Located in a more upscale hotel so I was not prepared but good thing my top could pass. I went in through the back door and they were very busy that evening so I stood there for 5 minutes before anyone decided to even notice I was there even though a couple of the workers walked past me and didn't acknowledge me. I had previously made a reservation for 5 and didn't forgot my train back to London was for 6:20 so I asked them to push a rush on the food. I got the gentleman's tea which is a different take on afternoon tea with more savory food than sweets. Here's my thoughts on the food: Earl Grey Tea: deliciously delightful until it sits too long in the water so I recommend you taking the tea leaves out after 5-10 min Rated from my favorite to least for the savory items: Mini Welsh lamb burger: Cucumber yogurt is great with lamb, and lamb wasn't too gamey and perfectly seasoned Scotch egg: cooked perfectly where the yolk was still runny and wasn't too salty which is great Smoked salmon: it was ok Slow cooked bbq pulled pork ciabatta: I liked the crispy ciabatta but there was too much bbq sauce drowning the pork Roasted sirloin of Welsh beef: since I was the last seating of the gentleman's tea, it felt like they cooked it and left it out under a lamp for a long time. It was hard and chewy. Miniature prawn cocktail: prawns felt like the above, cooked and sat there for a while. The prawns were very hard to chew so over cooked and very heavily sauced. Sweets were pretty good considering they weren't too sweet which is just how I like it! It was a very busy night so I appreciate that the workers were pretty quick with my food even though I didn't get to order my tea until the food was delivered. We had a very nice dinner here. The atmosphere was quiet and the service was professional. I started with the crab and prawn fish cakes which were accompanied by Coronation smoked mackerel mayonnaise. Very tasty and three fish cakes fairly large fish cakes could easily be shared. Laguna Kitchen & Bar is one of those rare hotel restaurants where both guests and locals come to dine and celebrate. I've been here quite a few times, and the food and service has been consistently excellent. I've sampled their Sunday lunch over a romantic liaison, as well as celebrated a good friend's birthday here - the surroundings suited both. With low lighting and dark wood furnishings, Laguna somehow manages to pull off a bustling New York restaurant vibe that's both welcoming and elegant. The best part is, once you've finished your meal, you only need to walk about 10 feet to enter one of the best bars in the city. It's a win-win situation! If you're not partial to the revelry, the floor-to-ceiling wine wall sufficiently separates the bar from the dining area. Although reviews are all good, it was still a really positive surprise. A restaurant in a hotel and on a Sunday evening is normally a recipe for disappointment. Not the case with Laguna. Truly professional and friendly service from the moment we arrived to when we left. The menu was just the right length and something for all of us. Attention to detail continued into the food itself with excellent bread and olive oil where so many restaurants skimp on the quality. Generous portions in starters, mains and vegetables - all perfectly cooked and flavoursome. And excellent value for money. All staff smartly dressed and attentive and we were impressed that tidying and cleaning was a continuous process, no standing around here! Very pleased - we'll be back. read more

Went to this restaurant on a recommendation and wasnt disappointed. I'm not normally a fan of hotel restaurants, but this is the exception that proves the rule. The bar was lively and full of parties of people enjoying cardiff nights out. We went straight to the dinning room, that was quieter but still felt lively. For starters I had a wonderfully fresh buffalo mozzarella and tomato salad and my companion had the prawns, which he really enjoyed. For mains I had the veggie gallette, with the pastry being light and crispy and the veggies just perfectly cooked. My companion had the salmon which he said was cooked to perfection. Part of the Park Plaza Hotel, this bar and kitchen is clearly going to be Swish with a capital S. You can enter through the hotel or from Greyfriars Road itself (all the doors are about 9ft tall) My first impressions were that it was a little cold looking - very minimalist in design. However I loved the huge black and white photos they had blown up and framed leaning against the walls. Decor is really kept simple with lights hanging over each table (mostly booths along one side with leather benches with high back rests) and dark tiled floors. I went in for a work lunch and was impressed with the speed of the service - although we had three different waiters/waitresses they seemed to have continuity of service. Food arrived really promptly and was great - we had the croque madame, a really meaty homemade burger, poached egg on toast and some sweet potato wedges with a thai-style dip. Presentation is what you would expect for a high end hotel bar - smart, simple and stylish. Prices are not as expensive as I thought they were going to be - 3 lunches, a side dish and 4 soft drinks came to £32. However, we did go for the more snacky food as opposed to full salads or lunch plates which ranged from £4 to £10. I was a little embarrased when I went to the bathroom though - it's so dark I actually went into the men's first! However, when I finally made it to the ladies it was clean, sleek and very, very hi-tech. This restaurant is tastefully decorated and has a good atmosphere. Not too stuffy like a lot of hotel restaurants and it serves genuinely good food. We had a delicious tuna steak and rib eye steak. It was all well presented and tasted great. read more

Laguna Bar & Kitchen, part of the Park Plaza Hotel, has always been my "time to impress" date restaurant, and going there this past Monday for dinner only reconfirmed this impression. The moment you walk into the bar area and see the sleek, minimalist design with large black and white photos, you get the impression of a chic, big city restaurant with lines out the door for a table. The bar is well furnished and well stocked with many fantastic cocktails and wines, as well as its own menu for quick & cheap eating over a drink. There's also a beautifully decorated outside seating area overlooking the river running alongside the restaurant which is a great place to enjoy your meal on one of Wales' rare sunny days. The restaurant itself is a high ceilinged dining room with plenty of tables and a literal wall full of wines. Along with a lovely glass of red, I ordered the Lemon Roasted Jerusalem Artichoke Salad to start, followed by the Madgetts Farm honey roast duck breast. The artichoke salad was tasty, though the jerusalem artichoke was a bit sparse when compared with the other vegetables, but the mussels were both plentiful and well received. The duck was served with potato dauphinoise, blood orange braised endives, and cherry jus, and I can confidently say it was some of the best duck I've ever had! The meat was moist and flavorful and perfectly complimented by the sweet and tart jus, the dauphinoise creamy while still maintaining some crisp on the potatoes, and the endive mouth watering and delicately flavored. From the attentive staff to the delicious seasonal dishes that never leave you disappointed, Laguna Bar & Kitchen is a great place for date nights, special occasions, or even just a quiet drink and snack on your own. Quite the revelation. The Park Plaza restaurant / bar is quiet and stylish, offers great food & drink and has a lovely outside terrace running the length of the restaurant with umbrellas and benches. A little stream runs next to the terrace and you're surrounded by trees and hidden away from the city. Be warned though: expect lots and lots of greenfly in the late summer! Had lunch with a friend one Wednesday afternoon (had the day off - such a treat to go for a boozy lunch in the middle of the day!). They offer two courses for around £12. Lots and lots of drinks bring the bill to around £60 for two people. It's a very sophisticated hidey hole tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The food I had was wonderful: Caprese to start followed by a beautiful salmon steak with chorizo and squid in a rich tomato sauce with fresh new potatoes. Mmmmmmmmm. One time I came on a Sunday afternoon and had Monkfish and black pudding kebab and I was dreaming about it for days afterwards, it was that good. Don't be put off by how posh it all seems.
