awesome and fun place for curiosities, the owner has some brilliant Hollywood stories from the 90s and thousands

Had a bizzare experience in here recently. My husband likes to check out antique store, he looks for various collectibles he likes to get. For a long time he wanted to check out Lady Peter's Whimsy but surprise! The store is mostly closed, it was closed all the times we passed by for years! Check out their schedule LOL! Well, a couple of Sundays ago, it was opened so we stopped by. We were greeted by the British owner with "you are my first client", it was before 4 pm! The place is dark, crammed, can't really look around, everthing is hanging somewhere far away from you. Can't speak of prices, didn't see any! The owner turned on a few lights, but it still impossible to get near anything. Then she started to chat away too much, and I do enjoy some small talk, but I don't love to hear political opinions coming out of nowhere that I disagree with. I tried to keep it to myself hoping mu husband wants to go. But there was no need for that, the owner was ready to close the store and kick us out if "you're not buying anyhing". Well, that is not that simple if you can't see aything in there! I thought she was rude and I wonder why the Yelp rating is so high! With so many normal second stores around, who needs it? I love me some good thrifting and especially love places that are just a cacophony of interesting items and not just a stuffy antique store, but this one was a big disappointment in a lot of ways. The assortment of items is without question, vast and there are a ton of really unique and cool items but the owner (Victoria) really seemed to have no interest in selling about 95% of it. While she was chatty and nice, she also seemed to just be distrusting of us off the bat and began to police us for looking too long at certain items. Which, is kinda ridiculous given how packed that store is. There was so much to look at, there's not enough time in a day to see it all. It honestly seems like a fire hazard with how much stuff she has in there and there is no way it's up to code. I'm a packrat myself and this was EXTREME. Lots of items were layered atop each other, I'm sure some stuff hasn't seen daylight in ages. She's been at this spot for several years now, I saw another review saying the clutter was due to a hasty move, but that move was a while back... so... The few items she was open to selling were way above a reasonable price for the condition and quality they were in, even in terms of the area we were in. And I had a couple pieces (like a cool mermaid lamp or an old Simpsons toy sitting amount a mountain of used batteries) that she at first was open to selling then when I asked for the price she changed her mind. Out of all of us, only my friend ended up buying something. A few vinyls, some in their sleeves (damaged), some not, and she asked for $20 each. Nothing rare or exclusive, I could have got the same for $1 or $5 at any standard thrift store. To be honest, the store feels like it's just an excuse to feed a hoarding compulsion she may have. The high ratings for this store just baffle me. read more

Lady Peter's Whimsy carries 20th century merchandise. So, it's not necessarily antiques. The place held a glamorous kitchiness. Also, it was rather dusty. But there was plenty great stuff in this store. If you don't have the funds to decorate your place but would still like too... This is where you should go: again and again. Great for gifts too. Fun. Nostalgic.. And completely wild. read more

Lady Peter had moved premises since we last met 20 years ago. At that time on Magnolia the shop was highly organized with a lot of furniture as well as the tons of knick knacks. Back then, amongst other things, I bought a green pleather tikki bar and some martini glasses, those small ones they had in the 50's. Lady Peter was hurried into her new premises so it's a bit packed and you have to root around. There she was in all her glory, a unique and interesting fellow Brit sitting amongst the jewels holding court. I found two more martini glasses, thick with dust at the back of a cabinet. They have been waiting for me all this time. Now we have four. We had a lovely chat with Lady P and took some photos for old times sake. She manages everything herself so if she is on a call it is likely with a client so be patient or call back. read more

The only thing more magical than Lady Peter's Whimsy is the lady herself. You would be hard-pressed to find a more lovely, wonderful and kind human in this city. So far as the store itself, this is the type of colorful place where treasure lies in every layer of its jam packed confines. Set aside a good chunk of time when going there as it's hard to take it all in. If you are a fan of the Tiki aesthetic, there are so many vintage pieces that would suit your fancy. Go. Visit. IMHO best antique shop I've ever visited. It's like rummaging through your great grandpa/grandma's garage. You can get lost for hours. To me, this is what antique shopping is all about. The owner is an extension of her store. She is quirky and knows the value of her items. If you're into antique shops, instead of a Netflix binge, you might want to take a few hours to lose yourself in this vortex of hidden treasures. read more

As much as I want to give this place a 4-5 star review, I just don't feel I would be completely honest doing so. As everyone say's, the lady running the place is nice. She's absolutely hilarious at that, and a joy to talk to. I regularly shop at the Sherman Oaks Antique Mall, and she had mentioned to me that she used to have a booth or two there before she opened her own business. The place is a little dark, a little dusty, and a little cluttered, which is not a bad thing. You're at an antique place for crying-out-loud. However, maybe it's just the fact that I might prefer a booth set up like the Sherman Oaks Antique Mall, but I felt weird rummaging through things and trying to squeeze through like a maze; slightly uncomfortable, but that's just me. I might return in the future hoping to raise my review to a 4-5 star review, but for now my heart and my words of truth stick with 3 stars for now. read more

A bit cluttered, a bit dusty, and really cozy! These are the kinds of hole-in-the-wall places that you find honest to god practical antiques or vintage bits. For example; I found a pile of scripts from the 70s that never made it to production. I found a scrapbook from a housewife around 1954 filled with things she wanted for her family. I found an old 50s hand-held home radiation tester, and it works! What other "vintage" or "antique" places have that kind of junk? I love this spot, and the owner is a British woman who grew up in a castle and her enormous Great Dane is sometimes in the shop. Also, everything is negotiable and no asking price is too low! If you keep asking, you'll get away with something good at a nice price. Go ahead, ask her about her old Patina Jaguar. You'll get a few stories for sure! read more

Victoria, who owns this shop, is a riot. She made me a fantastic deal on this lamp that would have cost me three times as much on La Brea, and some other knick knacks I'd fallen in love with. The shop is definitely an antique shop, with all sorts of quirky items, from phrenology heads to velvet paintings. It is supremely dusty, but that is the way an antique shop should be. read more

I wanted to love this place but it didn't quite live up to expectations. I've certainly never seen a giant shark's head or a 10 foot tall stuffed giraffe for sale before but I don't know those were quite the cool accent pieces I was going for. Browsed through the store for a while but found it to be, quite honestly, quite overpriced. Better luck for similar-type items at the Santa Monica Flea Market . Also, I'm fine with poking around in dusty corners but the store could do with some thematic organization. Ie. - all you decorative plates congregate in this corner. Things that go on people's heads go in that pile over there. Oh well, Lady Peter - I guess I'll have to find some other gal pal. read more

Was in there today and was blown away by how nice the British lady running the place is .... Lots too look at and find... I'll be coming back here from time to time. There is also this really sweet great dane puppy lounging around and he is a sweet huge dog with big puffy feet. read more

We adore this store!!! Wall to wall - floor to ceiling goodies, trinkets & knick-knacks! I promise you will find the owner, Virginia, such a delight to talk to! She made us a good deal on a 1940's dresser! There's so much in the store to look at! Hit up the back corner for tiki culture doo-dads. I visited the store today and found it to be really charming! And full of hidden retro and antique gems! There is a great variety of vintage items for all. I came for Tiki Things... so much to see. I met Virginia , a lady with a big personality, charming, sweet and humble with a English accent... I saw her car which was an older mini Wagon and she lives in apartment . I'm not sure why someone thought She owned a jaguar and lived In a castle! Lol People can be so full of it ! Anyway if you love finding cool vintage things this is the place to come! read more

This is what a good antique store should be: a tiny space crammed with goodies up to the ceiling, dusty, and run by a slightly eccentric English woman with fabulous taste. The owner (who I thought was named Virginia, but I see other reviewers below say it is Victoria), was friendly and helpful, and I got the feeling if I brought her a bottle of wine we could sit around and talk about Art Deco lamps or 1950s day dresses or Tiki-themed furnishings for a couple of hours. Her prices might seem high to some, but I found them to be very reasonable, based on the condition, quality and age of her pieces. Plus, she is willing to negotiate on certain things and will be upfront if she absolutely cannot. I left with five vintage mannequin heads and an armful of delightfully tacky fabric...and happy as can be. read more

DON'T BOTHER GOING HERE!! The owner was very rude to me when I asked her a question about the price of an item. She spoke to me like I was a child and cut me off mid sentence. I never write reviews, even if I've had a poor experience somewhere but it was sooo bad here that I needed to say something. Not only was she very rude but her store is a complete MESS. You have to climb over things and everything is completely disorganized. There are many much better antiques stores in Burbank with better merchandise and kinder owners. I had such high hopes for this place, it looks so cool from the photos and reviews...but one thing everyone failed to mention is that the whole place smells like cigarette smoke. I mean no disrespect to Victoria, she was wonderful and helpful for finding things in the jumble of 'junk,' but I decided not to buy a lovely set of suitcases because the fabric had absorbed that smoke smell. "Lady Peter" (aka Victoria, as I've learned from the other reviewers) is the kind of shop owner you hope for when you go to a vintage store like hers! She's extremely friendly and has the most charming English accent to boot. You'll find everything from mid-century modern lamps (I found two that I HAD to have, much to my fiance's dismay...But I got an amazing deal, and an even more amazing spiced up living room!) to Hawaiiana collectibles to '40s-era wind-up robot toys. If you have OCD, I hope you get over it, because though this place might seem to be a clutter to some, it's a treasure chest of wonderfulness. If you want to set your home apart and avoid having your living room look like an Ikea showroom, this is the place to hit. I was so mislead by the yelp reviews! This place looks awesome from the outside, but it's so crammed and disorganized and badly lighted that it's impossible to actually shop there. Random light fixtures for $150+... plastic cups in glass cases... weird... Don't bring a big purse because you'll accidentally knock something over. The owner was funny... she seems to have good taste... She'd do a lot better if she set up the store the way she set up her outside display windows. Very disappointing! read more

When I moved to Los Angeles, the first piece of furniture I ever purchased was here. It was an avant garde strangely shaped dresser. This dresser needed a new coat of paint, but it was such a unique item-I'll definitely never find another. I'm pretty sure it was originally found on the set of Pee Wee's Playhouse-it had a piece of paper taped to the bottom saying it came from the studios anyway. Lady Peter's Whimsy always has really unique antiques-I don't know where she finds all of this unsual stuff. If you are a treasure hunter, I highly recommend. I also love the store owner Virginia-she's a riot! If you've ever seen the show Absolutely Fabulous, she's Edina. Hilarious, slightly offensive, very British and if you stay more than 5 minutes you will probably hear the words "bloody hell" at least once or twice (unless there's a child around). You won't regret visiting! I go at least once a month just to see what new items she's dug up. read more

Such a neat and whimsical vintage shop! The owner and I talked for a good half an hour- she is such a delightful and interesting woman! I came into the store not looking for anything in particular and ended up walking out with a gorgeous small pot perfect for my succulent garden! There's absolutely something for everyone here! And as for everyone complaining that it's a bit crowded- that's the fun of it! It's like being a kid again with an i-spy book looking for small treasures. Loved this store!! I ended up talking to the owner for an hour. She is great. I felt instantly comfortable with her. This store has THE MOST UNIQUE, COOL, KITCHY stuff I've ever seen. I have never seen a cooler collection of lamps....honestly!!!!! I found the prices a bit expensive on the tag but if you make her an offer she'll do the best she can and try to give it to you for a steal! She is honest and very likeable. I called her on a day when she is not even suppose to be open and she stayed until 6:30pm to meet me at the store and stayed with me there until 8:30PM. I ended up buying 2 velvet nude sixties paintings, an awesome 6x9 green shag rug, and an old fashioned mid century telephone for a great price. She is someone I connected with right away. She even referred me to other stores to clean the rug, buy lampshades, etc. She was the most helpful. If you like one of a kind pieces from any era 30's,4-'s,50's,60's, & 70's ..come here to find things I swear are conversation pieces you will NEVER find anywhere else. read more
