You have to go twice for X-ray and cleaning separately if you are a new patience. Poor scheduling system. You are likely to wait for 3-5 months till you get your cleaning after your first visit. The dentist was not as through and caring as other dentists I have seen. He looked at my teeth at a glance for like 1 minute, chatted about his life for the other 2 minutes during the time he saw me (about 3 minutes at maximum), and rushed out of his office to do his other things. I doubt he even looked at my X-ray, even if that happened, it was a brief look. The staff who does the X-ray was nice and caring. The staff answering calls and make schedules was not as professional or caring. They said they'll call you for scheduling, but you'd have to proactively call by yourself otherwise scheduling not happening. This dentistry is very unprofessional and would charge you hidden fees later. Me and my wife went there for a regular dental check up and they sent us a bill later saying that they need to charge extra for the X-ray which is covered with the insurance. And after the check up, they try to scare my wife that she needed a crowing done asap as her tooth decay is really bad. But we were surprised because she is not feeling that much pain in her teeth. We were more suspicious because they try to lure us that it is not covered by the insurance but they would put us on monthly payment plan. They were just trying to rip us off as much as they could from our visit. We turned down their offer and the next day, we went to see another dentist. The dentist made all the check ups and cleaned my wife teeth. And told us that everything is fine for both of us and all the teeth are healthy. Therefore, this Lakeside Dentistry would have costed my wife healthy teeth if we did the crowing and would have burdened us with the bills too. Please avoid at all cost and always double check with another dental clinic if they tell you to do something with your teeth as they are really unprofessional. And I got a bill in December about the X-ray that I did and when I called their office for explanation about each of the items they charged me on my bill, they refused to answer and put me on hold or hang up my calls. They kept telling me to call the insurance company but those charges were done by their clinic and, they have the right to explain to us, the customers, of the charges they make on the bill. I was happy to find them because they areso close to the el. My Dr was Dr. Kochikaran and she was so nice. A couple of times I left voicemails, and they called back about a week later at literally the only time of the week I can't pick up the phone. let me start by saying Dr. Johnson is wonderful. Never in three years of seeing my last dentist did she ever ask if I was ok during a cleaning or filling. Dr. Johnson asked frequently how I was doing and if I needed a break. That's where the good stops. They seem to have a lot of interns or trainees who don't really know what they're doing. I was told my temporary crown would pop off if I flossed, so I didn't. Yet when it came time to remove it, this intern or whatever went in with pliers. I requested she stop and get someone else. Now let's talk about the rest of the staff. Good luck getting them to answer the phone or return a message. I was overcharged by $244 for my crown, and three months later, I'm still trying to get my money back. The office manager or whatever, Ronni, said that my EOB doesn't take into account that my insurance doesn't cover the temporary crown ($65) or something else that she rattled off. I asked her if she filed a claim and she said no, that she just knows they don't cover it. Later I mentioned that the temporary crown should be included in the total price of the crown and she said it was. Really? Contradiction much? I've confirmed with my insurance more than once that I was overcharged, yet they refuse to return my money. Don't go there. read more

After my appt at Lakeside, they mailed me a bill. I returned it with my cc number. They phoned to say they couldn't run my card, so I sent it again. Never heard from them again. Several months later, I received a letter from a collections agency. I called the collections agency and gave them my cc number over the phone. The teeth cleaning itself was mediocre but OK. The atmosphere at the front desk was friendly and well-intentioned but chaotic and, in some essential way, incompetent. They couldn't figure out how to run a credit card, never communicated with me more than one phone call, and then referred me to a collections agency. Thanks a lot, Lakeside. read more

I enjoyed the dentists and think they were professional...however, they have an automated text to remind you for checkups. The text said to call for an appt. I did. 5 times. Never a call back. I finally got lucky and someone answered...however, they told me that I had to get my insurance company to give me a certificate of insurance before I could get an appt. Did I mention I had been a patient here for three years and 7 visits? Nothing had changed about insurance for me. I offered to pay cash in order to set an appt. for a cleaning. Me: Well that is in 28 minutes. That's not very considerate. When can I reschedule? DR: October 14th at 11:00am. Me: Wait, so you are canceling my appointment within 30 minutes of it and now telling me I have to wait a month and a half? DR: Yes, and I would like to have compassion for you, but I know the emergency, so I dont. Me: Wow, ok. OK so I guess I will do the three strikes rule, but this place is literally so bad. This place is absolutely ridiculous. When I first selected it to be my preferred dental service provider (HMO insurance) and tried to make an appointment for teeth cleaning, I was told that the earliest date available was about 3 months from the time when I called. The reason for such a long wait was that it only going to be the case for the first time appointment and scheduling an appointment would not be an issue next time. Well, today I decided that it is time for me to come back for another teeth cleaning. When I called to schedule the appointment for cleaning I was told that the earliest time they would be able to see me was end of January. That is almost 4 months. When I asked the lady why they keep on accepting patients when they cannot provide timely service she replied that it was very busy time of the year and they have 400 new students from Northwestern who signed up earlier this fall. I would probably believe that it is a matter of seasonality except when I tried to schedule an appointment last time it was April. What they really do is take as many patients as they can (it is easy due to proximity of Northwestern Univ and the fact that they are on the list of CIgna dentists) and then make them wait for three to four months to provide the simplest of services. I am already made my agent and insurance provider aware of the issue and will be canceling Lakeside Dentistry as my dental service provider --that place does not deserve my business. I've had a great experience with Dr. Kochikaran (aka Dr. K) and her assistants at Lakeside Dentistry. I came for two visits, the first for cleaning and x-rays (and other stuff you do when you see a dentist for the first time in a while), and the second for replacing some old sealants on two of my molars. For both visits she and her staff were thorough and efficient. I like that she explained what she was doing, warned me if I would have to keep my mouth open for a while, and gave me the option of raising my hand to indicate if I needed a break or was uncomfortable. I'm also a fan of the plastic safety glasses to keep any stuff from getting in my eye. Dr. K seems popular; she's usually booked out 2-3 months in advance, but I think she's worth the wait. One more thing: on the forms you fill out as a first time patient, there's a section in which you describe your feelings towards dental work. While I don't get anxious when I visit the dentist, I thought it was nice that if you were the kind of person who felt stressed about dental visits, there was a place where you could indicate your level of discomfort. read more

Trying to work with this office has been the most frustrating experience I have ever had at a dentist. First, it took about 3 months to get on their roster and get an appointment. After an extremely brief visit and what seemed to be a five minute perfunctory "exam" the dentist recommended I see an endodontist. Which is fine. I found one, finally enrolled with the new dentist and now Lakeside refuses to give me a referral. "Because it can roll back on them" whatever that means! When signing in, I was told that they had no record of my appointment even though I had spoken with the receptionist TWICE in order to schedule an appointment on a day where my dentist was in because my dentist is only in the office two days a week. Why is my dentist only available two days out of the week? Why was I told that I had an appointment if I did not? I've been going to Lakeside for several years and have always been happy with the care I've received. Best thing I can say is that I suddenly had extreme dental pain crop up in the middle of the night and didn't know what to do. I called the office "after hours" number and Dr. Johnson called me back at 4 in the morning, and didn't seem grouchy about it at all. Worst thing is that they usually don't answer their phone and they have to call you back when you need to make an appointment and I'm not always available to answer when they call me back. I seriously wish they could answer their phones. And you have to book your cleaning appointments a few months in advance. Other than that, I'm happy with the care I've received. read more

The office is rude and unhelpful. They are unwilling to book an appointment until they get proof of your insurance on the roster (which can take a couple of months), even though they are booked very far in advance. They won't accept any other proof of coverage, including a fax from your insurance company, so you have to wait ~6 weeks and THEN book an appointment for a few months after that. And they are very rude about it, to the point where I needed to go to the gym to work off my anger after the conversation. You might wonder why this horrible office has so many patients that they are booked months in advance. It's because they accept the crappy $7/month Northwestern dental plan (which has very limited options), and are located right by the campus. Because they are always full and have plenty of patients thanks to NU, they don't care at all about helping you out. They don't care if you have to wait five months to be seen, so they refuse to spend ten seconds reading a fax with proof of your insurance. I've heard great things about Dr. Kochikaran, and nothing but bad things about this office. I was willing to put up with the office because my crappy insurance plan doesn't seem to have better options -- most of the dentists have one star reviews and horror stories on Yelp. But after trying to deal with this office one time, I realized that it's not worth it. I'm going to pay $250 for better insurance just to have a better option than this place. read more

Unfortunately for me, my constant dentist no longer takes my dental insurance so I had to find an in-between for this year until I can switch my benefits to something that he does take. I came here for a quick cleaning and check-up. I was called two hours before my appointment and was asked if I could come in early - I informed them that I was at work and had a meeting which is why the time that I had scheduled was the earliest that I could come in. I was pressured into thinking that I really had to get there earlier to be seen. I ended up rescheduling my meeting so I could show up half an hour to fill out paperwork that took 5 minutes to fill out, wait around for 20 minutes and then, I was seen a mere 5 minutes before my original appt time. The cleaning was okay and overall, a mediocre experience. Not sure if I'll be back anytime soon unless needed. I called this place months ago about setting up an initial exam. I provided all of my insurance info and was told I needed to be on the 'roster' from the insurance company. Fair enough, I called my insurance co and had Lakeside Dental put as my dentist and was told that the roster would be updated the following month. OK, I was not having any pain or problem so I figured I could wait. The next month I called and was told I was not on the roster. Following month, the same. I called the insurance company and they assured me I was on the roster with lakeside and they get a new roster 2 times a month. Next month, called again (on a Monday) and was told that they would return my call on Thursday because that's when they check messages (wt?) Friday afternoon I get a call from the office. Finally!!!! My chance to make an appointment! Woman says, 'no, you are not on the roster' to which I told her that I had been on it for many months. She then asked if it was through the marketplace, which I had already told the first person I spoke to many moons ago. It is from the marketplace and guess what? They DON'T take my insurance. It is so horrible it almost funny. To top it off, the woman said she only knew that because she 'knows a lot about insurances' and 'did a deep dive.' Um...asking a question is not a deep dive. I will be the first to tell you I do not trust dentists. Just like mechanics, I'm always a little skeptical of the work they say you need performed; however, I do not feel the same about Dr. K. She is very knowledgeable, thorough, and, most importantly, trustworthy. She spends adequate time going over all your options, not simply insisting on the most expensive repair, and is even kind enough to work with you on the price/payment options. She even offered to repair my old dentist's botched work at a discounted rate. This is nothing like my old dentist's office which was lined with flat screen TVs, super modern look, and as much free coffee as you can drink. No, the added perk of watching teen mom while you get your teeth cleaned is not there, which is a bit of a shame, but I feel much better going to Dr. K's outdated office space, knowing that my unnecessary dental expenses are not paying for her Lexus. I must add, Dr. K's reception people and dental hygienist aren't always the most pleasant; however, when I go to the dentist, I go for quality dental work, not small talk. I have been exceptionally pleased with all the dental work Dr. K. has performed including a crown I recently had put in. I am only subtracting one star because it is difficult to get an appointment (need to book in advance), but I guess this just means she has no shortage of clients. My old dentist always told me, "Never trust a dentist who drives a Mercedes" while his was always parked in the first spot of the parking lot. Like others on here, I signed up with Lakeside because they're close to where I live. However, their policies are extremely inconvenient and their administrative staff is rude. This rating reflects the staff and policies, not the actual dental work. After enrolling in my plan, I was told to wait until they received proof of my coverage from my insurance company. Two months after enrollment I was still told I couldn't schedule an appointment because I wasn't yet on their registry. I had my insurance fax in proof of coverage but was again told that wasn't sufficient. So I called my insurance, had my primary dentist switched in 2 minutes, and then immediately called that new dentist who was polite and able to schedule me for an appointment for a week later. read more

So not going to lie, this was a judgement about proximity vs. a number of negative online reviews. What I saw was a very busy office with a large library of clientele files and a lot of activity. In my mind, a handful of negative Yelp reviews was far outweighed by a very well-run organization that was friendly and professional from the moment I walked in. The office is 100 yards away so I decided to give them a whirl. After spending my first appointment with my guard up, for everyone else that reads this, whatever happened before, I see none of that now. Randi and Frankie man the front desk and were very welcoming and chatty while I checked in and waited. Randi I and had been actively corresponding over email all week setting up the appointment, clearing the insurance hurdles and getting everything ready for my visit. Basha escorted me back to the examination room, did literally everything she could do to make me comfortable while taking x-rays and was just delightful. Dr. Roffe immediately gave me a solid feeling of confidence during the examination, explained everything to me in detail, offered to confer with my dentist before proceeding and gave me a full description of treatment options. There is still more work to be done on subsequent appointments but I left knowing that every part of the office works in concert and that gives me a great feeling that I am in the right hands. read more

I've been a patient at Lakeside Dentistry for over 5 years, and although I've had decent experiences there with dental cleaning and work, there is a lot left to be desired. First, there is a large amount of turnover in dentists; I have gone through 4 different dentists over my time there. They have all been acceptable and done good work, but I wold really like to be able to establish a relationship with my dentist which is difficult to do with so much turnover. The biggest issue is likely the administrative staff, which seems to make life difficult for patients - particularly with scheduling. It typically takes 3 months of lead time to schedule a routine cleaning/check-up appointment and they are not very cooperative/flexible when trying to schedule. Also, during my time as a patient, I have never received a reminder to schedule my next appointment, inevitably delaying my next check-up. Also, they performed a type of X-Rays not completely covered by my dental insurance without checking/asking first, leaving me to deal with the insurance company afterwards. Do note that the rest of the insurance claims were closed without incident and they handled that portion without any paperwork or hassle. I did have some dental work done there (multiple fillings) at one point and it went well and I have had no recurring issues. I would not recommend them due to the administrative issues and constant turnover of dentists. read more

Can't express enough how happy I am to find a dentist office that has made me feel comfortable and changed my confidence. I was so embarrassed of my smile and always had a fear of the dentist. The front staff extremely friendly, helpful, understanding, and kind. The manager sat with me one on one and explained every detail, procedure, insurance and my out of pocket expenses. It took a month for the work to be completed and it was well worth it! Dr. Johnson's demanor is very warm and thoughtful with options as opposed to none. DO. NOT. COME. HERE. I'm not sure how to be more clear. Not only was the service HORRIBLE (I had to call multiple times to even reach someone, and then she promised to call back. Never did. Also, I saw the front desk worker and an oral hygienist gossiping about other people working in the same office. Loudly. In public. Nodding at me in this conspiratorial way...like, how blatantly unprofessional can you possible be?!), but the work that I received was FAR less than par. Not 24 hours after visiting Lakeside Dentistry, I got a disgusting throat infection. I thought that it was strep, but my doctor determined that it wasn't...she said, "You likely picked it up at the dentist." My tonsils were swollen and covered in pus. Swallowing was so painful. And, because it wasn't strep, I had to wait 14 DAYS for it to heal naturally. 14 DAYS. Thank God I'm young and healthy (before this, I hadn't been sick in 4 years)...I can't imagine having a compromised immune system and picking this up. It was so gross...I've filed with the CDC, so hopefully this will never happen to anyone else. I've NEVER written a negative review on Yelp before. I try to be patient and understanding with businesses, and I realize that health care has a high likelihood of having unhappy customers. But this service's shittiness was unparalleled. Do NOT go here. They told me I had a cavity that would cost $1000 to fill. I went to my hometown dentist for a second opinion, and they said my teeth looked perfect - no cavities, no issues. Lakeside tried to scam me out of $1000, and had I paid them for it, would have destroyed healthy teeth by doing a procedure I didn't need. Dr. Kochikaran was great, but since she left and Dr. Johnson took over, the whole place has turned into a scam. I'll be reporting them to my insurance company. read more

I scheduled an initial appointment for myself at Lakeside Dentistry / Procare Dental Group on Tuesday, March 1. I was informed that the dentist does not do cleanings at first appointments and that I was required to make an appointment at a later date to have my teeth cleaned. I did so...and the first available appointment was more than a month after my exam in May. I show up for the cleaning at 3:30pm on the day in question, only to be informed that it had been rescheduled to 12:30 pm that same day and "Didn't you get our phone message?" I received no notification and had no voicemail or email, my wife also received no notification of the changes. The receptionist told me that she was sorry, but that the earliest date she had available for a cleaning was Friday, July 15. I take the exam date...because I wanted to get my teeth cleaned. I show up at the appointed time on Friday, July 15 to be told, "Oh, we don't have you on the schedule for today. I can get you in on Friday the 19th of August." At this point, I told them never mind. I'll go in for a cleaning with a different dentist in September. This office is exceptionally disorganized and is unable to schedule people in a timely and efficient matter. We are a young couple getting married, and on the first appointment, THEY messed up the appointment schedule, so we changed it to today. I do admit that I was not there, however my fiance is not usually a person to call me crying about things like this. The dentist didn't know who we were at all, what kind of life we live, or what kind of circumstance we are in. However, she kept telling her that we are too young, that she is twice our age, and that she would know better than us, so that we should not get married. For some reason, when choosing a dentist in Chicago, I thought I wanted one in a fancy-shmancy office...pretend I'm in the 'burbs or something. A co-worker recommended Dr Johnson so I made an appt. but had to wait an entire month because they were booked. When I finally went they did some x-rays, and looked around and referred, me to their buddies at Lincoln Park Dental Specialists, which is another entire story. Then I had to wait another month to return at have my teeth cleaned (which was a painful experience - as far as I can tell the dental hygienist was in a hurry to get home Friday afternoon and she was really tearing around in there.) I was sent to Lincoln Park because I had a temporary crown placed on a back tooth in Japan that he wanted them to look at and I broke the root of my front tooth as a child. It all comes down to him trying to convince me to spend $3000+ on each tooth. When I asked Dr Johnson if there was any other option, he just started talking really fast and shooting facts at me. The fact that my pretty good dental insurance wouldn't cover it made more warning bells go off in my head. When I explained to Dr J that I didn't have $3000 he told me, "sometimes we have to spend money on things we don't want to. For example, I need to buy a new cover for my swimming pool. I don't want to, but I have to." He also really tried to pressure me into doing something with my front tooth when the one and only seemingly honest specialist down at Lincoln Park told me I should leave alone. I left to think about it, and when I had to visit the dentist again, I decided to go someplace else. I call Lakeside for my x-rays, but they're rude and tell me it takes at least a month and I have to pay for them. Anyway, I go someplace else and have a great experience besides finding out I have 3 or 4 cavities. The dentist is very concerned that I didn't have these when I was just at the dentist...what will I think of her, she says...I must have changed her diet...was the other dentist very old?, she asks... Eventually, we figure out her assistant used to work for him and she says while she thinks he's a very nice guy, he only has two days in town and needs to make as much money as possible in those two days so doesn't bother with cavities! He only likes to do expensive work. She also says my tooth looks fine and she's fitting a permanent crown for it. I read all the negative reviews before coming to this place but figured "it can't really be that bad." Don't make the same mistake - it IS that bad. It takes MONTHS to get in for a simple cleaning - new patients have to come in for an intro visit before you can even schedule the cleaning because they don't trust that you'll show up. Then you try to schedule and can't reach anyone at the desk for weeks. 90% of the time no one answers the phone. I left a voicemail and never got a callback 3 weeks later. Then when you do get in touch with them they tell you their next appointment isn't for 2 months. After the appointment, you ask to set up your next visit in 6 months and they tell you "no, we can't do that right now, call us in a few months when it gets closer." And of course you try to call and it never gets scheduled. I've now gone through this exact same cycle 3 times in the last two years so definitely not a fluke. this is a busy place. the staff is ok but not all are skilled. a bit pricy (but aren't they all?) even with insurance. by looking at the same x-ray, my previous dentist would like to wait and see for she thinks it could be nothing. but the dentist at Lakeside wanted to treat immediately, which i think is very rush. in fact, twice i was there, i felt being rushed inside the treatment office and being forgotten outside in the waiting room. i don't think it's a good thing. read more
