I rode a bike from the north side of Portsmouth on a mission to find the pub and have a tall pint. Compared to the US, I was surprised at how easy it was to ride a bike to the pub. Once getting there I immediately understood what the British Officer was describing to me. He told me that as Admiral Nelson's fleet was leaving Portsmouth, townspeople were waving to them from the pub. Now that is history. In addition, you can see a picture where a British Royal Navy ship inadvertently ran aground and hit the pub. So I had a pint of local ale and it hit the spot. I also ordered some chips that were wrapped in paper. They were hot, salty, and tasty. They soaked that beer right up and I was ready for the bike ride back. The view is fantastic. Several ferry boats came by and the sun was setting. I was soaking up the history of it all. the bathrooms were clean, wait staff friendly, and I would recommend visiting here at least once if visiting Portsmouth.
