside our bedroom window, and most of them were up and at it early Saturday morning. I like snowmobiles and snowmobilers for the most part, and I don't blame them. Hotel management, however, should have sense enough to block off the area right outside a bedroom window and not allow snow machine or any other parking right there. There was a sled parked literally less than a foot from the window. Had I known I wouldn't have a whirlpool suite, I would never have booked with you for the weekend, and if I were going to, had I known the poor condition of the room and how uncomfortable it would be, I would never have booked at the rate I was charged. I feel I'm due a refund of at least a substantial amount of the room charge. " read more

Wow - lots of hate for Lakewoods here! Our experience was pretty good while staying here for a family wedding but you've got to understand what you're getting into: 1. Pool/lodge rooms. DO NOT book these. They are outdated, musty and not very nice. The doors to poolside room are literally 6' away from the pool edge so you'll get all the noise, smell and humidity in your room. 2. Condos are hit/miss. All are independently owned so they vary in decor and amenities. My advice is to request photos ahead of time and confirm for a specific unit vs. a generic 2-bedroom. I can fully recommend #218 as very updated, clean and comfortable with a huge TV + 2 fireplaces. Our family had 3 other condos which ranged fom "kabin kitsch" to "somewhat outdated" to "downright awful" so it's critical to know which unit you'll be getting. 3. Wifi also is hit/miss. Sometimes it worked well for brief periods but mostly it didn't. 4. The restaurant is "meh". It's ok for bar food but if you want a good meal drive about 2 miles to Garmisch. 5. The bar is fun, especially is Kerry is bartening. He makes a mean old fashioned. 6. There is a golf course, some fairly rundown tennis courts, a nice small outdoor pool (heated!) and a decent indoor pool with a big hot tub. Great for families, but don't expect luxury. In short, Lakewoods had it's heyday in the 60's-70's and could use some updating. Enjoy it for what it is - a time capsule to "the old up north". read more

Such a great stay! We stayed for 3 nights in one of the cabins and it was lovely. The cabin was right on the water with a private pier which was great for fishing and boating. The pool and hot tub were such a bonus for the chilly evenings and loved that the bar/restaurant are right there. Highly recommend! read more

The food is amazing, make sure to try the Prime Rib on Tuesday or Saturday nights! The Friday fish fry is also super tasty! We come up north in the fall and the last couple of years have gone to Lakewoods for dinner. This year was the last. Spending 19.00 on a meal and not even a choice of salad dressing. If you want that you have to pay additional 1.95. Really?? Then our rolls were served on the salad plate. My husband had the walleye which had no taste and didn't seem to be very fresh. It had that freezer taste. I had the fried shrimp with a lot of soggy breading. Lakewoods needs a lot of updating. Won't be going back. read more

Another "Up North" time warp!! Hey 40-somethingers! Do you remember when we were kids and our parents used to take us here because it was one of the newest and nicest resorts on the lake, AND it only cost $2.00 to use the pool as a guest? Well, you'll be happy to know that it is exactly like you had remembered it from that 1978 vacation!! OK, that's sounds like sarcasm and I don't wish to totally bash this place. Truly this place is a time warp. Its just like all the other resorts I visited as a kid. Many of those are gone though, and while other resorts on Lake Namokagen have come and gone, Lakewoods is still here. Just keep your expectations low and you won't be disappointed. Sure, the "main building" hasn't been renovated since the Carter Administration (if ever) and the inside pool might be carrying three different types of hepatitis (or eColi, the test results haven't come back yet) and yes, the food here is probably the worst in the area, just remember "you get what you pay for!" There is a great wilderness golf course (seriously!), lots of views of the lake, and lots of places to park your pontoon boat (that's what she said). We rented one of the privately-owned condos and were not disappointed. Other people in out family were however, disappointed with theirs. Insist on pictures of the condo you are booking. Because these are privately owned, no two are alike. What ever you do, for God's sake, don't stay in one of the pool rooms. They looked nasty! OK, there is no glitz and glamor here, but you're Up North people, it doesn't matter! It sure beats the KOA on highway 63. If you need the bright lights and 5 star restaurants, go to Vegas! read more

Structural problems. Our room was super wet and moldy (there was a 1-foot diameter of white fluff growing on the wood panel wall next to the bed). The bathroom fan turned on but was clogged so the steam from showering had nowhere to go. The toilet also clogged easily, and the humidity in the entire room was so high that the windows steamed up on the inside. I had a cardboard shoebox that felt soft and damp in the room. There was a swimming pool just outside the room door that contributed to the humid conditions. The pillows smelled strongly of mildew. There was no microwave! (?!) I've stayed in several cheap hotels in the past two years. All in all, the condition of this place was worse than many of the $60-70 places I've seen. This review would be 1 star due to the price point and the health hazard - especially for people with mold allergies (which we don't have, yet the mold still affected both of us). The cleaning crew was wonderful and did a great job with overall upkeep with things that can be remedied, so the extra star goes to them. read more

My experience at Lakewoods was not a good one. It was Saturday, January 26th. There were four in our party. We were taken care of right away and our food came in a timely manner. I ordered the Shrimp with garlic mashed potatoes. Everything was good until I took my third bite of potatoes. There, in my mouth, was a long hair! My husband got the waitress. She took the hair and when she came back she apologized and offered to make me another plate. I said no and to just comp it. Sorry but I didn't want anything else from that kitchen. Another person in our party ordered the same potatoes and couldn't finish them. When our friend went to pay he was told by the hostess that I should have left the hair in the potatoes so they could have seen it. That sounded like an insinuation to me and I called the hostess on it and she said a few words and walked away. I believe the whole situation was handled terribly. I would give ZERO stars if I could.... My wife and I stayed here for my brother-in-laws wedding in August and thou the ceremony was wonderful, the resort was anything but... We stayed in the condos that you can rent out, thou we had family and friends also stay at the lodge, and neither experience was pleasant. For starters the Condo was dilapidated and run down, which is OK but the price per night should reflect that and it does not. Additionally, the power went out in our condo. We discovered this after coming back from dinner, around 9pm. I went to the front desk to ask for assistance, no one was around, but there was a sign that said 'see bartender?' (which is odd, since I am sure people check-in later all the time...you know being 4 hours away from civilization and all???) I find the bartender who shrugs and says I dont know, maintenance is done for the night. I asked if she could call the manager, and she informed me she was the manager and walked away. I followed her and asked her to phone the owners of the condo....which she did...no answer on the other line (prob sleeping, lucky bastards). She then informed me she was VERY busy in the bar and needed to tend to the patrons....excuse me, wtf??? She told me she would try again in 30min. I explained to her that was unacceptable seeing how it was almost 10pm and we needed to go to bed because there was a wedding the following day, at which point she drug a cook out to the lobby area to try and fix the problem. Needless to say he was of little help, except filling my ear with bullshit about how everybody loves the Lakewoods, how they got a real fine establishment up here...blah blah blah...I mean are you seriously saying that crap at this point in the conversation???? It was not until I demanded he call the owner of Lakewoods to square this issue away that anything got fixed. 30min later the owner shows up and he is able to secure maintenance to correct whatever the problem was....unfortunately whatever was done to fix the problem of no power, totally destroyed the AC and we were left without AC for 3 days on one of the hottest weekends in Wisconsin. No apology, no fixing, just a shrug and a blank look. My wife's parents also had terrible customer service when trying to change rooms and when they had logistical questions for the staff...too many to explain here. The point is THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On top of all of the inconveniences we went through that weekend there was never an apology or any sign of concern for our well being, even thou my in-laws were spending a great deal of money for the wedding festivities and bringing in a lot of business for Lakewoods. The icing on the cake is that about a month later my in-laws were notified that their credit cards had been compromised. They didnt think much of it until they saw some friends from that wedding weekend and they got to talking and they too had a compromised credit cards. So my wife's parents called some other friends that were at Lakewoods for the wedding...turns out THEY ALL HAD THEIR CREDIT CARD INFORMATION STOLEN AND THE CARDS HAD BEEN COMPROMISED! What is so outlandish about this situation is it was not until MY in-laws contacted Lakewoods regarding this identity theft that Lakewoods even considered acknowledging the situation....again no apology, didn't bother to notify anyone who may have been affected by this credit card fraud, didn't bother to mention that it had been happening before the weekend we got there, didn't bother to mention the FBI was involved....I mean WTF!!! So thanks Lakewoods for pretty much nothing....the weather was great, the ceremony was wonderful and the scenery was breathtaking, but the Lakewoods Resort sucked balls, a total RIP-OFF!!!! I stayed here for a convention, and was glad that I was not footing the bill for the "condo" we stayed in. If I was footing the bill I would have packed up my stuff and moved to another hotel or resort as soon as I stepped foot in the place. Like the other reviewer stated, this is idyllic if you are looking for a retro setting for a family vacation. We stayed in the Hemlock, in a lower level condo. The setting around the condo was beautiful with the lake and the woods. If it was summer, a pool would have been right outside our door. However, as soon as we walked into the condo it smelled musty and like old sheets that had not been washed in a long time. You could actually see the watermarks on the walls where the condo had flooded. There were potato chips on the floor in the living room, pretzels on the floor under the table in kitchen, cobwebs and spiders everywhere, blood stains on the radiator in one of the bedrooms, the shower/tub was peeling paint, and we even found a prescription pill under the bed in what would be considered the kids bedroom (it had two sets of bunk beds). We called the owner of the resort the next morning and left a message saying we were not happy with our condo and that it was filthy. He never returned our phone call or stopped to talk to us. However, when we arrived back in our room later that day the condo smelled clean, it was just a front though since the chips were still there along with all the other stuff. The place claims to have wifi, since you cannot get cell phone reception. However, the only place we picked up wifi was either in our car outside the condo, or within the doorway of the condo. Even in the lodge itself, where the convention took place, was very spotty. So don't count on having wifi. read more

So, I grew up vacationing at Lakewoods every summer with my family. My Dad would pop in a Lake Wobegon tape and we would drive 10 hours. WE LOVED Lakewoods and thought it was "high class" back in the day. Good news is they haven't changed a THING since the 80s. Bad news is they haven't changed a thing, including any kind of update or remodel to any.thing.in.the.joint. Literally, a time capsal. So, for my parents 60th birthday party we decided to be fancy and reserve one of the houses on the lake. We are all really pumped to go back. So, picture this, it's a warm day in August. We all arrive at the house and I immediately call the front desk, "Hi, excuse me, the air conditioning is not on and I can't find the controls" ****crickets***......I just heard silence on the other end and then "There is no air conditioning".....whoops. Here is the bit, you are "UP NORTH", who cares about all the frills of a resort, am I correct? I see a lot of people hatin' on Lakewoods but I still appreciate the charm that is still there--- you gotta search for it but it's there. For example, I took my nephews to do tie-dyed shirts one night. There is fun stuff like that going on every night for the kids. The lake and forest that surrounds the area is just beautiful. The food was really good too. Nice bar with pool table and arcade as well. I will definitely come back for dinner next time I'm in the area, and would consider staying here too because the grounds were well taken care of and it seemed like a nice place. read more

Can I give "Zero Stars"? Run...don't walk away from this place. My wife & I along with family and friends booked "cabins" and a condo at Lakewoods for our idyllic 'Up North' wedding accommodations. While our wedding was absolutely perfect (performed off-site), the accommodations and staff were less than acceptable. I wouldn't stay here again for free..... The reservations for our wedding party were screwed up not once, not twice, but three times. The last time was after we checked in for the group and was told that yet another "computer error" would force us to switch rooms once again. The front desk staff was less than accommodating or sorry for the multiple mistakes, never taking ownership or apologizing for the mess-ups. Mind you, I'm standing there with my fiance, who's in tears because of their ineptitude. Again no apologies, just excuses. We finally get the cabins figured out, only to find them in horrible, and I mean HORRIBLE condition. Now I realize we didn't book the Four Seasons, but the carpet was very dirty and stained, the furniture looked like it was stolen from a Frat House in 1985, and the moldy/mildew smell was so thick that our housekeepers actually handed my two cans of Lysol to spray down the rooms. Now that I think of it, the Housekeeping Staff was the only bright spot of this place. Both women apologized to me when they delivered the towels (which were missing), and said how sorry they were that we had such a bad experience at the front desk. Management could learn something from these ladies. We just received the itemized receipt the other day and I noticed that the 'credit' they had promised for our trouble was missing....big shocker. They can keep the 120 bucks, I don't feel like hearing a million more excuses. Maybe they'll use the $$ to buy some paint or cleaning supplies, but I don't plan on visiting again to find out. With so many resorts, lodges, and cabins available for rent in NW Wisconsin, surely you can find better than this, especially for the price. read more

The best of the trip was the Atv rental and we got away for the day to visit trails and local businesses. Sorry, but if we return to WI for the adventures, it won't be here. I am just reviewing the food as I was here supporting my husband while he participated in the Stubborn Mule Adventurous Race. I had both lunch and dinner and honestly, Country Buffet or Wendy's has better quality food. For lunch I had the fish tacos. There was about 2 oz of fish in each taco, fried as supposed to grilled, how I ordered them. The side salad was discusting. The lettuce was wilted and yellow while the dressing was a very cheap quality raspberry vinegarette. For dinner I had the prime rib. I started the meal by asking the server what grade meat the prime rib was. She looked at me like I had a male appendage growing out of my forehead and said "what do you mean grade, it's prime rib...i don't know, you know the good stuff." Well a bit of education for you Lakewood's servers (since your chef or manager is probably too lazy to teach you, obviously), prime rib is the CUT of the beef and grade is the QUALITY of meat. It's a simple question that does not warrant being snarky when asked especially at a place that touts itself as "fine dining". I spent 13 years in true fine dining, knowing the grade of meat that you serve is the most basic elements to know. Annoying. The dinner salad was the same nasty salad as lunch only served in a large bowl that server could not be bothered to serve. The prime rib was choice grade I am guessing but had no seasoning. It was at least not too chewy. The wild rice was over cooked and the vegetated were the frozen-in-a-bag type. So, for $22, you can get "fine dining" done cheap style. Since this is the only option up here for miles, I give it 2 stars. read more

My husband and I spent 3 nights and very much enjoyed our stay. We booked the room that day so we probably got one of the least desirable but I was satisfied over all. Like many of the reviews state...the rooms need some updating. I loved the amenities of the resort. We ate most of our meals there so tried both the bar and restaurant. We were happy with both. I'd give it 4 stars on the food also. All staff were very pleasant and helpful but the young man who seemed to oversee the marina was exceptional. We plan on returning with our kids next summer. If they updated and made sure everything worked properly...it would get 5 stars easily. read more

Advertising states this place is a must stop, however a visit here proves otherwise. During a busy snowmobile weekend we ventured here only to find rude staff, unbelievably slow service, poor quality food and a lackluster atmosphere. The staff all seemed new, not trained or as if they just didn't care. Burgers were clearly frozen and came wth a side of withered lettuce - and don't bother asking for any type of cheese unless you prefer it slapped on cold atop a very well done patty. The cheese curds might have been good had they laid off the salt shaker. They hadn't a clue what type of beer they had, it took several waitresses digging in multiple coolers to locate some warm basic type brews. I definitely would not recommend going out of your way to stop here. Sad because it could have been a good experience - sometimes all it takes is allowing your wait staff to carry around poor attitudes. I can over look other things but being treated as if our experience means nothing is not acceptable - whether stopping in for an 8 course meal or 1 cocktail - your staff is the face of your company and should always be on point. read more

Came here with average expectations. Made our reservation months ago and called two weeks in advance to confirm. Quoted rate for the boat changed upon arrival. Beds were horribly uncomfortable and sauna broken. Restaurant served good meals but the restaurant staff was slow in noticing you. The golf course was great and the pontoon we rented was also great (even though my quoted rate for its use more than doubled with no apologies for the error on their part even though it was quoted both at the time of the original reservation and the confirmation). Great weekend of snowmobiling on the best trails in the country!! Lakewoods resort has all the amenities you would want - nice lodging, good food, nightlife in the bar at the lodge and a few other nearby bars and restaurants on the trails. Staff was good -- good service and accommodating. Marina/shop on the lake provides gas, bait, and light mechanic resources. Beautiful trail riding through the national forest! read more

Terrible!!! I would highly suggest rethinking your accommodations! The restaurant part is expensive for what you get. The owner, Kathy, is not friendly nor accommodating. I have nothing positive to say about our experience! When we confronted her with a sistuation, she simply replied, "I'm sorry but I hope you enjoyed your expereince." Are you kidding me - of course we didn't enjoy our experience and we will never be back - EVER!! Zero customer service skills. PS - this would be a zero star if it allowed you to pick it! read more

If you are looking for an idyllic setting with a bit of nostalgia for a family vacation, this might be the place. This resort has been in the family for generations and is situated in the middle of a National Forest. It is a beautiful lake and is far enough away that you cannot get Yelp on your iphone. The town home we stayed in had plenty of room to spread out and three bathrooms. Okay, now for the critique. I have stayed here five times. It seems as though it is run with a combination of resort owned hotel rooms, private owned condos managed by the resort, and town homes which I am not sure what the arrangement is. The specific one we stayed in was Woodroe II and was the top half of a town home a drive away from the resort. The rating is for this unit only, because I have had better experiences here. It felt like we were renting a frat house or college duplex in Madison or Iowa City. The carpet was filthy and the top of the refrigerator has not been wiped off for a year. You get the picture. The shower door fell off one day and the hot water quit coming. The maintenance call did fix the water quickly and the door did get put on (temporarily). The screen doors did not slide and there was no air conditioning. But, hey, the kids will remember the lake, the campfire, the bike rides in the woods, fishing, and playing cards. Maybe it is only the adults who need to lighten up and remember why we are there. It just seems like when you pay a month's rent for a place to stay for a week that it could be clean and the maintenance should be kept up to par. Maybe the family has tried to expand too far. I will probably look for another place to rent next time or maybe rent one on VRBO and just drive the boat over to enjoy the resort, tennis, and golf. read more

Beautiful location. Customer Service was good but it was REALLY run down. It wasn't even maintained properly. Patio door screens hanging by one roller, no a/c in one of the rooms. Musty smell in the rooms around the pool. Pool was murky. Trash, weeds, old air conditioning units right on the patios. We were here for a conference for work and we're told we would have WIFI. Most of our cell phones didn't ha e service so we're counting on the wifi. Only if you were in the lobby could you get consistent wifi. Even the conference rooms in the basement had very spotty wifi. Very Frustrating. Couldn't do my job. Don't say you have wifi unless you have a strong connection and it's in every room. Don't let a business have a conference there unless you tell them about the wifi. Bartender was Great!! Ken was great! Housekeeping was great. If you put some money into the place your reviews would not be so bad. read more

The setting is beautiful. But the lodge and its rooms were awful. Everything was rather shabby: musty, damp rooms that smelled of chlorine, fixtures crooked on the walls, wallpaper peeling off the walls. The screen door on our room was falling off. The pool was over-chlorinated, and what appeared to be sand and bits of toilet paper/paper towel could be seen on the pool bottom. The hot tub was merely warm. On the up side, the walleye on the breakfast menu was amazing. But, alas, I won't be going back. read more
