I had one of the most negative experiences I've encountered at a medical practice. As someone who…read moreworks in a private counseling and psychiatry office, I am very familiar with standards of patient care--and I can confidently say that the way I was treated here fell far below those standards. I sought care for a hand injury that had been managed conservatively for several weeks under the guidance of providers at my workplace. When my symptoms failed to improve and began worsening, I was advised to seek further evaluation at this facility. Upon arrival, I clearly explained my situation, including the treatments I had already been consistently following (ice, heat, ibuprofen, and a brace for nerve-related pain), as well as my anxiety due to past medical trauma. Unfortunately, the provider largely disregarded this information. I was advised to continue the same course of treatment I had already been following for four weeks, despite my repeated explanation that my condition was worsening. My concerns were not meaningfully addressed, and no alternative plan was discussed until much later. When the nurse brought in a brace, I explained it was the same type I had already been using without relief. The nurse acknowledged this and relayed it to the provider. Only then--after it was clear I was upset--did the provider attempt to revisit my care plan. Additionally, I was deeply uncomfortable with the lack of privacy and professionalism prior to even being seen. I overheard conversations about my case at the nurses' station, just outside my exam room, in a manner that felt dismissive and inappropriate. This contributed to an already distressing experience, especially given that I had communicated my anxiety and past trauma. At no point did I feel genuinely heard or supported until I became visibly upset. Compassion, attentiveness, and respect should not be reactive--they should be the baseline of patient care. As someone who works in healthcare myself, particularly in the mental health field, I find this experience both disappointing and concerning. Patients deserve to be treated with dignity, empathy, and careful attention to their concerns--especially when they are in pain and seeking help.
