Be careful letting smaller kids near the pond. I have seen a kid slip and fall in. He was okay and got out, but after seeing that I keep an extra eye on my kids if we want to get close to the pond. They have a sand volleyball court. Lots of walking trails. Even behind the trees where a retention pond is. They have covered pavilions with picnic tables and bbq pits. Also love that the playground is covered and kids can play in the shade. That's a MUST for Texas parks!

Super impressed by this park!…read more They've done a really great job with adding beautiful manmade waterfalls and such. The walking trail is very pleasant. FYI: the trail is paved and stroller accessible. On the way back, we took another trail which was dirt and had no issue taking the stroller on that as well. Nice playground for kids. There are bathrooms just past the playground. I initially thought they were closed because the gate had the lock still on it (in a locked position) but luckily, someone advised me that they were actually open. So, don't go by appearances and actually tug on the door! There are two relatively small parking lots that fill up quickly but there is also street parking available.

They have a huge covered dirt arena and another large indoor climate controlled building for events. There's also some sports fields and pond but we mainly come for the playground and splash pad. We love that it's free and has a lot to offer. It's all completely paved, even the walkways connecting the splash pad to the bathrooms and to the playground. There's also a large covered pavilion with picnic tables for moms to sit and watch the kids.

However, the road was blocked with a metal gate. Get out of town. Why? Well, the entire park was not well marked. So expect "private driveway" wherever you are going. I considered this was an escape from town living. I had a smooth drive on Interstate Highway 69 in a steamy hot Saturday afternoon driving from Houston. The playground is one of a kind, my kids love it. There is a small pond with lily pads covering the top and beautiful coi fish. The pond has a railed walking path through it that has a few benches throughout. Catch and release fishing is allowed. There are several alligator warning signs however I've never seen any myself but I spoke to a couple people there that say they have in fact spotted the alligators near the water a time or two. This is a nice place to have a birthday party because there is a covered pavilion with picnic tables underneath and plenty of space for games and even to hang a piñata. There are bathrooms with water fountains and they are always clean and well-kept. Definitely recommend this park.

That said, Alexander Deussen was an important geologist who basically donated the land on which this park is situated. What sets this park apart from most parks in the metropolis is the expansive acreage, dark green verdant scenery, forest-like quality and its proximity to Lake Houston. Most parks in Houston have the concrete jungle as a backdrop or, in the case of Memorial Park, are located near highways or major thoroughfares. However, Deussen Park is one of those parks you can kind of disappear into and get lost in away from the chaos and everyday randomness of urban life. I've been here for BBQs and other gatherings, but would like to attend a concert here one day. If you just want to escape the big city, this is one of the best places to go.
