For almost 10 years I've wanted to stay at Chateau Impney…read more And just before the end of 2017 I got my first chance. And about two weeks ago, I found myself there again for a second impromptu stay. Our first stay was out of necessity, as we thought we had a bed somewhere else for the night. Now we could have stayed at another place, on a blow up bed. But we decided to treat ourselves to The Chateau instead - no brainer. It had been snowing that day in late December, so as we arrived just before dusk, there was a light layer of snow on the grounds. It was perfect. The room we got (603 I think) on this first occasion was at the front of the building. It wasn't a terribly big room. But it was extremely comfortable and the bathroom, with shower only, was spotless. The bed was excellent also. That evening we ate at the bar and I had what has become the best egg sandwich I've ever had. Our second visit was after three days of canoeing and camping on the River Wye. Again a last minute decision, we both had the same idea when it transpired no one else in our group wanted to camp for a fourth night. Chateau Impney. And this second visit was amazing. The room we got (609) was fabulous. It was more spacious, both the bedroom and bathroom. The bathroom had a shower AND A SEPARATE BATH! Luxury indeed. We made the most of both. And as for the bed, it was just as comfortable as before. But after our river adventure it was even more amazing. Best nights sleep in a long time. We had dinner in the restaurant on this occasion, which was fine. I had a very nice mozzarella and parma ham starter. And a good risotto for the main. After this we were both in a food coma, so retired to bed. I almost forgot, the breakfast here was really good on both occasions. A really good full english and the usual continental stuff on offer. We are definitely going to be back.

The front desk had made a reservation for us when we checked in. However, the restaurant didn't get it, so that started things off wrong. They didn't want to seat us for over an hour, and we told them we were very tired from sightseeing all day and didn't want to wait until 8pm to eat dinner. There were only about 5 tables full besides ours. So they sat us and then promptly ignored us for the rest of the evening. We had to go to the bar to get our own drinks. A person from the kitchen brought our food out and no one ever came back to our table. The 3 waitresses were so rude and kept giving us the evil eye the entire time we ate. I have never in my life been treated so badly by wait staff at a restaurant. I can't believe that servers and wait staff are allowed to treat guests so rudely. We drove hours out of our way to stay here on the recommendation from a friend who said it was wonderful. We will not be recommending this place to anyone, nor will we ever return.

Upon entrance, you'll see the most impressive thing about the building - which is the main foyer. It's a good space, and has a Costa Coffee at the back. The reception staff were courteous and helpful when I realised I didn't have my HHonours number (I gave it over at check out, which was fine). The room itself was big, although on the first floor without a lift. Not a problem with my little wheely bag but I could imagine a problem with a family with larger bags - but reception did offer to order a porter to help. Regarding the room - a little kooky in the layout with regards to the bathroom. So behind the bathroom door itself, you have the toilet and the bathtub - because the sink is in a little alcove before the door in a carpeted area opposite the wardrobe in the room itself. As a solo traveller, it was no problem - but if someone was travelling in a group and needed to use the bathroom during the night... well the alcove is on the same lighting network as the behind the door-bathroom. So you'd illuminate the rest of the room going for a quick break at 3am. Not a great idea. Breakfast was having an off day on my first day, as it was much better on the second day. I suspect it was because I went late on day one whereas on the second dayI was there before 8am and everything looked more appetising. So if I'm ever in the area again, then I'd go back. The hotel made me utterly comfortable.

Travelodge Hotel - Droitwich - Quite pleasant, as these things go...

We have made this little Travelodge a home, somewhere we genuinely look forward to visiting. In and of itself, it's nothing special. Technically speaking, I ought to give it four stars because "Yay! I'm a fan!" is oh so true. But in the same way that I'm a fan of Confessions of a Shopaholic... that doesn't mean it's a stellar film. I love this place because of the tradition of the thing. But, again, in and of itself, it's nothing special. The staff are always friendly and welcoming, and it's conveniently located. There's no cafe-bar (why, when they say cafe-bar on trains, does it always sound like capybara? "There is a capybara on the train." Oh! If only, sweet announcer! If only!) and - where was I? Oh yes, there are the typical overpriced vending machines in the modest foyer but little provision besides that, but for us, part of the tradition is to go across the road to the Robin Hood for dinner anyway. They probably do a roaring trade in passing travellers over there. We also used to make a point of battling the Olympic Breakfasts in the next door Little Chef as well, but the breakfasts became gradually less Olympian until eventually the place shut. It had been replaced, last time I saw it, by a sad-looking Indian restaurant and cocktail bar, the building far too large for the two or three people I saw inside. But that's beside the point. Back to the Travelodge. I am very fond of this Travelodge, for such can indeed be so, O Doubting Ones, and while this is doubtless largely to do with happy associations, it's also got a lot to do with never having had an uncomfortable or unclean or unhelpful experience here. There's a reason we come back so much, after all.

I really wanted to give 5 stars if only for the venue. A few…read morethings: 1. We were promised in the help of the setup on the day, but the person was on holiday. The general manager arrived at about 3 pm, but we'd done by then. There was a young chap about who I had to seek for some assistance. I was introduced to the manager sometime later and this helped. 2. Upon arrival the details were incorrect in that it said pay on checkout, but the rooms had already been paid for, and a relative nearly got charged the wrong rate. 3. We had the "Garden Suite", which was just in the right place for accessing the marquee. 4. None of the TV's worked in either the main lounge (no signal), blamed on the weather. The other room, the TV socket on the back of the TV was broken, and, therefore, could not be plugged into the TV. 5. The water wouldn't run away in the shower fast enough, and nearly overflowed. Reported it to the manager, and took our key and would sort it out later. He returned the key and said all should be well. Next morning the same problem, and I reported it again on checking out. I was a bit surprised that there was only one key to the room, namely, ours 6. I don't think the pictures of the room really show things properly. They all needed more TLC. We told before booking that some rooms weren't available as they were having a refurb. I think that they should have started with the main ones they display. 7. The bar area out side of the marquee was looked after by a young lady who chatted and did a splendid job. 8. It was difficult to keep trying the find the barman sometimes in the evening. The manager came out to help during the party. I decided not have a tab, and it would have been difficult for them, and in the end, I decided that the contactless option was best. 9. I had to get a huge TV, on a stand, removed from the entrance to the ladies' toilet. 10. The heating of the marquee was just right. 11. The buffet was plenty for 50 people, although I did wonder at the beginning, but I needn't have worried, and some had to be cleared away. 12. At breakfast the person serving didn't know that our breakfast was included. She didn't always have an eye for detail, when the orange juice had run out. She walked by it several times. The inclusive breakfast includes the usual cereal, tea, toast, etc., and the cooked items was to choose four items from the list. I chose: Fried egg, bacon, sausage, and mushrooms, and I got: Two fried eggs, one rasher of bacon, one thin sausage, a few overcooked mushrooms. I did get an extra pot of tea. My children were in separate rooms, and I asked their breakfast to be added to my room, as they chose items were extra: Egg Royal (should be served on a muffin, but they were out of muffins) and smoked salmon and poached eggs. Others (three) wanted toast and four small pieces were present for them. There was no offer of preserves. In fact, at my earlier breakfast, I had to request marmalade. 13. At the end of the evening, the general manager allowed us (residents) to have a final drink at the bar. He kindly covered three other drinks ordered by my niece's partner. Hire of marquee: £350. Three rooms at: £95 per room Buffet: 50 x £15.50 Total: £1410 Would I book again? Perhaps not as the rooms need a lot more doing to them. Plus, I found some inexperienced staff, and lacking in numbers. See pics.

You get pre-meal drinks and nibbles in the main sitting room upstairs where there is a small bar, and then return to the ground floor to eat. A well thought out menu and a good choice for each of 3 courses for the set lunch. (apparently 4 courses for dinner). There is an Indian menu and specialities as well as International, but not visible on my visit. After an appetiser a slightly generous starter followed by a better judged main dish and a splendid pud. The wine list is well balance but some wines appear to be getting long in the tooth for my likeing. Well worth a visit. And a second visit recently was also excellent, with a very acceptable house wine. Worth a detour.
