A Perfect Family Fishing Day - Fish to Table…read more We had researched a few fishing guides ahead of time. Our kids had gone fishing with me a few times this year, but we had nothing to show for it. We thought we would try again with the help of Christopher. The entire experience exceeded our expectations. We had booked an afternoon slot, we just had to pay a deposit with Venmo. Christopher took care of all the details - boat, rods, tackle, bait - everything. We just had to show up. We showed up a little early for our 1:30 slot, and Christopher had already cleaned and prepped the boat, so we started a few minutes early. The whole day at Lake Anna one kid or the other was hooking a fish every 10-15 minutes. We lost about 20-30% of the strikes, so my kids caught 20 bass with only about over 3 hours of line-in-water. This time of year, Christopher did not need to use the sonar, he just knew where we should cast. He took the time to teach the us how to cast and the types of structures we should look for underwater. He also taught us how to skip the bait! I had never seen anything like it. He taught us how to feel for the fish, time the setpoint and finally how to effectively set the hook. Christopher threw in a little fish history and some fish psychology while scuttling between hot spots. We headed back about 5:00 with our keepers. He took a few photos for us and we headed home. We got home with our catch and taught the kids how to gut and clean their catch. We cooked our fish by simply wrapping them in foil with butter, salt and garlic. The kids loved eating their own catch. Perfect and memorable trip for the family. Truly outstanding. Five stars!

It's not very large and definitely not your typical park i.e. with tons of seating and a children's play area. This is more of a fishing off the dock and hopping into a boat park. As you enter the you'll notice benches w/ seats - this is such a great area for catching up on your novel. This area will shade you from the scorching sun rays. I enjoyed reading a book and meeting locals. Most people came to fish, run, and for the scenic walk. The benches on the dock/walkway are metal so if you're planning to sit and hang bring something to lay over the metal before you sit - it may burn your bum!

I love that the whole park is sprawled over a marshy creek and there a boardwalk meandering through it. And guess what?? The boardwalk has been extended all the way to the next neighborhood. Now there are two entrances winding around this rustic, reedy park. It's a bird watchers delight... not to mention some other little critters. Today I came on a crisp, cold day to get some fresh air, exercise and then settle on a bench and read, while soaking in nature and and reflect on the constraspects of the current pandemic. Perfect place to gain positive perspective! My favorite park!

The staff are working tirelessly throughout the day making sure everyone is safe and the ground kept clean. My only downside was the website is not user friendly at all! They could definitely use and upgrade. Otherwise highly recommend if you're looking for a weekend getaway in a cabin or campground.

This review is specifically about the Lake Anna State Park, not about the lake itself…read more We are regulars at this park, but were disappointed with our visit today. It's still the same beautiful park, with nice hiking trails, a public beach ($), fishing, picnic tables, etc. However, today's visit was FAR short of being a relaxing day in nature. We arrived by boat around 9:15 am on a Saturday morning. *There is a lot of ongoing vegetation restoration so many areas near the water that previously had been available for park goers are currently blocked off. *Even by 9:15 am, all of the picnic tables were taken by what appeared to be large groups. Some of those groups were BLARING music -- that we could still hear from the lakeside hiking trails. The swimming area was also PACKED with people. *Also, while the park is usually kept very clean, there were areas where some trash had accumulated. (For instance, there were 3 extra large, empty plastic bottles in the covered structure by the pond near the boat docks). *Finally, there were many (20?) park goers using the area near the boat docks for non-boating activities, making it potentially dangerous as boats and jet skis were coming in and out. There were people swimming in this area, while at the same time some Jet Skiers were teaching beginners how to ride. There was also a man teaching his two toddlers how to fish while sitting on the edge of the docks. Another group was sitting on the edge throwing sticks to their dog that was in the water. We will, of course, return to this state park, but will more likely visit on a weekday.

I came with very low expectations due to very low price for the night. (We came during off season - freezing winter weekend.) and they gave us a refurbished room. Big deck overlooking the lake. Cathedral ceiling on the 2nd floor. It is very cold. The room heater took several hours to warm the room. My husband thinks if we had set it about 5 degrees warmer than we really wanted, it might have warmed up more quickly. I tried to change channels on the TV and we didn't have the correct remote, so the TV channel got stuck on trying to have us choose the proper language. The guy who was on duty (at the bait / fishing place - where we checked in), came in, tried it out, couldn't get it to work, then went to another room and got us one of the older TVs. (Which was a big TV also, but not a widescreen new one.) That TV worked fine; but then we couldn't use the remote to turn it on & off. (gasp!) (First World problems.) He was a nice guy and was very helpful. The way the building is oriented, you can't see East or West directly for seeing sunrise and sunset. (Darnit!) It was so cold, I didn't want to go outside to take pix over the lake to get the sunrise & sunset pix I really wanted over the lake. Still, I got good pix of different skies over the lake. Even got some seagulls flying overhead! That was pretty cool in freezing February!

The morning we got there was cold rainy but we were dressed for the weather no big deal So we make our way down to this boat with our captain. I take a look at the pontoon we are getting on and I'm telling my husband it's too small 6 people in our group and then you have a Captain and his mate so 8 people on a 21 ft pontoon. But we are here so we are going to make the best of it right we was all excited. Some of the people in our group have never fished before. So instead of the Captain explaining himself what is happening he proceeds to take off flying down the river and then gets to a spot and starts putting poles in the water so fish start biting right away! And right away he starts screaming at people get up grab a pole you guys wanna fish right. So I did I was the first to jump up and grab poles meanwhile you could hardly walk around I think we had 9-10 poles in the water and he had about 12 or so sitting in on the side of the boat also so literally no room it was a hazard the captain was very rude and would constantly make several rude jokes about people from WV. The mate or the helper I'm not sure of the correct title he's uses his name was Mark and he was great with us all. He helped get fish off our lines and rebait any questions he was so helpful. Jim was our captain. And we will never book another fishing trip with him! We was truly disappointed in what was suppose to be a really fun trip. We did manage to catch a lot of fish to being home. I hope on our next adventure there is a positive one. . The good part we caught alot of fish and Mark was an amazing guy who helped us all. They also have a nice little store at the Marina that has clothes and snacks and prices aren't too bad. The guy in there was very nice also. We bought some rain gear. So we will most definitely visit again but will not recommend going with Jim.
