I live close by in the SG Valley. I used to be a frequent regular customer. However with a change in ownership 2-3 years ago the new owner/manager I find unfriendly and sometimes hostile. Lagunitas General Store is one of several places you'll see as you make your way from the town of Fairfax out to the coast. It's got the West Marin vibe and serves a clear need in the community for a store where one can pick up what's necessary without going over White's Hill to bigger stores. I'm just a passer-by though, and when I did recently I noticed a Taco Tuesday special ($12 for 3 street tacos) that got me inside. There, between two of us, we sampled all 3 versions (beef, pork, and chicken) and between us we couldn't agree on which was best. What we did agree on? All were fine but none were so good that we'd be planning a return visit. What might get me back is knowing that they serve Straus soft serve (in which I indulged). On this visit they had only vanilla. An asset to the community, no doubt, but - taco curiosity satisfied - any future visits for this non-local will likely be fully focused on the soft-serve. read more

Our local, Lagunitas General Store, has blossomed into a warm, well managed, place to meet friends and to enjoy great ribs, smash burgers, chicken, salads and fresh baked goods. and well -stocked with good wines, beers, juices and any needed necessaries. The staff is amazing, friendly and inviting. Now they have beers on tap to go with the ongoing grill of sumptuous ribs and chicken. Lagunitas Grocery Store is the perfect pit stop for a nature filled day or weekend. They have a variety of grocery items: a selection of wine, fire wood, snacks, toiletries, and quintessential camping items like marshmallows, campfire popcorn, and instant rice. We had everything we needed for our weekend getaway at Samuel Taylor, and really only made a stop here for what they're known for: their deli, sandwiches, and friendly staff. I got the Rueben sans rye, replaced with Dutch crunch. It was absolute perfection. The pastrami was seasoned beautifully and wasn't dry or tough. They were cut into thin slices which made getting the perfect bite that much easier. My husband got the bbq sandwich and added onions and jalapeños. You get the smokiness of the meat and bbq sauce, and the tang from the pickled jalapeños. Grab yourself a bag of chips and a drink from the fridge to pair with your sandwich. Eat it inside and enjoy the tunes, or outside and enjoy the crisp, fresh air. Tip: This is the closest grocery store to Samuel Taylor park which is about a 10-15 minute drive. On your way to the redwoods or Point Reyes Station watch for this building with the ivy covered Ghost sign and pull into the parking lot. Get out of you car and go into the cafe/ grocery store and feel yourself transported into the 1960's. Feel your shoulders drop and maybe even notice that you are smiling. First of all, when we walked up I saw a bottle of root beer sitting on someone's table. The die was cast! We came for burgers and were delighted to see they make smashburgers...& we were NOT disappointed! The owner told us they'd be great, & he was right. Messy deliciousness! Crispy edges. We are immensely excited about this place! I grew up in the valley and this is the place we've always needed. The food is fantastic! I love the breakfast sandwich. The fries are excellent. My husband, who has very high standards for burgers, really liked his burger. The strauss soft serve ice cream is delish! We went back for ice cream cones three days in a row! I've been stopping by this place for many many years as going to the coast is one of my favorite escapes. The Sir Francis Drake Boulevard is one of the most efficient thoroughfares from U.S. 101 so this is a much traveled route for me. I've always like this place, but on this one stop, I happen to have a chat with one of the co-owners, Loring, who says they bought the place about three years ago. I knew there was something different. It just felt like it. While I always enjoyed the food in the past, Loring and Jules, the other co-owner, have raised the bar. It's not always the case when establishments change hands. When something you enjoyed just got better? What a lovely surprise. The food is good and they serve good stuff. I'll just call it "country chic" for the lack of a better personal term. Lagunitas Grocery just a bit east of Samuel P. Taylor State Park, midway from 101 to Point Reyes National Seashore and a whole lot of other destinations. So if you're motoring on through, give these guys a chance to prove their mettle to you. Ordered a tuna melt on sliced sourdough and it came on a giant bready roll with a tiny amount of tuna. Ordered a veggie bagel and there was only avocado and cucumber. The bagel was terrible. I come from New York, so my expectations are high. Note to the owners--if you truly want to succeed here, take a play from the IP Market playbook in Inverness. Study their brands, their layout, and most importantly their QUALITY! Don't cut corners buying shitty food. Get the best bougey organic stuff you can find, charge a little more and you will succeed. I really like the vibe of this place, it feels very hippy/old time country store. It's more geared for campers at Samuel P Taylor park stocking up on items or cyclists passing on through. I thought it had a pretty big wine selection for a small store. I usually stop by to get a deli sandwich and milkshake any time I'm driving through on my way to West Marin. It's a cute convenient grocery store for the neighborhood. My friend and I came early to go to a Tea Museum and needed to kill sometime. The drawn art is very appealing and definitely eye catching. Outside seating is minimal. Inside is very tiny. The prices on regular store grocery items are a tad high but thats because it's convenient than driving away from the neighborhood to go to a corporate grocery store. What is really appealing is the menu items and deli case. There are a variety of items that they make that are appealing. The breakfast and lunch items were VERY tempting, BUT I just needed something quick to bite to tide me over until the tea museum. So I got one deviled egg and one round fudge to split with my friend. I believe the man there was the owner? He was very friendly and vibrant. There was one other employee at the register, so it was kind of slow between the two to get checked out or even pay for my items. They were both extremely friendly though. Did I mention this was a Poke Stop? The fudge was THICK and hefty. The deviled egg could have had a bit more flavor, maybe tad more cayenne. Both were delicious regardless and definitely tide me over until the museum opened. Definitely a nice place to go to after a long hike or stroll in the county. We came from Kent lake after fourish mile around the lake. Got their burger medium rare, it's rare for a place to do that. Friend got their chicken burger, definitely not going to find this quality within a few miles. This place needs to be tapped into! They don't really have seating besides the stone circular bunch up behind the building, we managed to get it. Love this place. Always pop in for supplies on my way elsewhere on the corridor. Today I purchased a sandwich. Three people made it. All without gloves. The gentleman who started it pulled away to ring folks up at the register. The remaining lady was working on a BLT. She pulled out raw bacon to cook in the microwave and began making my veggie sandwich without washing her hands after handling the bacon. I am a vegetarian. This is also a cross contamination issue. So glad they purchased this deli and turned it around into a community meeting type of place, where we can meet, by our daily meals and just see people we really enjoy. This is such a lovely deli! The people are so nice. They have really stepped up their game with their burritos. I ordered the super steak burrito, and it is the largest burrito I've ever seen. the ingredients are truly delicious, the pieces of steak are perfectly prepared, and the additional beans, rice, guac just all combine so perfectly! Also, they make a killer Reuben sandwich! You can hardly get your mouth around it - and I've got a big mouth. There's a nice assortment of cold deli foods to take home. Very tasty looking. For two girls who were fairly hungry after forest bathing in Samuel P. Taylor State Park, this place was EXACTLY what we needed! Tons of fresh deli offerings -- sandwiches, potato salads, fruit salads, etc. There were also cold beverages to pick from, numerous brands of potato chips, wines, and general groceries. Also, plenty of indoor seating, with tables, as well as some outdoor seating. Parking is ample and they accept credits cards as well as cash, of course!
