Stunning overlook - even when the weather's rainy and cloudy! We went in the late fall and even…read morethe drive along Lenox Road to the overlook was gorgeous and lovely. An added benefit is that the place is a trailhead to the Charcoal Trail (so named as there used to be charcoal pits here) which is a moderate/hard loop trail which culminates in another set of vista points looking both in the same direction as the Olivia Overlook as well as the opposite direction. It's a quicker route to the vista points if you take the right-hand side of the loop but either way, you'll: 1) be in for an uphill slog; 2) have a great sense of accomplishment making the vista point; 3) will see some beautiful ravines, slopes, brooks, boulders, and trees. Although the well-marked Charcoal Trail loop is only about 1.6 miles long, it takes longer than you think due to the uphill sections. Take water - and a hiking stick will help too.

On the other side of the road is a forest with a network of forest trail walks. The trail is mostly flat and made of crushed stone. We parked by the main entrance at the beach and headed north on the well marked Main Trail before we peeled off to the right to walk the Loop Trail which eventually rejoined the Main Trail and took us back to our car. It was peaceful and tranquil today as the only other soul we saw was a young lady jogging along to her music. It was gorgeous out there- the trees were bare of leaves in preparation of the inevitable harsh winter and we agreed it was one of the better hikes we'd had in a while. One cool thing we saw on the Loop Trail was a humongous boulder off on the side of the trail. It appears on the trail map as (you guessed it) "Boulder".

You will not be able to find it unless you get a local as the tour guide. The best way to go down to diesel lake, is to go down to the lake streets all the way to the end of the lake street. Then turn right go into the fourth Street. In the corner of Lake Street and fourth Street you will see the entrance of the lake. It's a good trail to just walk around the lake or do some jogging in the morning if you are in the neighborhood.

Suggest loading GPS or navigation app before losing signal in the mountains. Of note, and quite a surprise after a score of years closed, the bridge on Umpachene Falls Road has been rebuilt and is open. Yesterday, the falls were rushing abs bracingly cold! While I didn't fully submerge or hide behind the water curtain, I sat in the flow and was transfixed and refreshed for an hour. Remains a Berkshire treasure!

I came here for kayaking. This beautiful, scenic lake is clean, and circling the lake is an enjoyable 9-mile paddle. From the water, you can take in the scenic hills that surround the lake, or view some of the waterfront gorgeous homes. This state park is well worth checking out.

There's a small island with a old fireplace & chimney; no camping or fires are allowed. However, it's a nice spot to stop, go for a shallow swim, and a have a snack just take your trash with you. The CT DEEP maintains the boat ramp and motors are restricted on the lake to 8 HP. A welcome rule to Green Powered Craft. Springtime the lake is stocked, but please catch and release for other enthusiasts to enjoy. The gravel parking area is across the quiet road. Pot-O-Potty's are available is the parking area - should have a need. The Lake is lined with cottages, a couple of Town beaches, a private Lake club, two scout camps. So there's plenty to see along your loop.

I've paddle Big Pond in the past and thought this central Mass lake, just North of Otis Reservoir, deserves to be shared with other Active Life Water Yelpers. Then public launch is small and at first glance you think, "Where's the Lake?" Located in a quiet end of a naturally scenic waterway leading from the lake to its overflow point. Frankly, this is my favorite portion of the Yak adventure. The bog stream is about a half mile from the lake; deep enough for motorized craft to enter the lake (my less favorite component). The stream is lined with Lilly Pads and Aquatic Grasses with a wooded shore. Home to fish, turtle, bugs zipping along the surfaces, and beaver along with the occasional Heron waiting for a delicacy. Very peaceful. Then the waterway opens up to the wide lake. Cottages of all ages and upkeep, and not overly crowded on this day. The lake has a heavier iron content and is a bit murky, just the same, very pleasant to swim and enjoy water craft. Yes, powerboats do zip to and fro, however, they tend to be courteous in passing at a safe distance. In the center of the lake an island large enough to host roughly 15 to 25 quaint cottages who have figured out how to transport humans and their contents from the shore. Potable water and sewage disposal baffles this curious Tom Sawyer. Just the same, it's worth a spin around or paddle around, just beware or other shallow glacial rubble poking out above or just below the surface.
