As a fisherman let me say this first, they call it fishing for a reason. If you always caught fish,…read morethey would call it catching. I have fished with some of the best fisherman in the world and they don't even catch em all the time. That being said, being a charter boat captain is not only about taking your clients fishing, there is a certain experience or service that people expect when they book a trip. Our trip with Captain Paul certainly met and exceeded my expectations. I had booked an appointment for my 11 year old nephew and I. My nephew really enjoys fishing and I thought this would be a fun experience. I have previously been on a few charters including one not so great trip that my brother likes to keep reminding me about. For the record I got seasick, it wasn't pretty. Anyhow we arrived at our scheduled time and were greeted by the captains of one of their boats. We were directed to Captain Paul's boat who was getting ready for our trip. It was an absolutely beautiful day. As we headed out it wasn't long before we started to set up our lines. I say we because Captain Paul had my nephew help him which was fun for him. We booked a half day drip with is about a 6 hour day. While the first few hours went by quickly with our conversations with Captain Paul, we didn't have any bites. We tried some different depths and different lures. It wasn't until we "fooled" the fish into thinking that we were not ready that the first trout hit a line. I woke up my nephew from his slumber and he reeled in his first trout. It wasn't too long after that we had another bite but lost that one. Before the end of the day we hooked into another trout that my nephew landed. We had fun on our ride back in and were pretty pleased with a couple of nice sized trout. Captain Paul cleaned our fish for us and as a nice bonus gave my nephew a t-shirt. As we drove home we had fun with movie lines from one of our favorite movies. "What's for dinner? Trout. What's fun lunch? Trout. What's for breakfast? Trout!" For those unsure of the movie, that would be the original Parent Trap. Great movie, better time with Captain Paul and Optimum Charters. Initially I thought this might be a one time experience for my nephew however we had so much fun I'm considering making this an annual trip!

There isn't a lot of shade, but you can sit by the lake at a bench in the shade. And then, there is the elephant in the room, who puts trail cams up on all their trails? This place must be high crime that they need so many. If you need somewhere to stay in a pinch like we did, and you have an RV with a shower, this is a decent place to stay. The lakes and rivers are just beautiful. We saw so many loons, bald Eagles, and other small wildlife (chipmunks...lots of chipmunks...). Campsites are quite nice with fire rings, grates and flat tent areas. There are also "government boxes" into the woods behind each campsite which eliminate the task of digging holes when nature calls. Portages are evil...my advice is to keep gear as light as possible...think backpacking...not car camping... Be ready for rain; this is the north woods of the Midwest after all! Here at Agate Bay, you can pause to appreciate the setting viewing onto the endless waters of Lake Superior. The big highlight is walking on a cement pathway that extends out to a remote lighthouse observation point. This pedestrian strip only takes 10 minutes to walk, but it affords you a picturesque overlook into the wide-open appearance of Lake Superior. You can breathe in the fresh air while making the stroll over to the lighthouse and ultimately, coming to Agate Bay allows for a casual rest from driving, if you're not in any hurry. While visiting back in early June, there were a couple of cars parked in the lot and just a few tourists checking out this cool little beachfront. Generally, it was quiet and not nearly as congested as I had anticipated it to be for peak summer visitations. The historic lighthouse at the end of the beach pier is a rewarding opportunity for a picture with Lake Superior in the background. Lol, it made me ponder...how many of the 5 Great Lakes had I been to??? But overall, it's a pleasant moment outside. And definitely, making the journey on North Shore Scenic Drive is the epitome of enjoying nature, with loads of beautiful state parks and gushing waterfalls. Lastly, located just before the walking pier, they have a few picnic tables set up which is a nice chance to enjoy lunch with a view. From here at Agate Bay, I'd suggest grabbing dessert 3 miles away at Betty's Pies before spending time at fantastic MUST DO - Gooseberry Falls State Park.

This summer when I took my friend on a date to go see Hippo Campus and Polica, it was enjoyable as well. This time it began in the day and went into the the late night.
