They charge exorbitant, out-of-network prices and operate with a strict profit-first mentality. Save your money and go elsewhere. I am sharing my experience to warn both returning and prospective patients about the current business practices at Stephens Dentistry. Four years ago, I had a crown placed at this office for almost $2000. Recently, the crown prematurely cracked and failed. When I contacted the office to have it addressed, I was informed that because the practice is under "new ownership," any previous warranty is completely void. They strategically kept the practice's established name, reputation, and all patient records (down to using the same email address!) to maintain business continuity, but legally shielded themselves from any accountability or warranties on previous dental work. Their idea of a "goodwill gesture" was a mere 10% discount on a replacement crown, bringing the cost to over $1,800. This is absolutely exorbitant and roughly twice the price of what other dentists in the Evanston area charge for equivalent or better work. When you pay top dollar for dental work, you expect exceptional quality and accountability for their work, but Stephens Dentistry offers neither. To anticipate the practice's likely response to this review: in addition to bluntly stating they voided all past liabilities due to the ownership change, they will probably also claim they cannot honor the warranty because I haven't been back for regular cleanings at their specific practice over the last four years. I have maintained my dental hygiene, just not with them. Why? Because Stephens Dentistry is out-of-network for basically all insurances and outrageously expensive. The previous management once admitted to me their fees were intentionally set at the 85th percentile of local practices, and it is abundantly clear the new ownership operates with the exact same "cash cow" mindset. In a university town like Evanston, operating with such an unscrupulous, profit-first mentality is deeply disappointing. If you are a long-term patient, be aware that your past warranties mean absolutely nothing to the new owners. If you are a new patient, be prepared for highly inflated pricing. I have decided to take my business elsewhere and strongly advise others to do the same.

My personal experience with this studio is broken down into work I've gotten done on myself and…read morework my kids have gotten done here. All of these experiences were with Dr. Korol. For myself, I refused to go back after being shamed about my dental health after a difficult pregnancy and postpartum experience and was told there was no excuse to let my teeth get that bad so I should just push through and do it anyway. I don't need added judgement when it was hard enough for me to even ask for help. Do better. For my kids, I was told they didn't accept our insurance so we signed both my older kids up for a "membership" plan there. The dental hygienists are always great, Dr. Korol is just rushing through everyone and can be very curt with people to get to the next room. It doesn't feel like she cares at all and that was a huge issue with my oldest daughter who's autistic. We brought her in for a checkup and fluoride treatment/cleaning and the hygienist was so good with her, explaining everything and going slowly so she had time to adjust and accept everything going on and Dr. Korol completely steamrolled all of the progress that was made by the hygienist. She kept talking over myself and my partner as we tried to get her to slow down as we could see a small meltdown brewing. She kept telling her "let me just do this, no it's fine just a little longer, don't move" and just generally ignoring her and her vocalizing she needed a break or a minute to breathe and instead told us "I have kids so I know how this can be." Great, do you have kids on the spectrum? Because I highly doubt it based on our experience. My daughter has been working so hard with her counselors on being vocal about her discomfort and working through it with breaks and just like that she felt completely out of control of a situation because it was inconvenient for Dr Korol to spend more than 15 minutes on her. At this point just let the hygienist finish the work because that was the only redeeming part of the appointment. I ended up calling to voice our frustrations and concerns with the office and was told that we could see the other dentist who was better equipped for children and that they completely understood the situation but ultimately we decided it's still her practice and money that goes to her so we decided to take our whole family's business elsewhere. My partner, two daughters and myself will no longer be going to this dental studio due to our experiences. Please use this as a learning experience moving forward and do better.

My previous dentist retired in November so I called and Artful Smiles did a wonderful job of accommodating me. However, they insisted on taking an X-ray even though I strongly asked them not to as I am schedule to go through radiation for cancer soon and it was utterly unnecessary for them to cement the small piece back (I've had my veneers chip off 10 times since I got them in 1998). But I let them x-ray me even though it was stupid. Then I got the bill. $902. Even with insurance, I am out of pocket over $500 to cement a tiny piece of veneer back. I looked back at my previous dentist where he did the same work on a much larger piece of veneer: $250 before my insurance so I was out of pocket around $150. Before my chemo started my oncologist let me know not to get my teeth cleaned. I hadn't received the above bill so I called them and scheduled a cleaning 2 days before chemo was to begin. I go the appointment and they told me that they had to do a full x-ray panel to clean my teeth. I told them, again, why I don't want x-rays (radiation) and that it is unnecessary for prophylaxis. They wouldn't clean my teeth without so I walked out. They are professional but outrageously overpriced and require you pay for things like x-rays that are utterly unnecessary.

Here's my story: a year or so ago they told me they would charge me $2,200 for a crown. That seemed really high, so I talked to my insurance and they said, no, our negotiated price is $1,250, maximum, and they are obligated by contract to charge no more, no matter what portion is paid by insurance, what portion paid by me. I called back pointed that out, but got lots of pushback. Took several phone calls to get them to back off and charge me the contractual amount. Now today have the same deal going on again, with a much higher charge than negotiated - and again, when we got the insurance company on the phone, they agreed to back off - but they didn't stop for the excess. I should explain that, in past years, when our dentist worked for different practices, they would give us a high list price for a crown, implant or whatever, but then discount it way back when we said we didn't have dental insurance. But these guys, no. It's high and stays high, so we figured out we had to have insurance. And it's not just the crown - office visits, cleanings, everything over the last few years cost almost double we had paid before our dentist switched to this practice, and almost double what it costs now that we have dental insurance. And they won't respect the negotiated price for the bigger items. I love my dentist, but it's not worth dealing with the management. We're done.

Then the hygienist kept insisting I was there for a cleaning. But I was only interested in a consultation. We agreed on a treatment plan and I paid them 1345.00. To cover the first visit 345$ and 1000$ towards my next visit. Second visit was to see an oral surgeon, have 3 teeth removed and to start a deep cleaning. Before this visit I was supposed to take antibiotics and pain killers. I went to my pharmacy to pick the medicine up, and it had been sent to a Walgreens, miles from my house, instead of my usual Isco pharmacy that I'd told them to send the prescription. At this appointment I was charged 6605$. The appointment was for 9:30, an hour later the surgeon shows up, not even knowing I was on his calendar for the day, then refused to perform the surgery. "My partner missed a day of work to accompany me" They started a partial deep cleaning and I was told the visit would be comped, due to lack of professionalism. After this visit I called to find out the balance of my account. I have insurance paying a portion and I am responsible for the rest. The BOOK KEEPER, is never available, and no one in the office can explain what I have paid for and what I still owe. So I was told by DR Ami that I would be refunded 100% since I'd already over paid by thousands for the work I'd had done Third appointment was to continue the deep cleaning. Once again I tried to get some knowledge of my bill and what I had paid for. Again, the book keeper was unavailable. I never made an appointment to finish the deep cleaning, they still owe me $456.00 and refuse to communicate with me any longer. So in short. If you want to pay thousands of dollars for unprofessional service, and billing with no explanation this is your dentist.
